My DMIL (71, central Edin) got hers this week

anon444877 · 06/02/2021 13:59

I've never seen our local parks so busy or full of what I hope was dog poo either dinna. Fingers crossed we can go somewhere, anywhere by Easter!

jerometheturnipking · 06/02/2021 14:01

My MIL (65, not CEV) has her appointment through for next week 🎉 it feels like progress.

Scottishskifun · 06/02/2021 14:08

I hope they don't restrict England/Scotland too long my DS has now been restricted in seeing his grandparents for half his life he absolutely loves spending time with them and he really helps with FIL mental health (recovering from cancer)

Dinnafashyersel · 06/02/2021 14:11

Re The Guardian Article. The Royal College of Paediatricians have issued a clarification as they had to do to get a correction out of BBC radio last time round.

For context the Sick Kids in Glasgow has a bed capacity of over 250. That is 250 children in hospital week in and week out in Glasgow alone. 100 of the UK children's hospital capacity testing positive for Covid in a week is smaller than I would have expected.

Also worth pointing out, since MSM never does, that Covid positive hospital patients in England have fallen from 34k to 24k in less than 2 weeks (quoting England rather than UK as there are lots of timing artefacts in the other Nation numbers due to collation lumpiness).

kurtrussellsbeard · 06/02/2021 14:20

This is 100 with post covid complications. Usually a month or so down the line. They don't actually have covid at the point of admission. I eventually did click in and read the article. It wasn't as terrifying as they made out. Still not ideal though and BAME kids account for 75% of year admissions which is just awful.

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 06/02/2021 14:29

I'd love to get back abroad on holiday (have not been more than about 10 miles out of Glasgow since March last year!) but will be really pissed off if others bugger off on holiday before it's allowed and bring back foreign variants which send us back to square 1.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 06/02/2021 14:43

I agree with Statistically :
"It seems somewhat hypocritical to have a situation where children are unable to attend school largely to protect others, but those who they were at home to protect will be able to go on holiday while the children are still at home? Even if vaccinated you can still spread it so it feels a bit "I'm alright Jack" to me".

StarryEyeSurprise · 06/02/2021 14:44

Same here. A holiday abroad would be amazing but actually being able to be inside with my parents and not have the fear of passing on covid/ potentially killing them would feel like a lottery win tbh.

kurtrussellsbeard · 06/02/2021 14:45

I've lost my parents already but that would be a lottery win. Sounds wonderful @StarryEyeSurprise. Enjoy every second when you can.

StarryEyeSurprise · 06/02/2021 14:50

It's like the people 'working' in Dubai or Mexico for example. Of course, they're just on holiday. I know someone there just now- for 6 weeks. Said they're there 'on business' so was allowed. They haven't put up as many insta stories as they normally would but have done some. Sometimes I think, fair play- enjoy yourself. Other times I think, it was morally quite wrong to jet out on holiday in January.

StarryEyeSurprise · 06/02/2021 14:54

I'm sorry Kurt and thank you. I probably should remember that more - that other can't see theirs permanently and I am lucky in that respect.
kurtrussellsbeard · 06/02/2021 14:57

Oh God it wasn't a dig! Sorry if it came across like that. I mean it genuinely. Enjoy it. It's horrid to be apart from your family. In some ways I've been grateful not to have to deal with that. Not being able to visit them in hospital for example when terminal would have been too much to bear!

jabbathebutt · 06/02/2021 14:59

its fucking baltic so I wouldnt want to go out anyway. Think we're the only part of Scotland that's no had snow. We keep getting snow warnings from the council but BBC weather says we aren't going to get any.

StarryEyeSurprise · 06/02/2021 15:03

No I know, and I didn't take it that way at all. I just meant I'm sorry they're not around ( I know you have young children). Thank you- it's kind of you to wish me well.

I just saw your thread re Edward saving the union. It made me lol- there's a story about 'supertato' . Don't know if you know it but I as soon as I saw your thread, I thought they may aswell send a potato to save the union, for all the impact Edward will have! 🤣

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/02/2021 15:07

I don't have my parents and some siblings/brother in laws, but I don't begrudge anyone else theirs. At least it's been once less worry.

