I'm not having a dig at the volunteers.
But that's it exactly not having the capacity to absorb the extra hassle of covid and running the risk of SI. Not everyone gets paid to SI or can work from home.

It's just more stuff kids are missing out on while, adults are free to go to the pub. Fairness seems to have gone out the window.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 24/06/2021 12:13

@ResilienceWanker what completely stupid Covid rule means parents have to stay when they previously didn't?

Honestly, so many of the rules are nonsensical!!

I worry about the music funding too actually - I think cutting that was a way of cutting school hours, as proposed by Fife Council a few years ago.

shouldistop · 24/06/2021 12:21

There's so many rules that don't make sense. At my 4yo's swimming lessons which we just started, due to covid rules a parent has to be in the water with them.
But due to COVID rules I'm not allowed in the playground to take him to school. Except on the first day when he starts later.

I've been having a chuckle at Linda Bauld tweeting that we don't know the reasons yet why covid is spiking in young men, and Davidson replying 'one for Sherlock, this'.

British Grand Prix going ahead with its maximum capacity of 140,000….

I agree. Also, I think how things have "reopened" is often hugely different to what volunteers signed up for, so you can't really blame them! Keeping a group of kids entertained and safe doing crafts or something in a church hall is hugely different to having them outside, having to stop them running into traffic, having to design stuff that isn't affected too much by the weather, lugging tables and chairs outside and cleaning everything at the end and so on. Or indeed, trying to entertain and engage them on Zoom as groovee says.

I'm in a right grump with how my church has been running the "reopening" of the children's groups. It was bad enough on Zoom, and then outside in whatever weather with more rules on bubbles and sanitising and quarantining paper than you could shake a stick at. But now, when services are allowed back with decent numbers of congregation, we're STILL outside (OK, not too bad in summer), not allowed in for communion ("because there are vulnerable people...and we need to maintain social distancing and stay within our numbers") and treated as an entirely separate group rather than part of the worship, just a bit more interesting for children... It's really making me reconsider helping in the new term, because they obviously don't consider the children to be just as important a part of the congregation as adults Angry

I'm finding the rules for kids starting school absolutely nuts.

Staggering the start time I get it. But must be a real pain for parents who have kids in different years to collect/ drop.

First week,
P2&3 start at 8.45 finish 2.45
P4-7 start at 9.00 finish 3.00
P1 either 9.10 or 9.15 finish 3.05 or 3.15.

And don't throw them on the school bus in the first week either. Oh and don't park at the school.

Seriously how to make life hard.

Precisely! It's (apparently) because the coaches aren't allowed to get too close to the children to stop them from falling, or breaking a leg or anything, so the parents have to do it instead. Because of course, all parents are trained gymnasts and know what is safe... And I thought under 12s didn't need to distance anyway - though the gymnastics body says the coaches do... It's a Fucking health and safety disaster waiting to happen, frankly. DS managed to fall off a vault on the first week back in April because the coaches weren't able to catch him, and for school age children, parents aren't allowed in the building at all even when it is snowing and minus 5 outside. If he was doing anything at any height or greater level of complexity than what he does in the playground I'd be pretty worried to be honest (even with their squishy mats). But, hey, duty of care doesn't seem to matter with covid.

🤣 Yes I saw that post, with Linda Bauld's post literally linking to a news report with a picture of young men in football shirts jumping around. I do feel sorry for LB sometimes as she seems a bit hamstrung into following the party line. So after all the controversy over the football fan zones and the actions of the Tartan army etc., and lowering the levels in spite of increasing cases in time for Euro2020 but not for people's wellbeing or businesses obviously, plebs we have cases soaring again. Can't have this reflecting badly on the SG though, so instead we have all this nonsense about not knowing why cases are rising, and it doesn't matter anyway because we have vaccines now and have done for over 6 months but let's gloss over that. I actually agree that the number of cases doesn't matter much now, but I do enjoy watching them tie themselves up in knots trying to justify everything. And at least they have finally abandoned the 'maximum suppression' nonsense.

Grin Who is Linda B anyway? I thought she was just an academic, so just advising, rather than employed in a government position like oor Jason. So I've been surprised she has developed so much of a "party line". But, no, the spike in young men is completely mysterious... Can't think of anything recently that could have caused that...

So with mine being one primary class apart (now adults though) I would potentially have to hang about from 8.45 after dropping my P2 and wait with my new P1 (where?) for half an hour and then do the same with opposite child at the end of the day. What if I work? what if I didn't live close enough to just drag then back and forward multiple times. What if I was a childminder doing a school drop/pick up for multiple DC in different primary ages?

Bonkers.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 24/06/2021 13:06

I don't think she is government affiliated @ResilienceWanker

There are about 20 people in the Covid 19 advisory group, but I'm pretty sure she isn't one of them.

Ooof. Is that for August? When we're beyond tier zero? (I get schools have to plan timetabling way in advance, so may have arranged this before Tuesday's announcement). That seems total overkill if they keep that long term. Though in our school we have always had a half hour difference at the end of the day between P1 and 2, who finish at 2.45, and the rest who finish 3.15. And it's always been a right PITA for parents having to hang around with younger siblings. Our ASC did a cheap half hour session just for that reason! Mind you, Edinburgh has always had scant regard for working parents with its half day Friday...

Yes, that was kind of what I thought. She just seemed to be a friendly academic the BBC used to explain stuff - and though she has always been "cautious" she never seemed to follow a particular "line" in the past. She would say why she thought the SG would have done something, but not if she thought that was a good or bad idea or anything - and would often give the opposing view too. She does seem to have got a bit more partisan recently, though - or maybe that's just my perception. Nothing to do with her OBE or anything, I'm sure. I do always admire her flowers, though. I wish I was together enough to always have fresh flowers in my office.
Lockdownbear · 24/06/2021 13:19

Yes that's for August and you aren't allowed in the playground. Honestly it makes no sense.

I do get the idea of starting a little later on the first day just to get the older kids in before the P1s start arriving but it makes more sense to let the P1s out first rather than later.

Which also means parents can collect them an get out the way before the rest come out, and be home before the school buses.

WouldBeGood · 24/06/2021 13:20

Get in touch with local councillor to bring this up with council education committee. These rules should absolutely NOT be in place in august in view of announcements in parliament this week

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 24/06/2021 13:40

You do have to wonder what a party has to do to not be transphobic in the eyes of the Greens. Denounce biological sex completely? Outlaw medical textbooks that describe males and females?
