Hear, hear @Bytheloch

Grellbunt · 02/07/2021 13:09

Yeah, I thought SG would ease up after the election but they are STILL obsessing about cases

So many meaningless rules still in place, but football etc allowed to run riot

Says it all

@ClosedAuraOpenMind

Think today's briefing was scheduled earlier in the week, so wouldn't read too much into it. If she announces something major - like a further delay in easing restrictions- then the opposition will really have a go at her for not doing it in Holyrood. think the Presiding Officer has also made clear she expects major announcements to be to parliament
Sorry to hear about your DD closedaura. What a pain! Hope you all stay well. I have to say I am glad that the PO has been putting her foot down a bit on announcements being made to Parliament rather than on the podium. Nothing is moving so quickly at the moment that they have to act immediately, on a non sitting day, and being able to question the FM on such announcements is pretty central to the point of holyrood! The bizarre Manchester travel thing not being laid out to Parliament was astonishing.
WouldBeGood · 02/07/2021 15:11

In a way I’m pleased they did the Manchester travel thing. Not for the poor people affected, but it did enable people outwith Scotland as well as in it to see how mental she is. And to see someone actually calling her out on it was refreshing.

Bytheloch · 02/07/2021 17:17

Absolutely this @WouldBeGood total overreach, which got Scotland the wrong kind of attention. Like Humza today, declaring he’s been on a ‘4 nations call’. Great egos think alike.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 02/07/2021 20:00

Thought it was interesting that NS said today the hospital treatment rate (don't want to say hospitalisation as that would imply admittance) is now 3% as of the data they had in early June.

It must be lower than that now you'd think. Technically it must lower every week as more people get the protection of the second vaccine.

titsintiers · 02/07/2021 21:02

3% of what @SoMuchForSummerLove? Had a few wines, so slightly mentally impaired now 🤪

SoMuchForSummerLove · 02/07/2021 21:45

3% of people who test positive need hospital attention. Was 13% in January I think she said, 3% by June.

Yes, I read the script of the update earlier and you're right @SoMuchForSummerLove. Good news!
titsintiers · 03/07/2021 06:45

Thanks for clarifying @SoMuchForSummerLove, that makes sense now.

Just read the news about face masks being needed beyond the 9th August. How tedious

latissimusdorsi · 04/07/2021 15:56

Thanks @dancemom

Hospital numbers up 120 in a week, disproportionately high compared rUK
Would really really like to know if all these people are in for treatment for Covid, which is quite worrying. Or are we miscounting?

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 04/07/2021 17:24

Scotland's general health has always been poorer compared to rUK and this is known to be important in how people fare with COVID, so I guess it's plausible that a disproportionate number of people are seriously affected up here. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a statistical quirk though.

TheGenealogist · 04/07/2021 17:39

Tedious is putting it mildly. It's a fucking joke. Yet another political willy-waving stunt to prove she's different from Boris.

The message from England : we are allowing people to take responsibility and make their own decisions.

The message from Scotland : you are all too stupid to take responsibility, and need Queen Nicola to do that for you. Know your place.

It's a fucking insult.

WouldBeGood · 04/07/2021 17:46

@TheGenealogist yes. I’m quite angry. I’m not a naughty wean.

ResilienceWanker · 04/07/2021 17:58

Yes - the timing of that is suspicious, given England's messaging that it's likely to be personal responsibility from the 19th. Our messaging : "och, now don't youse lot think yer havin any o that". it's not new info - it was suggested at the announcement of the various new dates - but to reiterate it now just seems a bit pointed. Not only is our date almost a month later, but it's not even a complete relaxation of restrictions. Because the restrictions are working so well.

I'd have thought that if all masks were dropped on the 9th, in practice many shops would request people carried on wearing them, and many would for a bit, until they were in a situation they felt "safer". Though they couldn't be enforced, they are hardly enforced at present. But with restrictions still in place there will still be the same mixture of people wearing/not wearing them, but with people who dislike them but not wanting hassle avoiding going to unnecessary places where they are needed. Like now. Confused So it's not really any change from present in terms of opening up society. Maybe it's a new VisitScotland campaign. "Come to Scotland if you miss the mid 2021 pandemic experience".

TheGenealogist · 04/07/2021 18:16

And if you're an English family weighing up whether to spend your summer holidays mask-free at English attractions, or masked in Scotland, what would you choose?

Scottishskifun · 04/07/2021 18:18

I see both sides and have been on the receiving end of some real nastiness.
I now struggle to wear one with long covid it sends my breathlessness through the roof! The amount of people tutting, staring or in a few cases having a go is disgusting!

So much so I've had to get a sunflower lanyard.
They do help reduce the distance particles spread but at the same time with the new variants being lower viral load and more airborne unless wearing a FFP3 then your not protected at all and air build up of virus still occurs!

I hate the messenging though of no trust but also it then seems to make people feel like they have the right to have a go at people like me who simply can't wear them and I always did prior to catching covid.

I often look at Wales as I think there's lot of historical similarities in the populations
They had 44 hospital cases on Friday, we had 285Confused

Sorry to hear you're still experiencing this Sad. That's obviously totally out of order. Bet they wouldn't speak up to the stag parties on our trains last week, all coincidentally "exempt" from wearing a mask (for the reason of having to be loud, shouty and slightly drunk, presumably). But a woman with a lanyard - yup, you're fair game AngryAngry

I see standard fabric/surgical masks as basically a big tissue permanently attached to you. So if you sneeze/cough at short notice it should stop the majority of the "spray" (yuk Envy) - but I'm not sure it does much more than that. Given it steams up my glasses even being properly adjusted and whatnot, I'm not convinced it's doing much to stop incoming or outgoing tiny water droplets, and hence virus particles.

I think a more relaxed approach would be better - no-ones preventing anyone from wearing one, but there is less potential for "righteous" tutting. There may well be some social pressure to continue for a bit, but there wouldn't be the "it's the law you know" flag to wave at anyone "not complying". There is of course the fact that vulnerable people may feel more vulnerable if there is an immediate loss of social distancing AND masks (I'd prefer to keep SD tbh). But "better" masks are of course available for those that can wear them if people are desperate to stop themselves from catching it in a less masky society.

runningpink · 04/07/2021 20:27

I can’t even get angry anymore, just feel totally deflated.

Perihelion · 04/07/2021 21:11

Having just seen my neighbour coming out of the local shop, I'm totally up for keeping masks at the moment. My neghbou
