@Lockdownbear

Groovee are you and MrG not on the vulnerable list?
I think he may be now. I have underlying health issues but not bad enough to shield. But it's a concern when 3 of us are face to face working in our jobs.

Just need to breathe and believe!

rookiemere · 28/02/2021 11:32

@hilbil21 I moved our Premier Inn booking for English relative visit from Easter weekend to 15/16th April. It's cancellable up to 3 days in advance and amendable thereafter so we're just going to see what happens for the first couple of days after England opens.

If people can't come up from England by August, something will have gone seriously wrong. I'm sure she'd like to stop people coming up but tourist industry needs all the help it can get and numbers are unlikely to justify border restrictions at that point.

Police don't want to and aren't really manning border anyway apparently.

hilbil21 · 28/02/2021 11:35

Does anyone know if you fly to England does anyone at the airport actually ask you where/why you're going??

WouldBeGood · 28/02/2021 11:37

I’m kind of hoping for getting abroad still.

Not booking anything yet though.

@Lockdownbear

Yip good news Tuesday divert attention.

Meanwhile I'm trying to holiday book. Lots of people suggesting Cornwall, not sure if we want to drive so far with a 4yo in the car. Give me your best ideas, please ?

Cornwall is great with a break mid country overnight or day trip. It might seem far away but worth it. We’ve done several times. I reckon it will be a mini Scotland this year, I already know of three families going! (I’d also recommend Dorset and closer to home Northumberland)
jabbathebutt · 28/02/2021 11:40

We looked into cornwall cottages and for a family of 3 and one dog, its over £2000 for a week in a cottage that doesn't actually look that great and there is very little else available so need to look at other places but DD doesn't fancy a holiday in the UK at all cause its boring and DH would rather wait til next year but as soon as I get my jag and face masks are gone (fingers crossed), I need a break.

Lockdownbear · 28/02/2021 11:40

The Police are unlikely to do anything. I was south a couple of weeks ago on business and loads of cars and trucks on the M74, no police in sight.
Think how dangerous it actually is to pull cars over on a motorway, the hard shoulder isn't just a big lay-by, something like 1 in 10 motorway accidents involves a vehicle on the hard shoulder. Why should the police put themselves at that sort of risk?

The only way to police it is to stop the English hotels / holiday parks taking Scottish bookings. UK Gov aren't going to do that, and its out with Scotland's remit.

All the Scot Government can do is stop Scottish places taking English bookings.

hilbil21 · 28/02/2021 11:42

@Lockdownbear yes good point. Will see how the land lies nearer the time Smile

If you mean when you arrive at a Scottish airport? Absolutely not in a way that prevents your travel, you do sometimes get asked from a customer service point of view so they can point you to the right check in desk for your U.K. domestic flight. FWIW, For holidays, it’s worth flying to any London airport, but drive/train is best for most others, such as Manchester (other than Torquay if you’re heading to Cornwall, for example, cuts out ALOT of travel time...if that flight is still operating this year).
hilbil21 · 28/02/2021 11:49

Just trying to figure out if it would be less nerve racking to fly down to London and get the train to Portsmouth in the second week of the Easter holidays than drive down.

rookiemere · 28/02/2021 11:50

Exeter is good if you're traveling to Cornwall, but flights mega expensive since FLybe gone. It looks like flying to Bristol would be a good bet for Devon /cornwall and Bristol itself worth a visit, also Bath and Wookey Hole, but not done it myself so don't know what roads are like.

Coquohvan · 28/02/2021 12:07

@hilbil21

Those of you that are holiday booking, when for??
We keep moving our free to move Tunnel booking, originally for last March. Now it’s end April though in my heart thing perhaps July/August. Weirdly though the French seem to think they’ll get holidays internally. Our house care taker says she’s seen that there has been a flurry of enquiries for bank holidays. How knows !
AgentCooper · 28/02/2021 12:12

@Dinnafashyersel

I have all sorts of joint issues which mean I can't walk endlessly and usually use swimming as physio. I also have a primary school child to keep fit and happy. Closing pools and prohibiting sitting on park benches. Massively disableist. Then when they do open anything up they do it in such as restrictive fashion and make it all survival of the fittest first come first served.

Sorry I am apparently more ragey even than usual this morning although for no good reason. Angry

@Dinnafashyersel you’re so right. So right. I can’t even get my head around how unfair all of those things are.

I’ve driven lots of times but have family in the NW & NE so I can break the journey. If you can have your own car for flexibility and ease of journey once down there it is better, but flight to London and then hire car or train to Portsmouth is easier for time and journey overall. A journey break somewhere around Manchester is good- so much to do for children. Then onwards to London next day is fine until Birmingham where it usually bottlenecks, so kids can be sitting in car needing toilet/to vomit/hungry, which makes it a mare if you get stuck there🤷‍♀️

We should start a Scotsnet holidays thread, prob lots of useful knowledge we could all share re holidays for 21/22

hilbil21 · 28/02/2021 12:18

@Bytheloch I'm not really asking from that perspective, it's more while things are still illegal lol x

Grin I’m obviously so desperate to travel I’m full on with the unsolicited travel advice.

WouldBeGood · 28/02/2021 12:24

Scotsnet holiday thread is a great idea @Bytheloch even if it’s a bit aspirational just now. We could be good to go when (if) freed.

Holidays thread sounds like a great idea.
We're hoping to go on a road trip to England stopping at 3 different locations, mid-July. As one of our stops is staying with relatives, there's probably even less chance that that will go ahead than staying in cottages Sad

rookiemere · 28/02/2021 16:04

I've started a holiday thread - sorry I don't do links - called "Tiers on Tour".

rookiemere · 28/02/2021 16:11

Thank you @WaxOnFeckOff i hope people post on it or I will look desperate and friendless.
I love going on holiday and helping people pick holidays.
