4 in 10? Where did you read that @Helensburghmiddleagedmum ?

Scottishskifun · 29/06/2021 10:30

@Gingerkittykat buy some FFP3 masks for your medical appointments. They are more expensive but a recent trial in hospital settings showed they offered 100% protection to health care workers.

@Helensburghmiddleagedmum Longcovid does indeed suck I'm one of the unlucky ones but it is very random I'm more pissed off at the SG refusal time and time again to set up long covid clinics despite numerous questions in Parliament.
It's not a nice illness if you get a moderate case and definitely worse than a cold for some (myself included)

I saw graphs on GMTV, Pfizer is much more effective 9 out of 10 people will not catch Covid after 2 doses. I couldn't find the graphs online, did find this .... www.thesun.co.uk/news/15051818/how-effective-covid-jab-variants-kent-indian-south-africa/
WouldBeGood · 29/06/2021 12:19

Both vaccines are highly effective at preventing you catching Covid and making it a tiny risk of hospitalisation or death.

Obviously some people will get it, and the media is full on hammering that and seeking them out. But it doesn’t matter, any more than flu does

dancemom · 29/06/2021 14:13

• 3,118 new cases of COVID-19 reported*
• 27,875 new tests for COVID-19 that reported results
◦ 11.6% of these were positive
• 1 new reported death(s) of people who have tested positive
• 20 people were in intensive care yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19
• 215 people were in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19
• 3,781,887 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 2,701,195 have received their second dose

Well glad to read they aren't putting more restrictions in despite a bit of scare mongering this morning with the headlines!

The numbers are crazy hopefully they will start dropping again now Scotland is out of the euros and schools are out!

Vaccines are a weird one but I think that's why they are looking at mix and match so a booster Pfizer may help boost the AZ people but it's obviously variant dependent.

The Pfizer and moderna are mrna based though so gives bodies own immune system ability to adapt which is probably why they work better on new variants to date.

Haudyourwheesht · 29/06/2021 17:10

@Helensburghmiddleagedmum

I think Covid is starting to run rife again now, not just football related, lots of people mixing, families, friends, people going out to restaurants and cafe's, meeting each other in houses and gardens, shopping more. People possibly feeling less anxious about Covid because they have been double vaccinated. Initially I think a lot of us were under the impression that being double vaccinated meant we wouldn't get Covid. It is clear now that if you have had the AZ vaccine, even a double dose, you have a 4 in 10 chance of getting Covid, though you won't be hopefully seriously ill. From the people I have heard of who have had 2 doses of the AZ vaccine and still got Covid it is a nasty illness, much worse than a cold, even with the two doses. Obviously government opinion now is that we have to get on with it, people will get Covid, but things are opening up, schools are back, people are back in the office, travelling, attending sporting events, and so on and so forth.
It's not a "nasty illness" for a lot of people though. Yes it can be very serious for some, it can lead to significant long term consequences for others, but the majority of people I know who have had it have had it very mildly.

If the extremely over-cautious Scottish government are not stressing over cases, and the pretty rare cases of vaccinated people getting covid, I certainly won't be doing so.

WouldBeGood · 29/06/2021 19:57

Good way to look at it @Haudyourwheesht

Gingerkittykat · 30/06/2021 04:30

There was a Facebook post from NHS Fife that said several positive cases were linked to a nightclub on 18 June. I'm sure that loads of the positives will be similar.

I'm definitely going to book myself the log cabin, it's not even that far from home I'm just desperate for a change of scene!

charliebrown59 · 30/06/2021 06:14

80 percent of cases in under 44s - that shows you that the vaccines are a big success.

WouldBeGood · 30/06/2021 07:03

Go for it @Gingerkittykat. I’m sure it will do you the world of good to get a change of scenery.

