Just that really

What do you think might be a realistic re-opening date.
Am I being optimistic thinking after the February break
I know no one has a crystal ball just looking for people's thoughts

After Easter. And that's me being optimistic!

I would rather it was much sooner, but considering it was 5 months last time...

DrRamsesEmerson · 06/01/2021 21:23

I’m afraid I agree after Easter is the earliest likely. September if the government fuck up the vaccine distribution. It’s outrageous and unjustified, but if Johnson and his merry men cared about education Williamson wouldn’t still be in a job.

chocolateanyone · 06/01/2021 21:24

Yep after easter unfortunately

kurtrussellsbeard · 06/01/2021 21:25

Easter and I honestly think that all students will need to repeat a year. Just can't see how teachers can properly estimate in these circumstances.

RosesAndHellebores · 06/01/2021 21:28

Depends on the vaccine. And we need to get the teachers vaccinated. That will help hugely. Needs to be announced immediately. I am 60 and will wait longer to allow that.

Outsidemum1 · 06/01/2021 21:36

Does the vaccine stop transmission?

RaininSummer · 06/01/2021 21:37

Probably after Easter.

sweetkitty · 06/01/2021 21:52

After Easter is the general consensus being banded about just now.

Dreading it.

LoopyGremlin · 06/01/2021 21:54

If it is after Easter then there’s no way I could fairly estimate grades for my SQA pupils. Sad

frasersmummy · 06/01/2021 21:57

ugghh I didnt expect so many people to predict Easter

I have no idea how the kids will be graded if this pans out to be the case .. what a nightmare

Someone on here reassured me by saying the election is in may so hopefully before then! But that was before the latest announcements. It won’t be before half term, maybe blended learning or just certain primary years back? High schools maybe after Easter?

Indoctro · 06/01/2021 22:09

End of March at the earliest

latortugafeliz · 06/01/2021 22:39

Do we think nurseries/primary might be back any earlier, or is likely they'll keep everything the same despite seemingly different levels of risk?

DollyMixtureLulus · 06/01/2021 22:41

I'm deluded and/or optimistic...

I think we'll go back to tiers. Some areas will open fully, others maybe blended between the Feb half term and the Easter holidays.

Bytheloch · 06/01/2021 23:05

Yes, I agree with Dolly I think we’ll be allocated tiers at end of Feb, those in highest will have schools still shut. Lower I think nurseries and primaries will go back, high school staggered/blended.

iquitelikenormalityafterall · 06/01/2021 23:07

I thought they might get primary years back sooner than high schools, based on what’s been said about risk, but the zero covid thing seems to be getting banded about again, which makes me doubt before the summer holidays! Hoping the election will make them more keen to get pupils back in school.

iquitelikenormalityafterall · 06/01/2021 23:08

Thing with tiers was they changed so much, that would be very disruptive to schools? Opening and shutting week by week...

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 06/01/2021 23:08

I think Easter for secondaries, they might let primaries/nurseries back after Feb half term if there's enough movement in the numbers but I wouldn't bet my life on it. I do think they'll be back before the May election - too many votes on the line for them not to.

Nonamesavail · 06/01/2021 23:09

Honestly? SEPTEMBER!

frasersmummy · 06/01/2021 23:14

@nonamesavail
We are talking scottish schools here so definetly.wont be as late as Sept
And I don't thunk they could run the election with the schools shut
I think that would be Political suicide

OP posts:
Gobbolinothewitchscat · 06/01/2021 23:16

September - sorry

Callisto1 · 06/01/2021 23:26

It's hard to speculate because the Covid numbers over Christmas and New Year are probably not as reliable as other times. I think in a week or so we will see more clearly how bad it really is.

Also not sure the tiers system is going to work so well with a more transmissible strain as mainland Scotland is small and people move around too much. Even just for work.

I guess they could try blended learning in some places if numbers are lower. But I really would rather not see the kids go to school for a few days and then sent back home because numbers change. I think the chaos of stop start is worse than home learning.

thereplycamefromanchorage · 06/01/2021 23:26

Scotland, so it's not going to be September, new school year starts August. I think it's fear mongering (if that's a phrase) to say after the summer. I guess it's possible, but more likely to be March/after Easter. What this will mean for Highers/ NAT 5s I have no idea.

FancySomeChips · 06/01/2021 23:36

It’s been 2 days.
This is all we know for sure.
The rest we have to take as it happens.
Predictions are useless!

Lockdownbear · 06/01/2021 23:36

I'm thinking after Easter so mid April.

However Nic said over 50s vaccinated by May, Boris said over 70s by mid February. So really they are running to the same time scales.
The over 70s are putting most pressure on NHS, 3 weeks for their immunity to kick in and the pressure should be dropping on NHS. So that takes you to early March.

I'm fingers crossed that works out, with no further delays either mutant strains or delays to the vaccine rollout.

Repeating years involves massive disruption and permanent changes to the whole education system. It makes more sense to employ more teachers, tutors, classroom assistants, to get kids to where they should be.
With some sort of amendment to the exams, slim the curriculum for the Nat 5s and Highers for the next couple of years.
