Scotsnet does not represent Scotland

At a time when polls are showing unprecedented support for independence and even John Curtice agrees the polls are clear, why is Scotsnet such a bastion of unionist opinions? Is it just due to the demographic of Mumsnet? Why has this site become such a right wing enclave?

Well not liking the SNP doesn't mean you are right wing. Most people here are left of centre, they just don't like the SNP, they may not all even be against independence. No one is stopping anyone who supports independence or the SNP from posting so not sure if that's demographics or not.

Bloodypunkrockers · 25/01/2021 21:56

I'm not right wing

I can't stand the SNP. My MP is a dick of the highest order. My MSP does nothing

I don't know if I'm a typical Mumsnetter and I'm not sure I care

MorrisZapp · 25/01/2021 22:03

Oh god this old chestnut. If you don't want independence you must be a Toarie. If that's the case then in the privacy of the ballot booth, why does Scotland vote overwhelmingly for non right wing parties?

smoothchange · 25/01/2021 22:05

Hmm, that's not how I read it. As posters above, I'm no Tory, nor a fan of the SNP.

BaseDrops · 25/01/2021 22:06

This. Perhaps you aren’t exposed to a wider mix of views in your day to day life.
Wbeezer · 25/01/2021 22:07

Back off with the right wing, I've never voted right of centre in my life! It's total misinformation branding anyone who is wary of independence right wing, there are some but i dont think Mumsnet is where they hang out. Next you'll be saying you're not really Scottish if you don't want immediate independence.
Personally I've always wanted more devolved powers but I'm never offered that.
I'm very patriotic but I'm not into "the tyranny of small differences"

ssd · 25/01/2021 22:08

I kind of know what you mean. I feel quite liking Nicola sturgeon is poo pooed on mn. I know she has done a lot wrong, but I still feel she cares. Maybe I'm deluded, I dont know anymore.
Anyhoo it is what it is.
I'm glaswegian and pro independence and sometimes feel in the minority. But I still like reading others opinions, its interesting and broadens my mind.
But sometimes I dont join in.

Terracottasaur · 25/01/2021 22:10

Being anti independence is not the same as being right wing. That said, I do think MN is pretty right wing generally.

EachDubh · 25/01/2021 22:11

Many support independence but do not support the SNP as is now.
Not everyone will agree with the direction Scotland should go in and that is good, it means politicians and parties are challenged and can't just ride rough shod over the general population. I want a Scotland made up of many parties and beliefs, I want people to challenge things not just nod and agree.

Wbeezer · 25/01/2021 22:14

My SNP is a dick too @Bloodypunkrockers I wonder if they are the same one. My MSP is decent.
This is reminding me of the feminist board being accused of being right wing because they are gender critical.
Such a fundamental lack of understanding of others viewpoint and lack of willingness to even try to understand.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 25/01/2021 22:19

I remember being called a Tory cunt when I was canvassing for the No vote in the referendum, which is odd because when I was growing up the SNPs were known as the Tartan Tories because the voted with the Tory party to bring down the govt of the day and usher in Thatcher's prime ministership.

Funny how things change.

Scottishskifun · 25/01/2021 22:19

I'm definitely not right wing I vote Lib dems!
I don't think independence is right though in a pandemic and see no way for it to be paid for! Can't be based on oil industry taxes that's bottomed out, EU has said no fast track back in. Things need to be a lot more stable and when the economy is on its knees its not the right time!

Wbeezer · 25/01/2021 22:20

I remember the Tartan Tory tag too!

I see the opposite when I look in places outside Scotsnet. Not much slagging off the tories here to be fair as they aren't in power in Scotland and are currently a bit of a non entity so nothing really to say.

SNP are the party in power and as such should be facing constant challenge. They have been in charge of the stuff that matters to/affects most people for over a decade. What I find more bizarre is people who defend every move they make even when they are patently in the wrong, not sure how that is even possible, to believe absolutely in every single thing. I also note that when asked about positive things, they generally return to saying that we are doing better than rUK.

Would I ever vote Tory? Wouldn't be top of my list but if it came to that in terms of a tactical vote to remove a SNP candidate then yes, probably. I sit left of centre but without some of the woke shite.

LetItGoGo · 25/01/2021 22:23

ssd I can relate to NS and think yes she cares.

Anyway the question this post left me with was what's OP's issue with Prof John Curtice?

i've got an saved article about that - it's not a link though.
Nighthawker · 25/01/2021 22:28

I'm definitely not unionist and have voted for the SNP consistently for years now but I'm starting to have mixed feelings about them thanks to the recent antics of Salmond and Sturgeon and I fear the party is not going to come out of it looking good.

OOAOML · 25/01/2021 22:28

The most active threads all seem to be about coronavirus and they're (or were last time I looked, I gave up contributing then reading) generally anti-SNP voices.

I was unionist in 2014 (would vote for independence now) and remember quite a balance of views (although we didn't have Scotsnet then). Don't know if some people are not reading any more, not engaging, or changed their minds.

kamalasshaman · 25/01/2021 22:28

@LetItGoGo John Curtice isn't a supporter of independence so one of the pundits that can generally be seen as unbiased

OP posts:
LetItGoGo · 25/01/2021 22:30

Do you mean biased?

kamalasshaman · 25/01/2021 22:33

He doesn't have an SNP bias so can't be accused of massaging the figures to support independence.

LetItGoGo · 25/01/2021 22:33

Okay, thanks.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 25/01/2021 22:34

Ah, there's that false dichotomy between supporting independence and being right wing again. I've always thought Mumsnet in general was more left wing than 'real life' but I guess it maybe depends on who you come into contact with. Most on here are definitely towards the left of centre, but many also just happen to think that the SNP are a bit shit and/or independence isn't a great idea (especially in the midst of a pandemic when we seem to be struggling to get vaccine out to people). I'm sure even the most ardent independence supporter has to concede that this whole Salmond affair is looking like there's some corruption in the mix too?

kurtrussellsbeard · 25/01/2021 22:36

I think it represents sections of Scotland but it's a bit of an echo chamber. There are a handful of posters who set the tone across Scotsnet and they can get a bit accusey and abusey if you don't hate Nicola sturgeon or the snp 🤷🏻‍♀️

kamalasshaman · 25/01/2021 22:38

It's quite right wing on lots of the threads. Generally the SNP and Greens are centre left. Lib Dems are centre right and labour to the right of them. The Scottish tories Angry
