So any of us here in greater Glasgow are likely going to be still stuck in Tier 3, basically like things are now but with the odd wee trip to Primark or Ikea (and even that presumably pushing it if it's not in council area) in May when people in England are potentially jetting off to Greece and Cyprus?
That's going to be.... quite some contrast.

Not half.

It is bound to impact on the Scottish elections ,and postpone Indy ref 2.

Seems so unfair and is definitely not following the science

user1487194234 · 11/03/2021 10:15

A lot of young people I know who previously voted SNP are saying definitely won't this time

Very strangely they are talking about voting Tory ,which would have been unheard of when I was a student Smile

anon444877 · 11/03/2021 10:23

There were precisely two tories in my halls when I was a student and they were virtually shunned - one of them ended up having a big role in vote leave (shudders).

That said, the tories are the only party not planning to take away women's rights, the only party with similar views on covid to me...the party that massively backed vaccines (if Scotland had been independent with SNP in charge/had vaccine purchase beeb devolved we'd be on the EU schedule).

The tories have been good at holding the SNP up to scrutiny over the Salmond fiasco too, as have Scottish Labour.

Yeah I just won’t follow that and I know loads of people who will vote according. As a Labour voter all my life I think I might vote Tory this time as best chance of getting those woman haters out .
rookiemere · 11/03/2021 11:11

It seems as bizarre to me that BG would let people fly abroad in May as it is that we'd still be restricted to our own Scottish council areas or health boards or whatever arbitrary area is applied.

I suspect/hope that BG wouldn't be so cavalier as to approve foreign travel in May, when a further 6-8 weeks means most of the adult population would be vaccinated.

But yes I would enjoy a bit of freedom to at least travel round Scotland. If we're outside and all the indoor stuff is closed i'm not sure how we'd be spreading the virus anyway.

theotherfossilsister · 11/03/2021 11:37

I just read that Scotland will all move through the tiers as one, it was the headline on Edinburgh Live. Edinburgh and a few other places are now finally in tier two numbers, despite them being made far more harsh than those recommend by the WHO, and I feel like they are suddenly freaking out at the idea that any of us might get freedom (especially the cities which don't worship at the alter on the SNP.)

Feeling pretty dashed right now as was really clinging to May and being able to go away for five nights at the end of the month, especially as I watched the rates fall. Of course, that isn't good enough for her though.

I feel a bit like Cinderella, being asked to complete an impossible task to be able to go to the all, only to complete the task and have the stepmother turn around and go 'You?! Go to the Ball?' and laugh uproariously.

GirlLovesWorld · 11/03/2021 11:39

I agree - the notion of international travel right now is just cavalierly stupid. Travelling around our own country, yes.

Scottishskifun · 11/03/2021 11:41

I think there is one thing to approve it.... Another for the country your going to to accept you! UK is on a banned list for many many countries still!

The SG surely know that as soon as England is released fully if parts of Scotland are still in tier 3 people will just ignore it!
Most people in England don't really know there are different rules in Scotland so doubt they will refuse accommodation or service for people travelling!

Peppafrig · 11/03/2021 11:43

I live in Glasgow but work in Edinburgh so I have been travelling throughout anyway . I don’t see how people can’t travel to see family within Scotland . As long as all the rules are followed .

GirlLovesWorld · 11/03/2021 11:45

I don't really understand how we can all act as one? The entire region of Fife has about the same number of cases in a week as Glasgow and Clyde had in one day yesterday.

So that's 350,000 people living as if they're in Tier 4 (or whatever it would be) when in old money they'd be a Tier 2 or something.

The alternative is moving too fast for the hardest hit areas which I can't see happening.

It doesn't really make sense to me; that's bowing to pressure I think.

Peppafrig · 11/03/2021 11:48

@GirlLovesWorld I think it would be impossible to stop people going into shops , cinemas etc from the other areas. Unless they put up roadblocks I guess. I travel from Glasgow to Edinburgh everyday all lockdown and have never once been stopped .

GirlLovesWorld · 11/03/2021 11:52

Yeah I don't understand how it would work practically, that's a good point.

I'm not comfortable with everything opening up though, with the vast majority of the over 40s (who are going out to work) unvaccinated.

anon444877 · 11/03/2021 12:27

I can't see that it's fair to allow travel within Scotland and not within rUK if we are all at the same vaccination point.

I can see the logic for waiting on international travel for a few more weeks due to vaccine roll out being more advanced in the UK than elsewhere.

Lockdownbear · 11/03/2021 12:37

I've just saw another report about all adults being vaccinated by end of April.
It's popped up before and almost seems too good to be true.

dancemom · 11/03/2021 12:39

The first minister confirms that a further 591 people have tested positive for Covid - 19, 2.5% of the tests carried out yesterday.
This takes the total number of positive cases in Scotland to 207,747.
There are 556 people in hospital with recently confirmed Covid-19, a decrease of 26, and 42 in intensive care, down seven from yesterday.
There have also been 22 more deaths recorded in the past 24 hours of people who tested positive in the previous 28 days.

In Scotland @Lockdownbear ?

I would love that to be true; I find I'm getting more worried as we get nearer to the end of this for some reason.

I was in the office yesterday and ended up in a meeting with four other people in a tiny room, and it just didn't feel safe.

Yep and it's not! I've said it multiple times on here there is this perception that the SG projects that all of England is riddled with high infection numbers but reality when you look at heat maps is very different. My family is based in the South their council area has never had numbers as high as central belt and often case numbers has been lower than my council area. Which given my area is largely rural and their area isn't initially was quite a surprise!

I think they will try and keep their unicorn border for as long as possible..... Difference is more people will ignore it come May time!

anon444877 · 11/03/2021 12:44

exactly - similar story here, but god forbid you'd let anyone use their own judgment about travelling to meet family in rUK outside whilst staying in self catering accommodation so desperate grandparents and other relatives could see their GC from 2 m...

All GP have had a first dose, even aunties have been done now.

This is true it wouldn’t be fair in the slightest . I selfishly said that as someone with only family in Scotland .
mibbelucieachwell · 11/03/2021 12:47

Better numbers today dancemom Maybe yesterday included figures that had been missed out previously. Hopefully.

rookiemere · 11/03/2021 12:51

Mostly it will hurt the Scottish summer tourist trade from rest of UK.
Who on earth would take the gamble and book when it's so very unclear what you'd be allowed to do.

Whereas although British road map may be over optimistic I feel pretty sure that by July we would be absolutely fine for a week away in England.

My hope is that SG either relax a lot before elections and/or they no longer retain a majority post election and other parties can impose a bit of common sense on proceedings.

IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 · 11/03/2021 12:52

Thanks @dancemom that test positivity rate is good and the hospitalisations seem to just keep falling 🤞

I think we will see stuff speeding up towards the end of this month. The biggest issue any UK governments seem to have is how are they going to make people feel not scared.

Lockdownbear · 11/03/2021 12:58

It was the Metro that someone had tagged on FB. But I can't see why Scotland shouldn't be able to keep up with England. The vaccines are being allocated per head of population.

Can you imagine the May elections if Scotland has hundreds of thousands of vaccines sitting on shelves and England is fully done.

WouldBeGood · 11/03/2021 12:59

@IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 they have scared the shit out of people

Lockdownbear · 11/03/2021 13:03

Eat out to help out was fab at giving people the confidence to get out and once you'd done it once it was easy to do it again.
