I was told variously that I was neurotic; that dd was just thick; that she was bullied because people were jealous because she was pretty; that it was just a phase; lots of rubbish from schools and services. We got referred to CAMHS and saw a support worker who really wasn’t any good; then a SALT who did acknowledge processing difficulties; then private. She’s been really badly failed by schools and services.

Good grief, that's awful @WouldBeGood
She has been very badly let down by schools and medical professionals
I think I'd feel like punching someone if that was my childConfused
I'm so sorry you've both gone through thisThanks

WouldBeGood · 31/07/2021 15:55

Thanks @latissimusdorsi. 💕

That's grim Wouldbe. I had (and I enjoyed a great parental relationship with DDs' school) conversations like "be mum not an English teacher" , "be their supporter not a marker" because I could see there were glaring dyslexia markers. The kind that I would flag up as a concern and refer to my Support for Learning and Pupil Support colleagues to look in a pupil's work with a view to screening. Turns out I was right and DD1's dyslexia was severe enough for her to be entitled to Disabled Students Allowance. I think DD3 will be similar but since her first year at uni was almost entirely online and she ended up back here from January, her second year will be interesting. I hope your DD is happy in her workplace as it sounds like education let her down.

riverrunning · 31/07/2021 20:03

Colour me absolutely unsurprised wouldbegood if they're not any trouble at school, at best you get some words shoved into a word document without any action.

I had years of severe and awful anxiety related behaviours from both of my dds at home about school, and the school kept telling me they were fine at school despite all of this and treating me as though I was a deranged nuisance.

My advice is self refer them via the GP if the school isn't helpful - the professionals in the nhs we've seen have mostly been excellent.

riverrunning · 31/07/2021 20:08

Ah wouldbegood sorry I've not paid proper attention - shame she had to go private, there are so many private diagnosis places because it takes so long.

grovee you can't beat new pans, what did you go for? I'm in the market for some soon.

lidlfix sorry to hear about the late dyslexia diagnoses for the dds.

YeDancer · 01/08/2021 09:04

Seeing as I was meant to be in bloody Greece this week and still have a week off work, need ideas please for day trips with teen daughter that isn't like sooooo boring etc.
Would obviously rather be somewhere with 35 degree heat
Bloody 'rona

Lockdownbear · 01/08/2021 09:12

Lidfix that's crazy. I've never heard if Disabled Students Allowance.

I'm dyslexic, my DMum first twigged it when I was about 7 or 8. Primary School did nothing. Secondary give me a few worksheets which I was embarrassed about. I was formally diagnosed when I was about 30.

DS1 has something going on I'm just not sure what. ADHD was ruled out when he was about 4. He was referred at CHAMs Winter 2019, and saw speech therapist the same summer. Speech therapist said ASD. But I'm no further forward to a formal diagnosis around spring CHAMs said it would be at least another year.
Meanwhile DS doesn't want to stand out from the crowd.

It’s not Greece but some of these suggestions might suit @YeDancer
tbh at that age I’d take a friend along too
they have more fun than doing stuff on own or with the old rentsGrin

WouldBeGood · 01/08/2021 10:20

Costco for pans @Lidlfix - DP has them and they are great, and so easy to clean. I have pan envy, but have an extensive collection of pans from over the years, all of which are in good nick, so can’t justify new ones.

@YeDancer apparently the Koko pancake house just off Byres Road is a preferred hangout of teenage girls 😃

Really hard to think of things to do with dcs that age. Oh, for Greece! Or anywhere, really

She's not really outdoorsy or sporty and doesn't like heights so theme parks are a no-goer it seems.

Looks like it will be milport again!

shouldistop · 01/08/2021 10:56

I'm taking my boys to Millport next week too Grin

ElephantOfRisk · 01/08/2021 11:02

I recently bought a nice pan from Waitrose, even has one of those lids with drain holes - it's excellent. I have the Costco fry pans which are good too.

WouldBeGood · 01/08/2021 12:22

What happens at Millport?

OP posts:
Groovee · 01/08/2021 12:38

I got Russell Hobbs marble ones. I had some of the pans for the last 4 years and bought the rest.

Had a stainless steel set from Costco for the last 16 years but they are heavy and with my fibro a bit dangerous at times. The new ones are light.

@YeDancer what about fruit picking or seeing if the cocoa bean place Dumfries way has space.

ElephantOfRisk · 01/08/2021 12:44

@YeDancer, zoo, safari park, cinema?
Are the escape rooms open?
Shopping (to a budget) and a cafe?
tidying Decorating her bedroom?

YeDancer · 01/08/2021 12:48

We might do a shopping trip.
Sadly she says she's too old for the chocolate factory as I had suggested that and also roller stop disco.
Bloody typical teen not wanting to do anything.

shouldistop · 01/08/2021 12:52

@WouldBeGood the sun always shines Grin

@WouldBeGood can you book this place to sit in or is it takeaway, do you know? I'm also entertaining the pre teens / teens this week and it is hard work! I (sometimes) long for the days when going to a park was all it took for high excitement.

WouldBeGood · 01/08/2021 15:35

Both sit in and take out @PoloMintPatty. I’ve been informed of it’s desirability by young folks 😃

I think an inclusive Scotsnet outing would be good- I’d llove to chat with everyone and see if you look like what I think 😂
