SNP supporters and the hate crime bill

Scottish government are passing a bill tonight that will give hate crime protection to every protected characteristic - apart from sex. Yes, women apparently don't register as far as hate crimes go.

But cross dressers will be protected so that's fine - don't insult a man in a kilt even in your own home, as you could be arrested. However, every day misogyny - that's fine.

SNP supporters - are you ok with this????

I actually want to weep this morning. I’m so disappointed in Labour.
Where do we even go from here?

WouldBeGood · 12/03/2021 09:49

Is it more important to vote to reduce the SNP majority or to vote for those who voted against the bill?

I’m wondering

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/03/2021 09:58

I think that's where you need to try to balance, it looks like for my area it's the same thing. However, I think it's about getting snp out too, caught between a rock and a hard place, could be a split vote for constituency and list?

Beepbeeprichie · 12/03/2021 10:02

I’m voting for whoever is most likely to topple SNP in my constituency and 2nd vote for A4U. George Galloway says he will repeal the bill if elected- I think he’s the only one.
Oh Anas.... I had such high hopes. Sad

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/03/2021 10:12

I'm sick of folk who want protection for women being called racist and transphobic etc because they oppose the bill. Just yet another way to abuse the women and men who want the same rights for everyone.

The usual mouthpieces telling other folk not to abuse while doing exactly that.

More division spread across the country, more control on our everyday lives exerted.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 12/03/2021 10:45

@WaxOnFeckOff I feel the same. I'm not reassured by the assurances that the new amendments mean you can safely express opinions, because the 'intent to harm' bit seems pretty open to interpretation still. Patrick Harvie provided the clearest signal you could possibly get that certain factions will use this to shut down women's groups wanting single sex spaces with his disgraceful attack on Johann Lamont. Even if discussion about women's rights wouldn't lead to a conviction, you could still get people ending up in court (and who's going to take that chance), and the landscape has been set that 'sex is not binary' is a valid argument, so the net effect will still be the silencing of these voices.

The creep by the state into our personal lives and spaces also continues, and we should all very uncomfortable with that.

@LizzieMacQueen is that produced by A4U?!

anon444877 · 12/03/2021 11:30

why would I vote labour in Edinburgh Northern and Leith when nobody standing for labour in the constituency stood up for women?

Agree Y0u and how long is it before some desperate parent of a mentally ill teen gets dragged in front of a court for 'intending to cause harm' because they aren't happy for their teen/preteen/young adult to start transitioning and have tried to have some conversations about it?

anon444877 · 12/03/2021 11:33

Women's rights transcend the independence issue for me, if I had one of the SNP dissenters in my constituency I'd vote for them, but I don't think it's so important because the SNP are going to get plenty of votes anyway so those dissenters are probably safe, except from internal SNP party politics.

UnderHisAye · 12/03/2021 11:37

I think I'm going to vote ISP. I do still want to register my support for an independent Scotland, but one that does not intend to make women invisible and unsafe.

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/03/2021 11:39

But then it is about independence as well. It's the SNP have that come up with this crock of shit, they will be the ones negotiating any separating agreement and no doubt ruling over the corrupt shit show if people keep voting for them.

I'm not ideologically opposed to independence at some point if it's the right decision for Scotland but we need to get the country well run before that's any kind of option for me.

Any vote for them is a vote for this imho regardless of how any individual might have voted. I might vote for a Labour candidate who voted for it if that would oust an SNP candidate from a seat but in my area it'll be tory and tory.

UnderHisAye · 12/03/2021 11:40

Not sure what this is all about yet but I'll read it properly when I get a break

That was John finnie Green Party speaking in parliament

WouldBeGood · 12/03/2021 11:49

@UnderHisAye that’s about the National trying to distract attention from the complete trashing of women’s rights

UnderHisAye · 12/03/2021 11:54

No doubt!

LizzieMacQueen · 12/03/2021 12:07

@Graffitiqueen Yes. From their twitter account.

anon444877 · 12/03/2021 12:12

I can see that too wax - I loathe the way the SNP does things, they are the reason I fear for an independent Scotland. The tories do deserve to pick up votes for their actions in Scotland around hate crime, covid and holding Scot gov to scrutiny about Salmond.

It's amazing the reasonable person test and intent to cause harm were not in the bill originally.

It’s a wee video he put on his Twitter feed. Spoke about the remarks Patrick harvie made against women MSPS speech’s during the debate.

Also said it’s biazzare that men who dress in women’s clothes now have more protection than women

anon444877 · 12/03/2021 12:33

Good video @littlbrowndog

Hmm thought so. I'll be taking that with a pinch of salt. i don;t believe A4U is the best tactical 2nd vote in every consistuency. Seems a waste of a vote to me.

I was going to vote tory 1st then labour on the list, but don't think i can bring myself to vote labour given their votes for the HCB.

UnderHisAye · 12/03/2021 12:42

Funny how A4U turn out to be the tactical vote in at least half the constituencies!

George Galloway is a bloody crank.
