Guilt free railing

The place to vent, moan, rail, cheer: whatever you’re feeling about Covid, and the rules, and life and the universe.

I’ve started this as I’m feeling scared and fed up with increasing restrictions despite vaccines. I feel that what should be a more positive time is instead bringing more and more doom.

I want the simple pleasures of life back, as well as all the big stuff.

@GoldenOmber

I would absolutely kill for a trip to Largs and a sundae at Nardinis right now. Sad
Yes, the tablet ice cream is amazing!
Dyinghouseplant · 13/02/2021 15:38

Oh me too @GoldenOmber. Used to go for a day with my dad and DS every school holiday, miss those days.

shouldistop · 13/02/2021 15:41

Taking about bladders, obviously I had a baby fairly recently so spent the whole of lockdown pregnant. I had a pee Tupperware thing that I took out with me Blush
On one memorable occasion I had to pee in it in the car at the ferry terminal at Largs with a blanket over me.
My poor husband Grin ds1 thought it was hilarious, I kept having to ask him not to tell anyone.

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/02/2021 15:41

@Callisto1

And yeah Sainsbury's click and collect is highly variable when it comes to best before dates and fruit. I remember we once got 12 pints of milk to drink in 2 days...
We drink near 12 pints in 2 days so not too much of an issue on that score Grin
titsbumfannythelot · 13/02/2021 15:42

Motherhood is such a dignifying experience isn't it @shouldistop

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/02/2021 15:44

Its the fact I have 2 pies and 2 quiches and 2 lots of chicken thighs, a big pack of drumsticks, lamb mince and 2 packs of meatballs and a pack of mackerel all to eat by wednesday. And I have stuff already in the fridge for today that needs eaten by today.

shouldistop · 13/02/2021 15:45

@WaxOnFeckOff what times dinner then? Grin

NotAnActualSheep · 13/02/2021 15:48

You know, when I had my foolishly premature thoughts of booking somewhere in Scotland for the summer before quashed by sensible DH I was considering Ayrshire. I've never been apart from an ill fated work trip to Ayr itself when I got horribly lost and ended up in tears in a car park cos I thought I'd never get home... But sundaes and beaches and tablet ice cream sound really appealing right now. (Though the first hotel I looked at advertised its amenities as "colour TV", "clock radio" and "tea and coffee making facilities" but I'm sure I could find somewhere between that and Turnberry if I looked a bit harder...)

NotAnActualSheep · 13/02/2021 15:57

Oh no shouldistop! Mind you, DS and I were on a bus one evening before Christmas and a chap got on, presumably having been drinking somewhere (socially distanced, I'm sure) and was shouting at the driver to hurry up. He then just stood up and pissed into a coke bottle (at least he had the decency to turn away from the bus, but don't like to think what anyone in a car next to us would have seen). DS was reading his comic, but I was praying he wouldn't notice, as he would not have been able to refrain from commenting, and I couldn't see any way in which that would have ended well.

That reminds me of us flying into Newark airport. DS1 was 3.5 and Ds2 2.5. Our seats were 2 in front and 2 behind on rows of 3 with a random passenger in the 3rd seat. Just before we landed, DS1 woke up and was sick (thankfully into a bag) and as we landed and everyone stood up, DS2 decided he needed a pee. Nowhere to move to and the lovely American woman next to me asked if i had a bottle and he could pee in that. I did but it was full of water so i ended up emptying it onto the floor thinking they'd prefer water on the floor than pee and he peed in the bottle - he thought it was hilarious and wanted to pee in bottles for the entire trip. We didn't want to leave that for the staff to clean up so took it with us and entered US customs with a back of sick and a bottle of urine...

We fared better than a colleague who had to go through customers with a naked small girl wrapped in a blanket (his own daughter) with a passport for her with his wife's surname after an onboard vomiting issue. His wife was still on the plane as their son had developed the runs as well and wouldn't get off the toilet!

happy days of holidays - just a reminder not to get too dreamy eyed about them :o

anon444877 · 13/02/2021 17:28

When we came back from Tuscany about 7 years ago, there was a grandma, parents and a boy about 2.5 who screamed the entire 2ish hours of the flight, it was terribly distressing as he was so upset. As we left the plane, the grandma beat it off of the plane and said to us 'I'm never going on holiday with THEM again' Grin

Callisto1 · 13/02/2021 18:00

@NotAnActualSheep, it's a really great park that I've never been to before. The playground with all the climbing ropes looks cool too. So I fear I might be back with the kids to disturb the peace! Smile

And I'm impressed @WaxOnFeckOff, 12 pints is usually a week for us. Bit less now since the kids demand hot chocolate and DH and I drink endless cups of coffee all at home.

