Struggling to see how East ren can stay in tier 2 now

RaraRachael · 20/05/2021 14:26

When is NS going to give an update on whether Moray/Glasgow can go into Tier 3? I'm Moray and our rate per 100 000 has halved.

titsintiers · 20/05/2021 14:35

I think she said tomorrow. Great news Moray has improved, hopefully down to tier 2

SoMuchForSummerLove · 20/05/2021 14:42

The link between cases and hospitalisations doesn't really appear to be broken does it?

ElephantOfRisk · 20/05/2021 14:50

The problem with the "case" figures and particularly with the hospitalisations is that the hospital figure is also those that test positive rather than those ill with covid, so when covid is circulating in the community at any level, more cases means more people in hospital who test positive, even though they might be in because they've had a heart attack or broken a leg or whatever. That's the problem really. We aren't tracking those who have a clinical diagnosis of covid that is the reason for them presenting in hospital or ICU.

This is why people are annoyed and frustrated.

StarryEyeSurprise · 20/05/2021 14:59

35- 44 age group has the most hospitalisations. I'm livid that thousands were let in directly from India whilst the PM was out there signing a trade deal. Some scientists stating this is the start of the 3rd wave. Ugh. A move to Oz or New Zealand is very appealing

latissimusdorsi · 20/05/2021 14:59

That's true @ElephantOfRisk
Are the hospital numbers up today?

weebarra · 20/05/2021 15:07

Two classes at DS2 and DD's school just been sent home.

titsintiers · 20/05/2021 15:07

Whereabouts are you @weebarra?

SoMuchForSummerLove · 20/05/2021 15:10

It's fucking infuriating isn't it Starry.

The level of cognitive dissonance is frightening. In one column of a newspaper you've got predictions of a third wave based on the India variant. And on the other articles about countries (ours and in Europe) opening up to tourists. And NOBODY seems bothered that Johnson has done it again. Fucked up border control for absolutely no good reason.

@latissimusdorsi they're at 83, which is the highest for a month.

Scottishskifun · 20/05/2021 15:19

But the only people allowed in were British citizens returning or for a very short list of exempt travel reasons 🤷‍♂️

It's not like it was just people randomly having a jolly! The paperwork is pretty extensive as well.

I don't think it's right to leave citizens stranded ask the Aussies or Kiwis who have been stuck for over a year unable to work unable to get home!

rookiemere · 20/05/2021 15:22

I think it's crazy that some foreign holidays allowed when we appear to be on such a knife edge of which way this is going to go, plus we're very far from full freedom in the UK.

Of course in Scotland we're unlikely to get much of the easing but all of the subsequent locking down.

I guess we just have to hope that hospitalisations don't rise.

rookiemere · 20/05/2021 15:26

But @Scottishskifun no matter how justified their reasons were or how well stamped the paperwork, the net result is the introduction of a new strain that may or may not be more infectious and more severe for younger people.

It would make more financial sense for the government to pay for the quarantine of anyone returning from an identified high risk country as soon as it's identified. But that wouldn't be palatable either so we never get rid of the risk.

Scottishskifun · 20/05/2021 15:27

Hate to say it but it's a fast mutating virus, variants aren't a question of if but when.
It's going to be a continuous cycle until global vaccinations have caught up to break chains and reduce number of occasions.

There are already way more variants than the public is aware of just because it mutates. Its only if it becomes one of concern do you hear about it.
Variants can also occur anywhere and within people so their could be a Scottish irn bru one soon!

The blame culture of blocking a single country is pretty futile another one will appear somewhere else and still get in. We rely on lorry freight for goods and food we don't have the luxury of blocking everything!

ScotlandUnited · 20/05/2021 15:32

Boris didn't go to India though did he? He cancelled it?

I think the current traffic light system is actually quite clear, the problem is that people are ignoring it and I think it will be difficult to police it.
Are the airports saying "hang on Mr Bloggs, what is the purpose of your trip?" and asking that question to the 100 people behind him?

Are the travel agents and plane companies going "ooooh we aren't taking your booking?"

So I think you can't blame everything on either the UK or Scottish government. Its people ignoring the rules and/or making up their own rules because they either want a holiday or want the business.

It's actually unbelievable. The people coming in from India without the need to quarantine had 50 times the infection rate of the UK. Yet again, we all need to suffer when we're just at the point where we could a) live normally b) not have people seriously ill and dying from Covid in large numbers. Worse still, Hancock and Johnson's friends and family will make even more money from contracts.
WouldBeGood · 20/05/2021 15:33

@Scottishskifun yep, I agree.

WouldBeGood · 20/05/2021 15:35

We’d actually be better to use our extra vaccines to vaccinate the vulnerable in other countries instead of children and young people here. Much more effective, and humane.

WouldBeGood · 20/05/2021 15:39

And good point
Scottishskifun · 20/05/2021 15:39

They did have to quarantine though just not in a hotel.
It's individuals deciding to ignore it not the govt and they also shut down a loophole pretty quickly of people trying to travel via Turkey.

This virus isn't static. I suggest watching the panaroma show on it a while ago it gave a great breakdown of how it behaves.

They found 37!!!! Mutations in one person that's potentially 37 different variants (that was a UK patient BTW).
It's a quick changing virus it's why so many of us shook our heads at SG saying they were going to treat it like measles outbreak...... It doesn't work its too quick.

Vaccination is literally the only way out.

rookiemere · 20/05/2021 15:56

I don't disagree with a lot of what you're saying @Scottishskifun but we all know that "at home quarantining " is meaningless and people coming from Amber countries are unlikely to follow it. I know it won't get rid of variants but a proper quarantine would reduce it and is surely better than the draconian measures we'll all be subject to - yet again - if a new variant with higher death rates does arrive, or indeed any variant that causes numbers to rise.

randomsabreuse · 20/05/2021 16:13

Problem is home quarantine is pretty ineffective especially if you go shopping on the way home, go home by public transport and are at home with people who didn't travel therefore aren't quarantining.

Also not segregating arrivals at the airport is fairly unhelpful as well - so there's a strong case for all arrivals to quarantine at a hotel regardless of origin.