I do miss my wider family and friends, my DS has a girlfriend he met whilst away at uni and they've been together for 16 months but I've only met her about 3 times. It feels strange that he has someone so important in his life and I don't really know them.

I miss my friends too.

StarryEyeSurprise · 06/02/2021 15:18

I've just been reading that the second dose was what impacted the cases in Israel. Ugh. Was in the daily fail but I still have a niggling feeling that the strategy of giving the two doses outwith the recommended time is going to come back and bite us on the bahookie.

Dinnafashyersel · 06/02/2021 15:21

Yep Kurt the RCPH were quoting a rate of 1 in 5,000 for this. That would mean if every child in school in Scotland (roughly 650k) caught Covid it could lead to 130 hospitalisations spread throughout a year. Thereafter it would be about 10 per year for each new cohort. It is highly likely that most of these cases would have identifiable risk factors. I completely agree with Jeremy Hunt's thinking about protecting "at elevated risk" children and looking at vaccination options for them.

However this is not the same as regarding all children as being at life threatening risk.

Just been looking to get some comparative stats on glandular fever without much success. I think rate of complications is much higher from personal experience. More concerning is that there evidence of reduced incidence of asymptomatic infection in infancy resulting in increased incidence of severe infection in later life. This is a pattern with lots of infections and was one of the reasons polio became an issue once the developed World cleaned up. There are risks to cotton wooling children against all infection which used to be well understood but seem to be being sidelined atm.

(one of the reasons it took so long to sort out my DD1's health issues was that her symptoms mimiced post glandular fever infection and she had been in contact with a severe case. She tested positive for antibodies so it's good to know at least she's got that one out the way).

We don't have any either. The kids are disappointed and keep watching the forecast hopefully.

Really want to see my mum. It's nearly the 1st anniversary of her mum's death and the 3rd anniversary of my dad's (they died 2 years and a day apart) and she's struggling.

rookiemere · 06/02/2021 15:28

I've more or less written off foreign holidays for this year as feel there will be too much caveating and cost around them with potential covid tests at either end and then quarantining.

I do think that we need to stop as much foreign travel as possible until the adult population is vaccinated, simply to avoid any new mutant strains spoiling the good work.

Once we're all vaccinated then presumably we'll be in a much stronger position. Last year they let foreign travel go ahead as there was simply no end point to this, now that it is and it's in sight, makes sense to wait for it.

I do hope though we can go to England soon, DS is an only and those family ties are important. If they open English accommodation before Scotland we might just take our chances at the border. Also was saying to DH that Edinburgh numbers are now so low and as DS hasn't been in school all year, might take a visit up to DPs in Perth even though they've not had their third vaccine yet as chances of us having covid and passing it on are currently minuscule.

fluffyugg · 06/02/2021 15:31

@StarryEyeSurprise but it was reported this week that just one dose of the AZ vaccine may cut transmission by 2/3

Dinnafashyersel · 06/02/2021 15:31

Not bad here today. Bracing fresh air as my Gran would have put it before chucking us out for some healthy garden clear up or somesuch.

On the upside loads of staff at our local walk in test centre but no customers. On the downside loads of staff also at the vaccine centre down the road and no customers. (no wonder they can't afford to pay the doctors to get on with doing the actual vaxs as opposed to manning the empty doorways).

Scottishskifun · 06/02/2021 15:37

We want to book a holiday for June we have a campervan which makes life easier but wanted to go to the islands and I have no idea if the ferries will even let us on!

Dinnafashyersel · 06/02/2021 15:39

Difficult to conclude anything on 1 vs 2 dose strategy from Israeli data. Coverage builds to 21 days after 1 dose anyway and 2nd doses were done within this timeframe (their data is all Pfizer and at present heavily weighted to older age groups where efficacy could be comparatively lower).

I had a look at the Murdoch tweet thread. I have lots of questions. The oddest thing is that incidence in the under 60s is falling according to his graphs but hospitalisations are not where they are both tracking down in the older cohort. Looks like a measurement issue unless something even more concerning is going on.

LetItGoGo · 06/02/2021 16:07

Sorry if this has already been pointed out.

I just read on a Scotgov site that Jeane Freeman has said if you are 80+ and haven't been contacted re vaccine please contact your GP surgery.

Just in case anyone's relative is hanging on, waiting.
