SNP supporters and the hate crime bill

Scottish government are passing a bill tonight that will give hate crime protection to every protected characteristic - apart from sex. Yes, women apparently don't register as far as hate crimes go.

But cross dressers will be protected so that's fine - don't insult a man in a kilt even in your own home, as you could be arrested. However, every day misogyny - that's fine.

SNP supporters - are you ok with this????

Fuck everyone who denied women the protection they have afforded all other groups in society. Fuck them.

This was on Twitter.

and just like that, 82 people removed the rights of 6 million people.

hilbil21 · 11/03/2021 22:46

Can someone tell me what the difference between abstaining and not voting is? If anything? Jackie Baillie hasn't voted but hasn't abstained either. She is my constituency MSP.

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/03/2021 22:50

I'm not sure hilbil. I think maybe they can push a button for yes, no or abstain but sounds like she hasn't voted at all?

Where are you seeing the votes please?

hilbil21 · 11/03/2021 22:52

thank you :)
WaxOnFeckOff · 11/03/2021 23:00

I'm mid Scotland and Fife - all 4 of the Tories voted against and none of the SNP, Labour or Green did. So my votes are going to the Tories.

hilbil21 · 11/03/2021 23:01

It won't let me upload the Fors...but here's a link.

The woman here voted for.

Yet only yesterday tweeted on about wanting women to feel safe and how she has been made to feel uncomfortable by men.

Now what? What makes you think you are going to feel any less uncomfortable if they go by a nice girl mode name as they follow you home late at night?

Yeah you do Hmm

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/03/2021 23:04

So 11 didn't vote - was that a protest in terms of not even giving it any recognition?

EachDubh · 11/03/2021 23:05

It's a horrible night for Scotland and tjose of us who now have to deal with the fallout.

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 11/03/2021 23:48

@LexMitior

Does anyone know what the prosecution standard is? Has the Crown Office opined?

Otherwise, doesn’t this bill effectively allow people’s speech to be judged (rather worryingly) with reference to the standards set by lobby groups?

That seems dangerous for free speech

Very dangerous...in your own home....yet another reason to deny the SNP its majority in May. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Time for a change.
dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 11/03/2021 23:51

@WaxOnFeckOff

So, looking at the voting on the amendment - all SNP with the exception of Joan McAlpine, all greens with the exception of Andy wightman and all the lib dems voted No. All the tories, all labour, those names above and Mark McDonald voted for it.

I think we can see where all women should be voting.

This with bells on.
dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 11/03/2021 23:52

@Graffitiqueen

FFS I'm going to have to vote Tory for the first time ever aren't I?!?! Shock
Yes please do. It's the only way to get the message across to the SNP.
Justme10 · 12/03/2021 08:09

Looks like I'm voting Tory as well, never thought I would say that!

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/03/2021 08:19

It's funny how humza, nicola, John Swinney and Patrick Harvey are leading campaign managers for the Tories now.

anon444877 · 12/03/2021 08:47

Yes both votes tory here too. Hell has officially frozen over.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 12/03/2021 09:04

I might have to vote Tory too. My plan had been labour/Tory but this was a very poor show from labour. Not only were the tories the only ones as a group who actually stopped to think about women, but when it became clear this was going through anyway they have been instrumental in changing it to try to minimise the damage. I mean just think about the initial shit show of a bill that was presented, where just feeling offended was enough, and inflammatory material as banned! Right now, they seem like the only grown ups in a room full of student union activists.

Something else occurred to me this morning, which one of the legal bods on here might know. Since Johann Lamont's amendment that would have defined sex as binary was specifically rejected by the Scottish parliament, has this now set some kind of legal precedent that gives credence to the idea that the definition of 'sex' is somehow up for debate? I'm worried that the more extreme TRAs who want unfettered access to women-only spaces will use this to get around the protections in the equality act.

PufflingPantsOn · 12/03/2021 09:11

Delurking. The lack of media coverage about this is obvious. How easy was it for this to be passed? Eroding our rights as women, eroding our sacred human rights of freedom of speech.

The Bill is so open to interpretation the Scottish Government can effectively shut down all debate, any controversy, anyone with a point of view is fair game. Across journalism, academia, the civil service, the church, anyone who is a threat to independence is met with ridicule, intimidation and fear of the consequences.

I like to have a look to see what independence campaigner, broadcaster, journalist and feminist Lesley Riddoch is saying, just to find out what she is adding to the debate. I've not looked very hard I admit but nowt on her Twitter feed about the Hate Crime Bill. Debate about the Rangers fans, a tweet on International Women's Day, a whole lot of opine about the Meghan & Harry seems to dominate.

WouldBeGood · 12/03/2021 09:15

I’ve been thinking about this.

The first prosecutions will be interesting. I wonder whether it will go the same way as the stupid and ill fated football songs legislation?

I know that the legal profession is very much against this new Act

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 12/03/2021 09:21

I see that wee Nippy is mute on Twitter.

The extransport minister is not.

🤡 🎪

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/03/2021 09:25

So, if sex isn't protected for women or men, I can still call someone an odious fuckface little man or a lying, disgraceful fuckmuppet of a woman as long as I don't link that to race, sexual orientation etc?

Blurberoo · 12/03/2021 09:43

@PufflingPantsOn I was wondering the same about Lesley Riddoch. I’ve loved her since Harpies and Quines in the 90’s, been to lots of her talks and she’s always been an outspoken feminist. I’m surprised she hasn’t had an opinion on TRAs and self ID, unless I’ve missed it somewhere! I’m hoping she makes a stand at some point. I suppose the overarching issue for her is following the Nordic model and independence for Scotland.. and the Nordic model regarding trans issues isn’t great as far as I know.
