Hogmanay or Ne'er Day?

Sausages or not?

What with it? Mash/chips, roasties and Carrots/peas etc?

And what area of Scotland are you from/living in?

Me: Ne'er day, no sausages, served with Mash, peas and carrots and maybe sprouts if any left, from East coast and now in north central belt.

@WaxOnFeckOff no would definitely go with the Dutch oven! I did a 2kg roast on Christmas Day and still have some in the freezer, I would go for it but be sure to also leave it to rest for 30 mins after cooking.
Forrester was mental. I had a brilliant education there but probably due to some very brilliant teachers rather than the system!!

AgentProvocateur · 30/12/2020 20:54

I’m overseas and you’ve all made me very homesick 😰 No steak pie here, but if I was at home (Glasgow) it would be scotch broth and bacon roll at the bells and steak pie - with pastry only on top - on Ne’er day with mash and peas. No sausage.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2020 20:57

That's the thing about current circumstances. I'm both bored by thinking what to eat, buying food, packing it away, cooking it and even eating it. But, at the same time it's become very important in terms of having things to look forward to and enjoy since going out has rarely been an option.

Was just thinking a chippy might be a nice change for tomorrow but it shuts at 3 so that's out.

@WaxOnFeckOff @AgentProvocateur agree I am getting to very jaded stage with food! I would probably kill to sit on the south bank and eat a wahaca on Hogmanay ... next year .

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2020 21:20

To add to the complication, I've been doing click and collect and the dates are always a bit shit and I don't have a decent sized freezer. So I end up having to chuck a lot of things into one dish so they don't get wasted and then find I'm short on meals for the week. So now I have a pack of pre cooked chicken thighs due to go out of date today (they'll be fine tomorrow) a pack of fresh smoked mackerel due up tomorrow, a couple of packs of ham due up today and some other bits and pieces. Yesterday I had fresh chicken thighs to use up and made them spicy and had in pasta with ham and tomato sauce etc. Didn't want to use the other thighs today as plan to make a curry, boys had to use up some curry ready meals at lunch and we had chicken yesterday. I did a rice dish on Monday with the last of the turkey and some of the ham and chorizo. So now we need to use up all that other stuff tomorrow and have naan breads etc but means boys have curry again.

I was Tynecastle and my sisters went to Forresters. Think the coop is now the funeral directors.

@WaxOnFeckOff been on that group for ages. I love it. Especially now I am back working in a school nearby.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2020 21:31

That was the funeral directors that did my Mum's funeral. They were very nice. Ha, i'm now wondering who you are on the group. :o

My mum went to Tynecastle. Presume my dad did also as he came from Dalry (went to school with Sean Cs brother) but he was also in and out of children's homes as his parents killed themselves when he was a little boy. His grandparents lived in abject poverty and couldn't always feed and cloth him and his brother.

They did my dad's funeral too. They've been fab. They did my gran's funeral too. I remember this woman on a one woman bandwagon over the dead bodies when the planning permission went in when the kids were wee. She stopped me at Tesco.

Bless your dad.

ikswobel · 30/12/2020 21:51

@Groovee @WaxOnFeckOff I've been away from Edinburgh so long now apart from visits. Sorry to hear about your loss.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2020 21:54

thanks @ikswobel, it's been over 2 years since I lost my Mum and 20 since I lost my dad and my brother the year before. Not so raw anymore like Groovee but always missed.

Have to say supermarket beef can be fine. Last years Christmas dinner roast beef was from Lidl and was delish. I usually sear it all over on the hob before putting in the oven. We love roast beef Smile

Sturmundcalm · 30/12/2020 22:05

traditionally - NYD (no sausages, agree that soggy pastry is best bit)
freed of fitting into family tradition by lockdown - we're having steak and chips!

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2020 22:06

so what type of beef joint do you generally go for?

OP posts:
ikswobel · 30/12/2020 22:16

@WaxOnFeckOff just one from the co!!! Put it in the dish with wine, olive oil, salt and pepper... it's always good. Used to do venison in the slow cooker with mushrooms and gravy, always do a turkey breast roast at Christmas but honestly can't beat roast beef.

clare8allthepies · 30/12/2020 22:21

I’m playing it safe, got ready diced beef from Tesco. Going to cook it in the instant pot in beef stock which I do to make a beef stew or goulash and know that it always comes out well. Then will thicken the gravy and top with ready made puff pastry - sorry for cheating! 😂

Groovee · 30/12/2020 22:22

I like a joint from Lidl for Roast Beef. It's taken me most of my marriage to perfect it. Get it just about right most times now. Think most joints tell you how long to cook for now, then I add an extra 15 minutes.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2020 22:27

right you've convinced me to give it a try but in a few weeks as I have lamb steaks and yet more chicken and steak burgers and mince in the freezer that I will need to start using up. I do mean yorkshires and roasties so that's sorted, just the beef to master.

ikswobel · 30/12/2020 22:57

@WaxOnFeckOff go for it

tinseltitsbumfannythelot · 30/12/2020 23:21

My dh has just suggested using the left over pigs in blankets in the steak pie. I will report back.

readsalotgirl63 · 30/12/2020 23:32

I usually go for topside or rump for roasting. Agree meat from Lidl is usually good. I don't use salt but good dose of black pepper and some rosemary.

Booboodog · 30/12/2020 23:40

We have it on the 1st and always with sausages (best bit of the steak pie IMO). And it has to be home-made - can't eat it unless I've chopped the steak up and know there's no chewy fatty bits (boak). Always with roast potatoes, carrots and broccoli. In Ayrshire.

shouldistop · 31/12/2020 07:49

New Year's Day with mash, carrots & sweetcorn. Near Glasgow

RaraRachael · 31/12/2020 13:27

I'm in the NE and steak pie was never a thing I'd heard about for NY dinner until a couple of years ago. We always had roast beef.

MrsAmaretto · 31/12/2020 22:15

New Years Day here, no sausages with Mash, roast potatoes, carrots and peas :)
My parents are from Stirling and the Westcoast

ShortcakeDelivery101 · 01/01/2021 06:41

Ne'er Day...No sausages, just stew in the pie... mash... and marrowfat peas with vinegar... Glasgow... Can't wait til later GrinGrinGrin
