My neighbour texted me yesterday to drop off some shopping because their kids have tested positive and this evening her husband is in the shops.
Did all of Edinburgh get the monsoon rain? Or just a band straight through the middle?

rookiemere · 04/07/2021 21:45

Just checked the Edinburgh covid rates on travelling tabby, they're pretty alarming. Now getting a bit spooked about going anywhere in case we get the text of doom.

LarryVeest · 04/07/2021 22:00

I voted "yes" in the last referendum. I was probably quite an evangelical bore about it. This shitstorm has completely changed my view. I honestly thought independence would give an opportunity to do things better, but it's been a real eye opener to see the blatant political contrariness of the SG at a time when I would have expected us all to pull together. Like in WW2 when they had a government of national unity. I fucking hate Johnson, but I hate being patronised by SG even more.

charliebrown59 · 04/07/2021 22:12

Both the political game playing and the covid rates are terrible. So we are again facing longer restrictions, more posturing etc etc.

dancemom · 05/07/2021 08:20

Are we vaccinating 16 & 17 year olds now? I thought it was only 18+ but I just saw a post on Facebook advertising for 16 & 17 year olds second jabs?

If they're saying that they're keeping masks after 9th August, that'll be the kids going back into school on 12th Aug in masks. Hmm

I think clinically vulnerable 16/17 yr olds were getting jags. Could it be that? I would hope they would all have had 2nd jag some time ago so maybe just a reminder for anyone missed?

dancemom · 05/07/2021 09:08

@latissimusdorsi that makes sense thanks

"If they're saying that they're keeping masks after 9th August, that'll be the kids going back into school on 12th Aug in masks. "

Yeah, I feel so bad for them all! DD has quite bad mask acne which is just beginning to clear up. Ugh... It's so shite.

ssd · 05/07/2021 09:26

Im quite worried about masks disappearing. I totally understand people hating them and wishing them gone. But working in a shop where people are right in your face i feel they give me a tiny bit more protection than nothing at all. But as ski said earlier, maybe if it isn't the ffp3 mask its not much use anyway.
Im just nervous about masks and social distancing being dropped when i feel those things have prevented me getting it all this time. I know i can still wear a mask but is it pointless when most others don't?

ssd · 05/07/2021 09:27

I feel that we're opening up when ive never known so many people have covid. The numbers are hellish here.

TheGenealogist · 05/07/2021 09:28

Clinically vulnerable 16 and 17 year olds were done with the first wave of clinically vulnerable over 50s. DD's friend was 16 in January and a type 1 diabetic, she was done in about March.

ssd · 05/07/2021 09:35

16 and 17 yr old unpaid carer's can sign up

rookiemere · 05/07/2021 09:37

@ssd I'm not going anywhere where I need to leave my details now until after my holidays. Our local pub is closed due to a case so it all seems very close to home.

ssd · 05/07/2021 09:39

We've not been anywhere like pubs since dh got covid after one pub visit last year. And the test and trace thing sounds a right pain.

ssd · 05/07/2021 09:40

Thats a lie, weve sat outside a few times but dont want to go in and sit. I feel i get enough of being indoors with people in my job.

ssd · 05/07/2021 09:41

I dont get how pubs need to close but shops dont...

Scottishskifun · 05/07/2021 10:04

@ssd

I dont get how pubs need to close but shops dont...
Generally it's staffing levels if pubs have had majority of staff working with people who were positive then they will be a close contact. Quite a few smaller shops by us have closed for this reason same as some takeaways.

@rookiemere test and trace is so swamped at the moment that although they may ask for details somewhere it's not being followed up by anyone so as long as you don't have the pinger on you won't be contacted. Although if you go places might want to sit outside as the rates are a bit bonkers at the moment!

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 05/07/2021 10:17

"I fucking hate Johnson, but I hate being patronised by SG even more."

This puts into words beautifully the thing I hate most about the SG's approach to this. I disagree with a lot of their COVID aims and think the 'elimination' strategy was ridiculous (and has now caused us to top the European charts in terms of cases - go us!), but it's the patronising attitude that really gets me. Constantly saying she wants to have a 'grown up conversation', which in itself sounds like something you'd say to a teenager, while providing no data to explain/justify your decisions and imposing draconian rules on everyone. In a conversation you usually get the chance to talk back. The Scot gov adverts look like they're aimed at a young child, and we're constantly being told our extra measures are to 'keep us safe' because obviously we can't be trusted to use common sense for ourselves. I'm a grown woman who has somehow managed to navigate life to this point without being micromanaged by the Scottish government, so stop talking down to me like I'm a naughty child!

rookiemere · 05/07/2021 10:20

@Scottishskifun that's reassuring I guess.

On the sitting outside thing, I'm not completely convinced it makes a difference from a contact tracing perspective, so then you have the double whammy of having inconvenienced yourself by being outside ( fine in nice weather rubbish in the rain) and still having to self isolate despite doing the "right " thing.

@ssd yes the shopping thing is weird I've thought that myself. I guess it's because most people are in and out within 15 minutes whereas in a restaurant there's a longer contact period.

Got the weekly email of gloom from well known Edinburgh restaurateur. Yes we all know it's an impossible situation for them, but railing at your customer base seems like a somewhat counter productive way to go about it. I haven't stopped them as I read for sheer comedic value.but I'm unlikely to frequent their restaurants any more as a result.Maybe she needs to join this thread,

ResilienceWanker · 05/07/2021 10:35

Yes, this seems to be the case. Apparently they aren't even contacting all positive people in person, but sending texts instead, telling them to read about isolation on the internet. Hmm I got a text giving me a (broken) link to "add my contacts if asked" which seems very wooly, as I haven't been asked because I haven't been called. They seem most interested in "high risk settings" which they say are health settings, care homes, places like prisons, food processing, and "pubs that don't serve food" (but only if you're staff!) Oh, and international travel and airports. If you report you've been anywhere else, it is "allowed" to be other hospitality/ accommodation/ education setting/ workplace/ parties etc - but not shops, gyms, leisure places like cinemas, museums or so on, or other travel hubs, which all seems a bit odd. Needless to say I haven't filled in anything (as I haven't been asked to) but will do what I can if I am asked.

They also gave me a code to put into protect scotland, so it will ping anyone within 2m of my phone (but not necessarily within 2m of me! Doesn't seem to acknowledge that women don't tend to keep their phone physically on them all the time as WE DON'T HAVE SENSIBLE POCKETS) who has that kind of thing enabled.

Not entirely convinced this is test and protect being it's most efficient, to be honest!

ssd · 05/07/2021 10:36

Post the email on here rookie ,whats being said?

ssd · 05/07/2021 10:37

Dh wasn't contacted when he had it either

latissimusdorsi · 05/07/2021 10:53

Those newspaper headlines! What an embarrassment 🙈
Can't see many people wanting to come here on their holidays
How has a country with our population size and only 2 large cities been able to become the Covid capital of Europe Angry

Grellbunt · 05/07/2021 10:55

What headlines?
