I was wondering what the general thoughts of the Scotnet users are on the events today?
Sorry in advance if it's been asked already.

I thought it was amazing. I was quite emotional watching it.

Quincie · 14/05/2021 07:24

Wow that's going to be helpful for England post indyref - all unwanted immigrants can just cross the border.

Morgan12 · 14/05/2021 07:27

And they will be very welcome 😁

weegiemum · 14/05/2021 07:31

People Make Glasgow! We used to live just down the road from Kenmure Street, it's a great community.

I've just seen this elsewhere well done that community, it is a bloody disgrace anyway but on Eid is just terrible.

charliebrown59 · 14/05/2021 07:54

fantastic action by the people directly involved - I'm unsure we can take broader credit though, and the usual beside the point political stuff being hitched to some lovely community action.

Despicable thing to do at any time of the year.

I hope this inspires makes people get more involved in their local community groups, there are lots and how many of you are members of parent councils, neighbourhood park groups, any community group? Feeling a referred glow? perhaps join up with some of your local groups.

Brcaml · 14/05/2021 08:47

@Haudyourwheesht the mental gymnastics involved with the people saying it justifies them meeting on Saturday is staggering, no compassion at all and clearly very self involved.

As someone who used to live in the area, I'm incredibly proud but not surprised, there is a wonderful community spirit here which I miss.

I cried watching the news and it all unfolding. So pleased it was a peaceful protest which worked. The home office referring to a "mob" and Scotland as "our country" is so inflammatory and says a lot about the thinking at Westminster still. I dread to think of how this is being reported south if the border!

Brcaml · 14/05/2021 09:27

@Clydie89 Yeah I suspect it will be reported as 'mob rule' instead of 'people power' and 'peaceful protest' to suit the narrative they want to present down south. It is very tiresome and predictable now and they never fail to spin it they way they want it.

Alex Tiffin - FND, BPD (@RespectIsVital) Tweeted:
If you live in or around Glasgow and see a Home Office Immigration Enforcement Vehicle, here's a number to contact.
Also saw this on twitter if anyone is interested, I might just prevent others from the horrors of being spirited away to deportation centres.

You don't even need to know where it's going. #RefugeesWelcome t.co/0k6CjN04N0 twitter.com/RespectIsVital/status/1392909961819299840?s=20

Any evidence it is being spun like that? The front page of the guardian was pretty complimentary.

I'm sure there are a huge amount of people 'down south' who are pleased that this direct community action stopped the deportation.

Haudyourwheesht · 14/05/2021 09:48

@Brcaml Indeed.

Brcaml · 14/05/2021 09:54

@charliebrown59

Yeah the Glasgow Times ran an article using a quote from a Home Office source.

Not really evidence of much in terms of general uk opinion.

Anyway, I've got nothing more to say here, we all have a bias and a narrative we impose on news stories, I suggest that we all take getting more involved in local community groups from this as I said.

Dissimilitude · 14/05/2021 10:05

I disagree with provocative methods of deportation. No need for dawn raids or removing people from their homes on Eid or any other significant festival day.

I have absolutely no idea about the worthiness or otherwise of their asylum claim, and I would be concerned if we get into a situation where we cannot have a rules-based system because it becomes a useful proxy battle for all sorts of other agendas.

We still need rules, and we need to refuse people asylum where we believe they are not eligible.

Wbeezer · 14/05/2021 10:18

I'm not against immigration as a whole but just saying everybody welcome, the more the merrier without positive plans about how to accommodate and provide a good quality life for them and realistic ideas about how much that would cost, while also meeting the needs of existing communities (of all backgrounds) is not realistic, it needs openly discussed policy wise rather than being reacted to piecemeal. Not very surprisingly it's actually avoided as detailed discussion in manifestos because immigration as an abstract policy is not that popular with the electorate in private even though lots of people react positively to actual immigrants that they form relationships with.
I don't really think Scots are somehow morally superior to others in their attitude to immigration, the fact that we have mainly had a trickle of immigration post war rather than more rapid changes in population had been a factor in attitudes to immigration here.
I can admire the good Samaritan attitudes of the men's neighbours while at the same time being a bit cynical about some who jump on band wagons.
That being said, not a big fan of how the Home Office goes about its business, it often seems unnecessarily cruel.

cakelover75 · 14/05/2021 10:22

So proud of Glasgow just now Smile

Wrennie24 · 14/05/2021 10:46

@MissSM9102

Humza was in parliament attempting to work with The Home Office. Aamer Anwar was on the ground and helped negotiations with the police and the men were released into his custody, not saying yourself OP but many people have got them confused. I’ve been watching twitter tell Aamer he’s got a party to run instead or should stick to his day job as a minister Grin A great day for Scotland.
Aamer Anwar is a human rights lawyer. I think Twitter are confusing him with Anas Sarwar the lead of the Scottish Labour Party.
charliebrown59 · 14/05/2021 11:10

No question that Aamer deserves much credit here.

florafoxtrot · 14/05/2021 11:36

Found the scenes very emotional. As others have said, the community spirit shown is inspiring.

Will be interested to see how it all plays out but hope the men involved are being well supported over the next few days.

www.believeinscotland.org/its-morning-again-in-scotland/

Great article. As it says, people in other parts of the UK have and will stand up for injustice like the people of Glasgow did yesterday.

There is, however, a chasm between the humanity shown by our two governments.

StarryEyeSurprise · 14/05/2021 12:28

Oh and they've changed it now but the Mail twisted the FM's words and used those describing the HO as her slating Police Scotland ( who she'd actually praised in the same statement).

charliebrown59 · 14/05/2021 12:57

the Daily Mail, that well known beacon of accurate unbiased reporting, twisting the truth? Surely not!

It's like expecting Richard Murphy to decide there is some truth to GERS.