There are only the 3 of us at the moment and I barely drink any, occasional bowl of cereal, don't drink tea or coffee, I do use some for cooking e.g. mashed potato or macaroni cheese etc. It's DH mainly and then DS1 with shakes , it's worse when we have DS2 at home. I have 6 4 pint cartons in the fridge but we will need more midweek.

I tried to be supportive to the milk delivery service but i just couldn't afford it and they also only deliver once a week and I don't have enough space in my fridge.

Grin OMG! That sounds like a truly hellish end of the journey. Not really what you want to be dealing with at that point! Hope you weren't questioned about the contents Smile

callisto yes, the rope park is great. Has caused lots of heart in mouth moments, as DS seems to have no fear. Me, on the other hand, not so much.

No questions, but this was just after the shoe bomber so there were no bins. Eventually the folk in customs felt sorry for us and offered us a bin after we were telling our tale of woe but if you've ever been to the states you'll understand that the security staff are very straight faced and a bit scary so an eyebrow was raised a bin proffered but no smile or change in stare...

we then had another internal flight which was fine, but on the way back there was fog in Newark, we nearly missed the flight as our 1st flight was delayed, got sped through the airport on one of those buggies, late at night by this point with 2 tired toddlers. Got on the plane last 2 seats together near the front and 2 single seats on different rows at the back. Air hostesses couldn't see any issue with leaving a 2 year old on their own with strangers on an overnight international flight. After we took off with DS screaming his head off 3 rows in front of me, the guys behind and around me who were a golfing group who'd been added to the flight after being delayed from the night before and having spent the day dinking in the airport, rearranged themselves so that we could sit together. Nightmare.

Had a fab holiday in New England visiting relatives though, thoroughly recommend it. We had a few days in Boston which is a great city even with kids.

I’ve had golden syrup ice ice cream. Homemade by DP who brought it over for us 😍😍

OOh that sounds fab, golden syrup and ice cream and words that separate or together cannot help but bring a bit of sunshine.

I know! I think I’ll keep him 😃

I am loving these nightmare travel stories!

I tested positive for bomb-making equipment (glycerin) on one attempt to leave the States. I was frogmarched shoeless to a separate area and left DH with a double buggy, a 2 year old, a vomiting 4 month old and about 50 carry on bags... we were travelling with family and they had all gone through and had no idea what had happened to us. The security staff didn't care one jot that we were about to miss our flight or that I was separated from my (screaming) baby... They kept me there for ages testing and retesting and had to wait for an expert to come in to look at the sample. They said they wouldn't hold the plane or refund us (3 x business class tickets) and it was a night flight so this was all about 10pm.

I'm coming out in a cold sweat thinking back to that... I'd already had the 4 month old at the local hospital (which we had to pay cash for) and spent 2 weeks with my in-laws, I just wanted to GO HOME.

PS I was not trying to bomb the plane - have no clue where the trace came from!

StopTouchingYourFairyGarden · 13/02/2021 20:50

Home made golden syrup ice cream? Where? How? I NEED

shouldistop · 13/02/2021 20:53

My dh is of Middle Eastern descent, we went to America in 2019. Customs and immigration were lots of fun... we were quite clearly on a 'to be watched' list.

shouldistop · 13/02/2021 20:54

@StopTouchingYourFairyGarden urgh that sounds horrendous.

WouldBeGood · 13/02/2021 20:55

Two years ago we flew Norwegian air from Edinburgh ti Stewart airport near NYC. It was one flight in at a time and staffed by two older women with nice scarves. Amazing

@StopTouchingYourFairyGarden he has an ice cream maker but I shall ask for the recipe

Oh gawd, another USA flight nightmare!

The other thing was having to remove our DCs shoes for the return flights. We'd gone to Freeport while we were in Maine and kitted DC out with state of the art flashy soled lace up trainers (this was 2003 so still quite unusual in the UK). So at first they said they didn't need to remove as they were only little kids and then changed their mind when they saw they were flashy. DH then glaring at my footwear choice as we struggled to race for our flight with carry-ons, sleepy very large toddlers and all our shoes... ah memories....

DS1 also managed to get the whole of Freeport (basically a large outdoor shopping area that is semi rural) on lockdown.

We were in the North Face shop browsing and my SIL was trying on trainers when we realised that DS1 wasn't in view so obvs dropped everything and started shouting on him and frantically looking. 4 adults 2 teenagers and toddler DS2 racing around. Staff clocked on quickly, hit an alarm which locked the doors and radioed to security who then had all the other security lock nearby stores and guarded the car park. Then we found him. sitting in the middle of one of those carousel rack things with clothes on. DS2 was just standing looking at him as he was closer to the ground than we were and Niece bent down to see what he was looking at. Panic over!
