@Grellbunt

What headlines?
Scotland is the covid capital of Europe with 6/10 highest covid cases in Europe regions being in Scotland
ssd · 05/07/2021 11:08

Why is it so bad here? Is it the stupid rollout of the vaccine?

latissimusdorsi · 05/07/2021 11:12

It can't be the vaccine rollout because we've got more vaccinated than loads european countries 🤷🏼‍♀️

Scottishskifun · 05/07/2021 11:19

Lower immunity level to start with from less people getting it, delta variant (not yet dominant in other parts of Europe), less double vaccinated than England as we started with care homes only first where as England did care homes and people over a certain age at the same time.

Public attitude and harsh lockdowns mean people party, gather in bigger groups, get blind drunk etc whereas most of Europe people have been able to see family throughout just in low numbers so less of the release and go wild mentality. Not really peoples fault more a result of harsh lockdowns!

rookiemere · 05/07/2021 11:24

I don't want to shame the restaurant owner @ssd so I've deliberately not mentioned the name. I mean it all makes sense, it's just that your customers is not an appropriate audience, plus there's a bit of lack of recognition that it's not just the hospitality industry that's been impacted by this and it is a genuine health concern.

That's interesting on the contact tracing @ResilienceWanker , maybe I shouldn't be so worried about going out.

Grellbunt · 05/07/2021 11:25

Aha

Yes. Should have opened up last summer.

So does that mean that having had it does give some natural immunity? They've always been cagey on that. But it would be nature's way.

Grellbunt · 05/07/2021 11:28

So people in their forties are not to get boosters? So unhealthy enough that the risk from Covid is higher than from AZ but healthy enough not to need a booster....

Scottishskifun · 05/07/2021 11:41

Yes it does most people have detectable antibodies for up to 8 months. Past this it becomes T cell memory so greater chance of your body kicking it out before catching it. But also with the vaccination programme studies have shown that if you have had covid within 6 months of your first vaccine then 2 weeks after your first dose you have greater antibody protection then someone who is double dosed.

So with more people in England contracting it when they received their first jab they were the equivalent of double dosed a lot sooner.

Grellbunt · 05/07/2021 11:49

Makes sense

In Germany and France recovered people only get one vaccine in total!

ResilienceWanker · 05/07/2021 11:55

I think I agree! Your risk of being in contact with covid is probably quite high - but if you're not too worried about that (and as you're double jagged and you likely had it anyway earlier, that seems fair!) your risk of anyone actually contacting you about it is probably as low as it has been!

I have no idea where I caught it from (in a "it could have been anywhere" way - not a "I've hermetically sealed myself in the house so someone must have blown it through the chimney" way). Assuming it was (shortly) before we went away, I did go to a couple of cafes/restaurants (inside and outside) and loads of public transport - so probably something like that. But I've been pretty good (or stupid? ) about giving details, wearing masks when requested, sanitising and whatnot (and I have the Protect Scotland App of Doom Blush) and I haven't had any alerts from anywhere. Which to be honest, I'd be surprised by if things were working as they should. Frankly, contact tracing seems pointless when case numbers are so high - but given so much is (or could be) automated, I'd have expected to be pinged somehow before now - especially when cases ARE so high. (I'd already decided if pinged by the app I wouldn't isolate, but would lft... So I'm probably a large part of the problem!)

ResilienceWanker · 05/07/2021 12:00

Ah, that makes sense ski! So not only do more people in England have antibodies, but the level of antibodies is likely to be higher in those people (on average). Which is presumably why delta isn't taking off as much there as here even though our vaccine programmes are theoretically at the same point.

latissimusdorsi · 05/07/2021 12:14

It makes sense. But the bit that doesn't make sense is the 4 uk nations were all following the same science and we have ended up in the worst situation! Look at the numbers in Wales compared to hereConfused

ResilienceWanker · 05/07/2021 12:19

Yes, but Wales also had a huuuuuge spike in infections late last year - they had their own various local lockdowns/ national lockdown separate from England to try to control it. And they went in really quick on the vaccines. So if the thing about previous infection boosting the single jab efficiency is true, you'd expect Wales to be doing pretty well now. I admit I am surprised by the difference between us all though!

Scottishskifun · 05/07/2021 12:38

Wales had big spikes just before Christmas and with a fast vaccination programme means they are also doubled dosed sooner.

If you look at cases now per 100,00 they are highest in the North of Wales which many parts managed to remain low where as the highest infection rates were in the South before Christmas and its the most populated area and now isn't too high.

Ceredigion is the exception which has always managed to keep infection levels pretty low but they never stopped track and trace programs and it's a very spread out rural region with smaller towns.

latissimusdorsi · 05/07/2021 13:38

Ok thanks. I guess we never had those big spikes last autumn cos Glasgow was kept in lockdown for months and they wouldn't open Edinburgh up properly even when cases were very low.
So we're in worse position to Wales nowHmm

Getting there

TheGenealogist · 05/07/2021 17:06

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-57712737

Scotland has the worst rates of Covid in the whole of Europe. Queen Nicola, Patron Saint of Covid, keeping us all SAFE.

Isn't she doing an amazing job? Hmm

Scottishskifun · 05/07/2021 17:28

I think it just goes to show that you can't control a virus with a elimination strategy if it mutates fast!

NS was definitely winning last year but this year its a fall from grace and many going what's the point anymore since the most vulnerable are vaccinated.

Christ I even have points like that and I have long bloody covid!

latissimusdorsi · 05/07/2021 17:48

Well think that's the only time I've ever agreed with BJ
"If we can't open up for the summer, take advantage of better weather and school holidays then when can we?"

So Scotland aiming for last week of school holidays and just few weeks before autumn. And that's unlikely to happen now since WHO announced we have highest cases in Europe Angry

Scottishskifun · 05/07/2021 17:57

@latissimusdorsi I think a lot of people in Scotland gave up listening to the "rules" quite a while ago! In fact none of my friends even knows what they are anymore so with the exception of isolating or wearing a mask!

Safe to say majority of Scots have covid restrictions fatigue! Not a suprise really and is a fault of SG mixed messages, stricter restrictions and travel bans!

latissimusdorsi · 05/07/2021 18:12

Oh I agree about the socialising rules. I'm not paying attention anymore particularly since everything I followed has left us with highest rates in Europe 🤷🏼‍♀️
but those of us with kids in education are stuck with rules we can't influence
And DH does a sport where competitions are still hampered by the restrictions

I agree.

I honestly couldn't tell you the current rules, other than isolating and masks.

TheGenealogist · 05/07/2021 18:26

We drove down the M74 and into England at the weekend. Passed several notices - you're entering Covid Zone 1. You are in Covid Zone 2.

No clue. And like others, don't care.
