Just that really

What do you think might be a realistic re-opening date.
Am I being optimistic thinking after the February break
I know no one has a crystal ball just looking for people's thoughts

I can see older kids having time added on to uni courses particularly practical courses but not necessarily a full year maybe an extra semester or work over the summer months to make up lost time.

shouldistop · 11/01/2021 07:10

@MrsAmaretto I think you would be allowed to scatter ashes as it would come under compassionate grounds relating to end of life.

RaspberryCoulis · 11/01/2021 08:10

What @Lockdownbear says is so true. We are on the outskirts of Glasgow and did not enjoy a normal summer. If you look on the travelling tabby local site at the heat map www.travellingtabby.com/scotland-coronavirus-tracker/local it's clear to see that there were several weeks from the end of May through to the end of August where numbers were incredibly low. Nationally, the deaths between June and August were less than 1 person a day.

But still they kept up totally locked up, restricted on where we went and what we did. Massive mistake.

Dinnafashyersel · 11/01/2021 15:15

Yep, also Glasgow outskirts. I used up what "normality" I was afforded on sorting out all the stuff postponed by lockdown and prepping for the inevitability of the next one.

They should just get kids back to school ASAP and try and mitigate any damage. There’s more evidence that kids should be in school, and very little evidence that shutting schools will have any impact on hospitalisations. I get it if they want to assess the risk of the new strain, make sure that there wasn’t going to be huge transmission after Christmas, fine. But if this goes on until Easter then they are really just throwing away children’s education/ future social skills for no reason other than media hysteria.

Totallly agree with this. I know they say they don't KNOW enough about the new strain. But cases in my school were very low. Quite a lot of pupil isolations but that's because for every case it does affect numbers. But no evidence of in school transmission. I don't watch the news much, too depressing. But I am in a strange bubble where I wonder where all these people are getting it from?! Although parks in London very very crowded at the weekend from the pictures I've seen today. So maybe people down south ARE getting it outside if it's that crowded. We've been locked up so long that we just assume up in Scotland that we're not going to get it on our quick trip to the supermarket or daily walk where we see no one.

RaraRachael · 12/01/2021 13:40

JS was saying that primaries could go back earlier than secondaries so I'd hope primaries might be after the February break, although ours is very early this year.
We can't repeat a year as 5.5 year olds would need to stay in nursery for another year and some kids would still be in high school until they were past 19. Plus, there wouldn't be the staff or buildings to accommodate them all.

WouldBeGood · 12/01/2021 14:16

Surely they can all go back when the elderly are vaccinated?

ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas · 12/01/2021 14:21

or daily walk where we see no one
I've had a run at the promenade in Edinburgh this morning, the world and his dog was out there. You don't come that close to others but many of the people there were not in the groups they live with, and walking much closer than 2m apart (it's really hard to manage that!) so transmission could occur between them I suppose.

Lockdownbear · 12/01/2021 15:42

Rara I hope you are right they'd get the primaries back mid Feb.

Lockdownbear · 12/01/2021 15:52

While I get online education is no substitute for a teacher for any age. Primary kids really need support to even access it.

makingitupaswegoon · 12/01/2021 16:31

Not soon enough IMO - day two of home learning and it isn't going well on top of both trying to work and teams issues

Groovee · 12/01/2021 17:21

Was at work today and the general consensus is April.

MrsAmaretto · 12/01/2021 19:51

@shouldistop I’m in a Scottish island and Teir 3 so it’s not an essential reason to travel to a level 4. It’s not like she’s going anywhere. Was bad enough when she was dying and I had to give letters from her GP to be allowed to travel. My siblings live in England and I can guarantee that no one in the small village we’re from want us back spreading germs as we’d all need to do an overnight due to distances travelled. It’s really not worth the risk for anyone.

kurtrussellsbeard · 12/01/2021 21:14

Please let it be tomorrow.

Well my children all did brilliantly on it today. I have 3 children. The youngest needed the most support but was familiar with seesaw form last lockdown. She still needed me to check. The others at highschool just got on with it. My daughter had live sessions practically all day. My son had two. Actually I am very impressed. They are all enjoying it so no issues here. I also wfh and have managed to set them all up and for the most part get on with my work. Its been great tbh.
Fortherosesjoni70 · 12/01/2021 21:34

Teams was working fabulously today too.

I doubt it will happen right now. All the suggestions from those who are working in hospitals is no way.
Lockdownbear · 12/01/2021 22:30

Fortherosesjoni70

How old is your youngest?

Fortherosesjoni70 · 12/01/2021 23:42

My youngest is 9 but still requires support on what to do and where to find things but honestly, she did really well for the last couple of days and completed all her tasks once the initial 'I'm not sure' or ' how do i do' had passed.

Lockdownbear · 13/01/2021 00:40

See that's what I'm thinking even at 9 / 10 they still need support to access online school. Which is ok if you are able but for kids who have younger siblings viving for attention and parents who are working it really isn't easy.

Nonamesavail · 13/01/2021 07:20

I agree September sounds ridiculous, if you look at old threads though there were people saying last January that the UK would never lockdown etc and by march people only expecting schools closed a few weeks....so I just don't know anymore.

Argh! Thats ages Shock Are you in education? Insider knowledge?

Invisimamma · 13/01/2021 12:33

My son is 6 and requires a lot of support to access the online learning and then guide him through his various tasks for the day. Then my 10year old still needs help and for me to check things over and keep him on task (otherwise he'll go o. Youtube) . Amongst all of this I need to feed them 3 meals a day, try to get them outdoors, and do my own job. It doesn't feel humanly possible. Although we are managing much better than the last school closure it is not easy.

I hope they can open in February but I think it will be Easter.

Callisto1 · 13/01/2021 12:35

If it's April I think I might go insane. The school have provided more work and today I realized that the videos they post often require to be stopped and the kids need to write and do maths.

I have a toddler that screams and throws things throughout the video. So I usually take them away to play. But what do I do now?! I tried books, drawing but nothing works. It just ends up in lots of noise and my P2 can't hear the lesson. I guess the only option is screen time so I can do the teaching vids with my P2. DH took over half an hour this morning with just one video, but he can't really help most mornings. I thought the videos would make it easier Sad