Grellbunt · 30/06/2021 09:55

@Y0uCann0tBeSer10us

A week ago I was mildly shocked by the figures (although not really worried as cases don't matter that much any more). Now I just kind of shrug and am mildly curious about how high they'll get. I don't know what is going on with the vaccines though, I haven't heard any complaints about supply and wonder if take up is the problem in younger age groups? The centre near us has been very quiet for the last week or so. Or the ridiculous letter system which they -eventually seem to be conceding is wholly inappropriate for this cohort?
Well maybe they could give some of the no show slots to over 40s who'd rather have Pfizer than AZ and who are thus still waiting for a jab. Patients in England get a choice and it is a disgrace that they are still withholding AZ to over 40s here despite the known safety risks.
Haudyourwheesht · 30/06/2021 10:01

The 'known' safety risks are a tiny, tiny risk factor, so maybe they'd rather not pander to social media scaremongering nonsense. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Grellbunt · 30/06/2021 10:07

1 in 10,000 isn't that low.

Why is the UK, and especially Scotland, still using a jab in the 40-55 age group that has been withdrawn or made optional for that age group in most other countries?

Haudyourwheesht · 30/06/2021 10:15

So wait. But stop whinging about it. The reason the vaccine roll out in the uk has been so quick is because there's been no queue jumping, no variations, no deviations. You get your appointment, you get your jag. I'm personally not that concerned about covid itself, but I took the one I was offered (AZ) as it's the best way not to pass it on to the vulnerable and to get back to normal life.

Maybe once the main roll out is complete they'll have the space to pander to the fussy.

Grellbunt · 30/06/2021 10:21

Just as well so many over 40s were prepared to take the risk eh? Otherwise we wouldn't have been able to let the football go ahead.

Grellbunt · 30/06/2021 10:23

I'd rather be fussy than dead or brain damaged, thanks. Different if there hadn't been an alternative vaccine in existence but when there is there is no reason to withhold it purely based on age. Some over 40s are healthier and less vulnerable to covid itself than under 40s.

WouldBeGood · 30/06/2021 10:56

Tiny, tiny risks to adults. In fact they’re talking about giving it to under 40s again.

Don’t take it if you don’t want it. I’m an AZ double jagged smunt awaiting freedom

Scottishskifun · 30/06/2021 11:01

Majority of my friends over 40 have had Pfizer not AZ and the drop in clinics for 18 and over definitely use Pfizer or moderna.

Maybe just attend a drop in clinic which isn't over 40 specific and ask for Pfizer? 🤷‍♂️

Scottishskifun · 30/06/2021 11:06

Not sure where you have got 1 in 10,000 figure from either it's 1 in 100,000 blood clot risk and 1 in 345,000 risk of death from it.

The percentage does increases with decrease in agebut not to that level as far as I'm aware from research articles

Scottishskifun · 30/06/2021 11:07

British heart foundation figures BTW and further details

ElephantOfRisk · 30/06/2021 11:25

Let's not let common sense get in the way please! That's a good link thanks.

Maybe more would have been jagged by now if they had come up earlier with a decent scheme for younger folk and students who might be less likely to get a letter and turn up due to the fact they are more mobile in terms of addresses, and more likely to be working in jobs that are less flexible, less likely to keep their details up to date with GPs. Probably been a lot of wastage and missed appointments.

I'd have no issue with my young adult DSs getting AZ, same as I would have no issue with a daughter on the pill (or myself back in the day)

To be honest I wouldn't have got anything if it was just me I was considering but it is what it is.

WouldBeGood · 30/06/2021 11:29

I saw someone on Twitter saying that she had no worries having been faced with the dire warnings of toxic shock syndrome every time she inserted a tampon 😂

Scottishskifun · 30/06/2021 11:46

😂 Sorry @elephantofrisk damn my analytical and problem solving mentality!

😂 I'm a 35 year old walking (slowly not very far) advert for getting vaccinated! In fact several friends tod me directly they booked their jabs after seeing me not sure to take it personally or not?! 🤔😂

RailingOnAndOn · 30/06/2021 12:33

Lothians have opened up drop in vaccinations to over 18s!
