Guilt free railing

The place to vent, moan, rail, cheer: whatever you’re feeling about Covid, and the rules, and life and the universe.

I’ve started this as I’m feeling scared and fed up with increasing restrictions despite vaccines. I feel that what should be a more positive time is instead bringing more and more doom.

I want the simple pleasures of life back, as well as all the big stuff.

My SIL is scottish but has lived all her adult life in the states. her DH is in the military. They were out in Germany for a while and on return she couldn't find her documents that allowed her entry to the states. her DH had to contact some high ranking General (he was pretty high rank himself) who almost had to get permission from the President to stop her being returned to Germany (where she no longer had no right to be either) and sorted her out some new documents.

US security is strict!

NotAnActualSheep · 13/02/2021 21:33

@StopTouchingYourFairyGarden

if you've ever been to the states you'll understand that the security staff are very straight faced and a bit scary so an eyebrow was raised a bin proffered but no smile or change in stare...

I am loving these nightmare travel stories!

I tested positive for bomb-making equipment (glycerin) on one attempt to leave the States. I was frogmarched shoeless to a separate area and left DH with a double buggy, a 2 year old, a vomiting 4 month old and about 50 carry on bags... we were travelling with family and they had all gone through and had no idea what had happened to us. The security staff didn't care one jot that we were about to miss our flight or that I was separated from my (screaming) baby... They kept me there for ages testing and retesting and had to wait for an expert to come in to look at the sample. They said they wouldn't hold the plane or refund us (3 x business class tickets) and it was a night flight so this was all about 10pm.

I'm coming out in a cold sweat thinking back to that... I'd already had the 4 month old at the local hospital (which we had to pay cash for) and spent 2 weeks with my in-laws, I just wanted to GO HOME.

PS I was not trying to bomb the plane - have no clue where the trace came from!

Oh crikey both of you! I have a US passport so the immigration people seem to be much more friendly when I go (not for about 10 years now, though), but I have heard so many horror stories about slightly inflexible immigration officers. DM was held back for a looooong time when she went to the US to marry DF in the mid 70s - she was very Yorkshire, but had been born in an African country that no longer exists, and the immigration folks just couldn't get their head round it and thought she was obviously pulling some kind of scam. DF had to go and rescue her after about 5 hours.

DH still claims being able to go in the citizens queue rather than the alien queue is the main benefit to our marriage. Bastard.

We had to do that mad dash via chauffeured buggies to make a connection once. It was very exciting. I felt like James bond.

Golden syrup ice cream I would Definitely have All The Time for. Yum.

I worked abroad as a nanny in the 80s, I went to the embassy to get a US Visa and admitted I was going to stay a few months with relatives for a holiday, which was true, but I got refused the visa and marched out if the embassy by police with guns. Bit scary at 18!
Then a few years later I was going to stay with a friend for a couple of months in the USA, when I landed I was marched into an office by a customs official who asked what I was doing, where I was staying etc..but my friends mum was working there and when I mentioned her name I was sent through no problem..

WouldBeGood · 13/02/2021 23:18

@ssd that sounds super scary!

TBH I was young and just pissed off I couldn't get a few months holiday.
I ended up applying for just 2 weeks and I got a job to come back to and I was allowed to go for 2 weeks. That was the first time, the second time I was just glad my pals mum worked at immigration.

WouldBeGood · 14/02/2021 10:20

@ssd 😃

I remember going to Grosvenor square to get my US visa and being terrified of all the huge guns, I cannot imagine being turfed out of there!

ssd · 14/02/2021 10:30

It was abroad so not here it happened, i dont even think I told my mum and dad...I was only 18, my dcs are older than that, if it happened to them I'd be worried sick...

ssd · 14/02/2021 10:30

The innocence of youth Grin

WouldBeGood · 14/02/2021 10:57

That’s true about youth @ssd! I’d probably have been blasé then too, and freaked now.

Right, must psyche myself up for a “run” in my garage. Trying to avoid becoming a Covid victim because of obesity 😳

rookiemere · 14/02/2021 10:59

@WouldBeGood ah your running machine has arrived enjoy ! I was really hoping for an outdoor run today - new M&s leggings - but had to retreat to the garage when I skidded on a sliver of ice on the doorstep.
Needed to burn calories for our posh lunch, now should I do traditional fish or deep fried scallops. Don't say both as we're on a budget Grin!

anon444877 · 14/02/2021 11:03

Sometimes there's a benefit to not understanding the full range of consequences when you're young. I'm contemplating whether it's safe enough underfoot to put the bins out.

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/02/2021 11:38

See, you'd never have worried about that when you were young. 😂

anon444877 · 14/02/2021 11:49

Quite! Ah to be 18 again. I fancy fish and chips for dinner now!

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/02/2021 12:26

Is it bad that I was just thinking that it would be worth trotting over the magic border to England-shire in the hope of being detained in a covid hotel for 10 days as at least it would be a holiday in an actual hotel with room service? Something that we may not see otherwise? Just hope to get a room with a view and a handsome security escort for my daily fresh air.

On the other hand I could just try to get locked up in jail for a couple of weeks, less comfy beds and I suspect not as good food but it would be free of charge.

littlbrowndog · 14/02/2021 12:38

Jeez no wax.

It’s dead expensive for a room with a view

Maybe we could do house swaps ?

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/02/2021 12:41

Now there is something that hasn't been banned! What a fab idea @littlbrowndog

I'd need some serious clearing out in mine though.

shouldistop · 14/02/2021 12:49

Excitement for this morning was trudging round the waterworks with 4yo, ddog and pram. Fed up with the freezing cold wind and the mud.
I just want to go swimming or to soft play, is that too much to ask??? Sad
We've just had lunch, cranked the heating up, baby ds is napping (thank fuck!) and I'm going to have a cup of tea and ponder how long I can reasonably let ds1 watch tv for.

littlbrowndog · 14/02/2021 12:54

I know it’s grim shouldistop

Don’t worry wax we live in proud chaos.

Completely stopped caring.

Like a pack of ferals and that includes the cat

StopTouchingYourFairyGarden · 14/02/2021 12:58

I found 16 hours a day just a bit too much for my DC, so we've cut down to 12 hours a day. It's important to mix activities so we intersperse TV with the Wii and YouTube....

Every day I wake up and think we'll do crafts and learning challenges and decluttering and DIY and lego and reading for hours, and yet every single day... Netflix. Blush

anon444877 · 14/02/2021 13:01

I prefer to count the brag worthy mum activities instead - ooooh look we played a board game once this week. Snow dog making, 1 hour. Dressed before 2pm at least 3 days this week.

It's more rewarding :)

WouldBeGood · 14/02/2021 13:07

@rookiemere yes! I got a second hand one on Facebook for £150 and it’s a really proper one. No excuses now.

Though I thought I’d been so heavy and lumpen I’d caused it to combust earlier, but turned out DS had got bread stuck in the toaster 😂

A house swap would be good abd perfect timing for me as I’ve just had a massive clear out

Is that you offering to swap houses and come and clear mine out? I guess it would get round the issues of laziness on my part and also the emotional attachment to my shite element.

In other news, DS1 just been called for jury duty, he's a student and has classes on plus it's in another council area, what do you think the chances of him getting an exemption are? Apart from all that, he is also very anxious (but not formally diagnosed) and whilst I think it might not be bad for him to be pushed out his comfort zone, he obviously doesn't want to go.
