I was wondering what the general thoughts of the Scotnet users are on the events today?
Sorry in advance if it's been asked already.

Proud day for Glasgow. Smile

Brcaml · 13/05/2021 22:11

Yeah, it looks like people have had enough and are taking a stand against the dawn raids. Proper community spirit.

The Home Office doing a raid on Eid is just unbelievable.

forfucksakenett · 13/05/2021 22:15

Proud of NS intervening. Shocking decision by HO.

Brcaml · 13/05/2021 22:16

Yeah like raiding a Christian on Christmas day. Where has the humanity gone when government departments make decisions like this, no empathy at all.

Does anyone know if it was true that Humza was there on the ground trying to get a resolution? I heard a rumour but couldn't find confirmation.

It's quite a provocative act. The two men have been here for 10 years ( it just said so on ITV news). I was tearing up watching one of the men when interviewed , he was so grateful to the people of Glasgow that supported them.
MissSM9102 · 13/05/2021 22:32

Humza was in parliament attempting to work with The Home Office.
Aamer Anwar was on the ground and helped negotiations with the police and the men were released into his custody, not saying yourself OP but many people have got them confused. I’ve been watching twitter tell Aamer he’s got a party to run instead or should stick to his day job as a minister Grin
A great day for Scotland.

WouldBeGood · 13/05/2021 22:43

I’m very pleased that the protest was so well supported and that a better outcome was reached.

But the whole border force thing was despicable. This must stop.

SixesAndEights · 13/05/2021 22:44

Love The National headline front page for tomorrow:

Glasgow 1
'Team UK' 0

Grin

Seeing some really heartwarming tweets from people in the local community.

WouldBeGood · 13/05/2021 22:46

I don’t find it helpful to make this a partisan debate.

StarryEyeSurprise · 13/05/2021 22:46

It's sad the SG have literally no power to stop these raids happening.

Indeed. So proud.
Haudyourwheesht · 13/05/2021 22:50

I thought it was wonderful. So pleased with the people of Glasgow.

Unfortunately the rangers fans are going to use it as an excuse to kick up shite in the centre on Saturday. I've already seen it on Twitter.

Brcaml · 13/05/2021 22:52

Thank you @MissSM9102 for confirming that for me, I saw people saying Aamer and others saying Humza and didn't know which one was correct, just glad someone was there to help the men in the end.

@Haudyourwheesht what? I don't understand. What does it have to do with football?

And just to add that I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall on Ms Patel's office this evening. I just hope she doesn't try to push through some sort of draconian law like the yhave in England preventing peaceful protests in Scotland to stick the boot in.

Immigration needs to be devolved so that the Scottish Parliament has the ability to choose to grow its population if it wants to. It's interesting to think that when the two countries formed the union England had around 5 million people and Scotland 1 million. So, England's increased x 12ish, and Scotland by x 5ish. Increasing equally would mean a Scotland with 12 million people!

Personally, I quite like fewer people, but there's definitely room for growth, and there's an openness to immigration in Scotland that isn't replicated in England, so it's unhelpful to have policies that might work for England also used in Scotland.

Invisimamma · 13/05/2021 23:50

I have been quite emotional watching this today. Very proud of Glasgow.

I remember the Glasgow Girls campaign a while ago (10yrs?) to end dawn raids. Led by a group of inspiring secondary school girls. The injustice and inhumanity of how people were treated really stuck with me and I'm glad Glasgow managed to prevent this today.

workwoes123 · 14/05/2021 06:47

I know nothing about it.

What were the protesters against?

Dawn raids?
HO doing this on Eid (though I have read that the men were Sikhs)?
Not agreeing with removing or deporting anyone, whatever the reason or their immigration status?
Knowing the men personally and wanting to protect them?
Not agreeing with the current (English? UK?) immigration laws as they are and protesting against them?
Not liking an “English” organisation coming to Scotland to carry out its duties ?

I just read a long piece in the guardian about how dire and badly run and not fit for purpose the Home Office is.

What is the immigration status of the two men? Why was the HO trying to deport them?

StarryEyeSurprise · 14/05/2021 06:54

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure the UK Government still will not allow the families of unaccompanied refugee children to join them in the UK.
@Haudyourwheesht what? I don't understand. What does it have to do with football?
I've seen a number of football fans on social media today saying that if "Humza and his mates" are allowed to gather for this reason, there is no reason why they shouldn't gather on Saturday. I'll try to find a screenshot.

Haudyourwheesht · 14/05/2021 07:15

That didn't take long.
