I was reading this morning that some scientist was saying no mass events for years. Well that's it for the entertainment industry. No festivals, live gigs, weddings, even a lot of theatre. If a lot of these things disappear, they won't return.

Hopefully not true.

rogueantimatter · 08/02/2021 10:18

I think he said no unregulated mass events. Regulations could be having negative lateral flow tests before for very large events? Vaccinations?

WouldBeGood · 08/02/2021 10:23

I just don’t think people will put up with no events once the vaccinations happen

Lockdownbear · 08/02/2021 10:29

Surely that depends on what's considered a 'mass' event, do they mean 100 people or 50,000 people.

Things like a hotel wedding with 100 people and proper toilets are still miles away from 20,000 on Princess St for the bells with portaloos.

Also what do they mean by unregulated, do they mean regulation will be required like contact details given for TnT as your enter the night clubs?

titsbumfannythelot · 08/02/2021 10:29

I think they will run drop in clinics for the vaccination for 50 and under. I imagine most people will be allowed to take time off work to be vaccinated.

I'll be first in the queue when it's my turn and I know most folk will be the same.

Lockdownbear · 08/02/2021 10:32

The issue with drop in clinics without appointments is they then can't control the flow of people for either Social Distancing or stopping the nurses waiting around for people to turn up when they've finished work.

Morning all. Brew

Love your future rhymes Lockdownbear.

Tuppence worth on the vaccine progress. The 65+ age group is about 1m Scots so once we reach 1.5m (to cover healthcare and vulnerable) I am struggling to understand why BBC stats as fed by ScotGov are so much higher. My estimate is in line with the figure for annual flu vaccines which has the same criteria. We are already at almost 800k and at current rate of 50k a day should be pretty much done in a couple of weeks.

England has already implemented on-line booking for lower age groups. I agree this is likely where we will head.

Following on from the N Zahawi interviews yesterday I found this article interviewing Kate Bingham. If you have a spare half hour it is a really informative read. Quite a lot of hints from both that we are indeed moving towards an annual booster strategy along the same lines as the flu. I wonder if all the noise about AZ efficacy re the SA strain is so they can nudge opinion towards waiting for an updated booster in late Autumn rather than sticking to the 12 week booster plan.

If you have DC with aspirations to work in the financial sector it is a very good "insider" read.

Dinnafashyersel · 08/02/2021 10:46

The elephant in the room on banning official events is the same one Andy B pointed out yesterday. Unofficial events are impossible to regulate. Glastonbury started off as a casual hippy get together. It only started commercially charging in order to pay for the crowd safety and to limit numbers.

Police locally are already having problems managing large groups meeting up in our surrounding countryside. This is during lockdown with travel restrictions. I wouldn't rate their chances once people start to decide it's time for normality.

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 08/02/2021 11:08

I said that a few months ago, after that illegal house party in Lothian - the one with 300 odd folk there. There's no regulation in terms of bouncers, bag searches, etc. At least in nightclubs and gigs there are restrictions. People will gather and party anyway.

blowinahoolie · 08/02/2021 11:31

DM had her vaccine this morning. No idea which one it was though.

goodname · 08/02/2021 11:41

Ah Monday homeschooling 😱. Personally I think everyone with kids will be lining up to get vaccinated as soon as possible just so they can have an excuse for a day off from homeschooling

TheMShip · 08/02/2021 11:42

Through the grapevine at my employer (university), they are planning vaccination clinics for staff 18-49 (and 50+ who missed for whatever reason) at big sites around campus this summer, and for incoming students at the start of fall term. No word on drop in vs appointment but suspect the latter for reasons given by posters above.

Lockdownbear · 08/02/2021 11:49

You could be on to something there.

Re events - something that crossed my mind earlier, how do you police mass protests?
Any yes if people can't access organized safe events they will eventually go the unsafe route.

Incidentally I heard a tale that SG were concerned about the amount of booze being sold in supermarkets so are looking at limiting package sizes and raising minimum prices.
They really do need to remember that the majority of the population are within an 2hours of the English border. If English people were happy to do the French Booze Cruz people in Scotland will be equally as happy to jont down the M74.

StatisticallyChallenged · 08/02/2021 11:53

Christ, I'm teetotal with a family history of alcoholism and even I think they're getting silly with the booze rules.

Most folk also live near multiple shops, and supermarkets have many many checkouts. If folk want lots of booze they'll just go in and out/visit multiple shops. And yes, hop the border if the price goes too high.

jabbathebutt · 08/02/2021 11:54

That's what I suspected universities would do because otherwise september would just be the same as last year.

I wonder if all those students having parties realise their fines etc might come back to bite them when they do background checks for future jobs?

jabbathebutt · 08/02/2021 11:57

where did you hear that about booze buying @Lockdownbear

@StatisticallyChallenged I'm teetotal for the exact same reasons. DF has an alcohol problem but would totally deny it. In fact, we aren't talking right now because I had a go at him about it and he's been stocking up too much on supermarket beer and poor DM getting the effects of that Sad hence why I'd like to know more about any booze buying restrictions!

WaxOnFeckOff · 08/02/2021 11:59

BBC article on house parties/breaches:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-55932645

WaxOnFeckOff · 08/02/2021 12:01

I don't drink much for similar reasons above but I'm a grown adult and if I fancy buying a crate of beer or cider or stocking up on wine then I will.

Groovee · 08/02/2021 12:06

I'm teetotal too. I can't see why we can't have drinks with a meal etc.

Dh is having a more thorough endoscopy on Friday. 7.30am drop off.

Lockdownbear · 08/02/2021 12:07

It was from a friend who works with one of the big supermarkets.
Apparently their concerns have increased during the lockdowns (no surprise really). People are using alcohol to manage MH and the lockdown blues.

Scottishskifun · 08/02/2021 12:09

When I was at uni they had to do a mass measles vaccination due to an outbreak.

It was both drop in and appointment - 20 students at a time were given the same appointment you arrived sat on a chair confirmed name and date of birth then got a jab and sat for 5 mins on your chair then left. 5 min later next group came in. Worked pretty well!

anon444877 · 08/02/2021 12:24

Yes I've already said to dh I'm treating myself to a stint of sobriety post lockdown like last time as even if you've no problems with regulating booze it's been something to do to pass the time at home so I'm sure a lot of consumption increases.

Is it Monday again? I've bought an indoor pogo stick to keep them entertained this week.

anon444877 · 08/02/2021 12:25

Mind you, lock down has had a funny effect on my kids - they're currently making themselves sardine and cucumber sandwiches! Waiting to see if they eat them.

rookiemere · 08/02/2021 12:27

If they cut down how much alcohol people can buy from one supermarket, people will simply go to multiple shops. It's not that hard to figure out, and maybe wait until people have a few more coping strategies back in their lives like going to someone's home, or an actual live AA meeting. Maybe focus on getting us all vaccinated as the key priority for now. Honestly it's not that hard to understand FFS.

Dinnafashyersel · 08/02/2021 12:38

NS confirming on target to vaccinate all 70+ and clinically vulnerable by mid Feb which is in line with my pp.

Otoh I do know people who get called for a flu vax who haven't been contacted yet and mid Feb is next weekend.
