Just in case railing remains required.

We're always borrowing whiteboard markers from each other. The cupboard is locked so if you're teaching it's hard to get in.

We've just had lots of new tech equipment as well.

I but lots of stuff - usually it's extras though. Posters, treats for kids etc. I do have everything I need provided but no fancy stuff. Fair enough. I buy that myself.

Groovee · 28/03/2021 17:01

@WouldBeGood

Just say you’re him on the phone *@Groovee* - as it’s Scotland it will be a hate crime if they accuse you of sounding like a woman 😃
😂 oh that's made me laugh.
Groovee · 28/03/2021 17:03

I bought white board markers for nursery and they've gone walkabout. 🤬🤬

Mistressofmany · 28/03/2021 18:32

I hide the stuff I buy Blush not just markers, board cleaners and pencils but projector remotes, those pointer thingys, extra leads for equipment, extension leads, a Visualizer, paper, decorative stuff and paint.
Actually I don't hide the power cables, that would be ridiculous!

Groovee · 28/03/2021 20:12

Oh I hid everything then 2 school staff decided to tidy.

Haudyourwheesht · 28/03/2021 21:12

Many schools have loads of extra money this year as we've not bought as many books, jotters, folders...

On a different note, is jotters a Scottish word? Auto correct is not having it.

Lidlfix · 28/03/2021 21:34

Apparently it is, a friend followed her DH and his job to England, soon found work herself on day one instructed the class to get their jotters out. Blank faces all round. Repeated request slowly. The same.

Discussion followed which revealed the pupils called jotters exercise books.

tiredoftiers · 28/03/2021 22:28

@StarryEyeSurprise absolutely agree. School lunches in our area are a disgrace. The menu is processed everything and double carbs most meals, there is macaroni cheese with potato wedges, chicken burger in a bun, with smiley faces. The only veg served is salad. They will hide behind covid, but that really is the worst excuse ever for serving children horrific food. As its a disease that is proven to impact on obese people more.
You cannot make a point out of making the meals free for every child because children are not being fed properly at home due to poverty/ circumstance and not ensure that what they are being fed at school is a healthy diet.

ResilienceWanker · 28/03/2021 22:29

Haha! Yes, it's definitely not one I knew. It's one of the few words DS says in a Scottish accent as he'll only have heard it at school, and took me ages to work out what he meant (what's a jawter, and why did Finlay spill milk on it?!). Exercise book or notebook, definitely.

Scottishskifun · 29/03/2021 04:58

Jags is a word which got me for weeks I kept thinking it was being mispronounced jabs! But it's not used in the NE of Scotland really and still sounds funny to me!

Lockdownbear · 29/03/2021 07:27

Jotters is the proper name according to Amazon, I bought some during lockdown.

Serving double carbs with every meal totally defeats the purpose of FSMs. The logic behind giving them to all kids was to broaden their diet. Poor kids not getting enough protein and rich kids getting too much sugar.

ResilienceWanker · 29/03/2021 09:02

Burn (small stream) got me for a while. And the whole J pronounced as Jai thing - but that may just be regional. Jotters to me are small (phone sized) spiral bound notebooks that detectives use for noting down clues. Very, very specific!

I'm a huge fan of double carbs occasionally (and triple... lasagne, chips and garlic bread mmmmm) but, no, if children aren't getting enough veg or protein and a varied diet outside school then that's very bad. Another rail for me is how the variety of school lunches has decreased. Pre lockdown there used to be soup and a choice of a meat or veggie dish or a baked potato. Now they're eating in their classrooms, there is no soup, and a single hot option (or "hot" - the pasta never makes it hot apparently, so is inedible according to DS) that is sometimes veggie and sometimes meat, or ham, tuna egg or cheese in some kind of sandwich form (the bread style varies). So a vegetarian child is limited to about half the "main" meals if they're not fussy about quality, or basically a cheese sandwich (no sane person would choose an egg sandwich of indeterminate temperature and unknown storage - I'm with him there). DS is a big fan of cheese sandwiches luckily, and does eat well outside school, so I'm not that worried (also I'm far too lazy to sort packed lunches routinely) but it's not great given its supposedly the "same" as pre lockdown. No, it's not the biggest issue in the world (I mean, we're not dead or anything) and, yes, I could solve it entirely by being less lazy, but it's one more thing that's making life that bit shitter cos covid.

SempreSuiGeneris · 29/03/2021 09:44

Full agreement on the direness of school meals here. Our school doesn't even have a kitchen so all meals are brought in pre-cooked and lukewarm. Several bouts of upset tummy during P1 and I decided making pieces was less effort than dealing with sick bowls.

Pieces is a foreign word outside Scotland too. I have London friends who are Billy Connolly fans and professed not to understand it. No idea what they think we fling out 20 storey flats.

Lockdownbear · 29/03/2021 09:55

Skelf not even sure if that's the the right spelling. I recall sitting at work discussing how to remove a skelf. English guy in the corner 'a what?'
Resulting in at least 6 of us trying to think what was the English word for skelf.

We eventually got splinter.Grin

SempreSuiGeneris · 29/03/2021 10:01

I had that in reverse. DH (imported) complaining of a splinter and me looking at him like he was daft cos I was expecting half a plank through his foot as opposed to a microscopic skelf in his thumb. Grin

WouldBeGood · 29/03/2021 11:38

I’m feeling really fed up about not knowing about school for DS. And having nothing to do. And the weather.

OP posts:
ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 29/03/2021 11:45

Yes, what's up with the weather? Doesn't it know it's spring? It's not doing anything to help.

shouldistop · 29/03/2021 11:50

Baby ds is giving me a hard time this morning. Screaming every time I'm not in sight, won't sleep unless he's attached to me. I've barely even had a drink of water so now have a thumping headache. Can't even just stick him in the pram and go for a walk as the weather is terrible.
How long for a toddler group in a church hall with sympathetic ladies making me a cup of tea!
Thank god it's a nursery day for ds1.

shouldistop · 29/03/2021 11:52

I had no idea jotter was a Scottish word either!

cyclingbear · 29/03/2021 11:56

On the subject of Scottish things. I remember as a kid whilst on holiday at a relatives caravan in East Lothian having what was essentially a picnic at teatime but I’m sure was mostly just crisps, cakes, chocolate. And it was called a Beano.

I have no idea why it was called this or the purpose of it as it’s a bit vague in my memory.
Anyone else heard of this before? I must ask my siblings to see if they remember at all

Replays · 29/03/2021 12:02

Name changed and not really been keeping up with this thread but I just want to have a rant somewhere about our primary school being closed the day of the election.

Not a huge surprise. But FFS!!!!! Angry

shouldistop · 29/03/2021 12:09

Yeah ds nursery is closed for the election too. Which means it's closed on the Monday & Thursday that week. Also closed Friday & Monday for Easter.

Lockdownbear · 29/03/2021 12:25

It really grinds my gears about schools being closed for voting.

Wound me up as a child that the RC school I had to walk past was shut for the day and mine wasn't.

Winds me up now as an adult that I need to sort childcare for my DS.

latissimusdorsi · 29/03/2021 12:29

Oh don't get me started on some schools and nurseries closed for electionsAngry
Always the same ones in my town

Replays · 29/03/2021 12:45

I just hoped with them having missed so much school already that some imagination would've been employed in finding alternatives.

And nice to think the kids & teachers will be back in the next day after lots of people traipsing in the school building when we're not allowed into anyone's homes yet. Will they be taking details for contact tracing?
