SNP hates women

ASmallMovie · 01/02/2021 19:11

In the last 24 hours, Joanna Cherry has been sacked from the front-bench and measures have been introduced to make it impossible for Joan McAlpine to be re-elected. Both these women are feminists and vocal campaigners for the protection of the hard-won sex-based rights of women and children. Nothing they have said or written is transphobic.

Also, Humza Yousef has bowed to pressure and decided not to proceed with an amendment which would protect people who are fighting for girls and women's rights.

I have lost all respect for Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP. Was planning to vote for them in May, but now find that impossible.
This is a depressing, shameful state of affairs.

If you are interested in reading more, this is a great thread -

There are some excellently articulate posters in the feminist section who are discussing this very issue. It’s quite scary stuff that’s happening here in Scotland.

HappyPumpkin81 · 02/02/2021 19:07

I read an article once on why there had not been another female prime minister since Margaret Thatcher (pre Theresa May). One of the things that stood out for me was that apparently rather than woman in power raising up other woman, the majority actively seek to put them down to prevent competition. Having had female managers I tend to agree with this.

2typesofjungle · 02/02/2021 19:11

Do you have Link to an article that explains the whole situation? I've been trying to catch up on this today (having essentially ignored the news for the last few months) and I'm struggling to find out the full picture.
You've explained it well, but I'm feeling a little lost.

ssd · 02/02/2021 19:12

Awful. And scary.

ASmallMovie · 02/02/2021 19:18

@Selkiesarereal

Yes, I'm following all the threads in the fantastic feminist section, but I feel like this needs a wider audience in Scotland...

A lot of my (female) friends think NS is fabulous and wonderful role-model for girls. She is a great communicator and, to be honest, I did admire her, and was on her side, so to speak, with the Salmond affair.

But have lost all respect in the last few days over her unwillingness to speak out for the rights of women and girls. It's just so dispiriting. God knows who I'll vote for in May.

@2typesofjungle

Sorry I can't find one article covering everything. But there are 3 links below which are insightful. The feminist section on here is also brilliant at the moment, discussing all this. I also read the twitter feed of 'forwomenscotland", who are putting up a brilliant fight.

Whilst I was never a fan of her politics I did previously admire her but over the past year I have gone from disappointment to horror at what she’s doing in particular to women.

However there are a number of people who only care about independence/or think that we are old transphobes.

2typesofjungle · 02/02/2021 19:35

Thank you @ASmallMovie I'll get reading now. I read one of the threads on the feminism board but I felt a bit like I was listening in on a conversation by people much more knowledgeable than me and I couldn't keep up! It's awful, I feel like this is so important, got to get my brain in gear!

Selkiesarereal · 02/02/2021 19:40

@2typesofjungle I know what you mean and I felt the same but there are some fantastic posters over there. I rarely post as they are so articulate but I do watch and listen and once you begin to really read into this stuff the worse it gets.

ASmallMovie · 02/02/2021 19:43

@Selkiesarereal
I became a reluctant 'Yes' (for Indy) after the Brexit shitshow and the implosion of Labour. But her attitude towards women is awful and I genuinely have no idea who to vote for in May.

@2typesofjungle

Alex Massie in The Times / Sunday Times has also written a couple of great pieces over the last couple of days.

I'm afraid I don't have share tokens but I think they were shared on the feminist boards.

He had a great piece in on Sunday and another one yesterday. Well worth a read if you can find the links.

I completely agree - on the feminist boards I feel like I'm listening in to a conversation between very articulate and intelligent women. Have learned so much from reading those boards.

I've never read the feminist boards, can anyone point out where to start?

This is exactly the position I find myself in.

ASmallMovie · 02/02/2021 20:53

@ssd

These are two threads from the feminism chat boards about the situation in the SNP. But, honestly, what an education I've had hanging about over there...

Hopefully this will work -

A really good articles from Alex Massie, and reassuring to note that most of the comments are full of common sense.

WouldBeGood · 03/02/2021 23:21

It’s just awful. It’s now seeming a concerted campaign against women. I’m very worried about it

LexMitior · 04/02/2021 10:14

If you are worried about this and the Hate Crime Bill generally then you should look at the position in England and Wales. It is directly opposite to Scotland. Legislatively, Scotland is carving a very different path. Socially it will by design be different from its closest neighbours who are backing away from ill thought stuff like this on a policy level, let alone making a law.

Independence shouldn’t be perverse - progressive values that destroy women’s sex based rights advanced because the perceived idea is you are more liberal than the English in doing so.

WouldBeGood · 04/02/2021 10:29

I saw it referred to on here somewhere as the Woke Republic of Scotland, (sorry, can’t reminder who coined it!) which is not somewhere I want to live.

cdtaylornats · 04/02/2021 10:31

I became a reluctant 'Yes' (for Indy) after the Brexit shitshow

And you thought being entirely alone would help?

Separation after Brexit is a bit like jumping off a cliff and stabbing yourself on the way down to make sure.

After the way the EU has been acting why would you ever admit you wanted to be in a relationship with them.

PinkyParrot · 06/02/2021 07:02

Seems everyone's protected except women. Ridiculous.

Greenevalley · 06/02/2021 07:12

My dsis lives in Scotland.
She's always banging on about how marvellous Nicola Sturgeon is.
I don't know much about Scottish politics but stands to reason they will be power plays just like any other country.

Sexnotgender · 07/02/2021 19:03

I absolutely despise Nicola Sturgeon, she’s no friend to women.

WaxOnFeckOff · 07/02/2021 19:16

It comes to something when Jacob RM is an ally to women in Scotland - between that and Wings over Scotland making sense we are living in strange times - ignore the title on this, it's more about Joanna Cherry than anything else.
