Hogmanay or Ne'er Day?

Sausages or not?

What with it? Mash/chips, roasties and Carrots/peas etc?

And what area of Scotland are you from/living in?

Me: Ne'er day, no sausages, served with Mash, peas and carrots and maybe sprouts if any left, from East coast and now in north central belt.

New Years Day around 3pm as I am usually up and showered and getting over the hangover by then. It’s an easy meal to deal with if you are feeling under par.
No sausage, always buy a raw pastry one from the farm shop or butcher. Serve it with peas along with carrot and turnip mash. The boys like mashed potato and crusty bread and butter too.
I also remove the lid and cook it separately on a baking sheet as we like our pastry crispy and well fired.
Usually need a few Gaviscon for pudding.

missrks · 30/12/2020 16:49

The sausages were obviously an exercise in bulking out the steak at one point and just stuck with some families.

My mum used to bulk out the mince with tins of beans. We said we'd rather just do with less mince than the beans addition. That probably put paid to any idea of sausages in a pie. We had stewed sausages fairly regularly though.

NY day
No sausages (although I still have a pack of pigs in blankets left so i’ll have them with it) either mash or roasties, veg will be peas
Sticky Toffee pud to go with.

Hogmanay my wee Nana always did a cracking buffet - sausages on sticks, crusty bread, crisps and dips etc. Usually a pot of soup on the go too, sometimes stovies.

SW Scotland.

From Aberdeen. Never heard of steak pie as a New Year thing until I lived in Glasgow for a while.

DH has one on New Year’s Day though. He’s from Banffshire. No sausages. Basically he sears a steak then deglazes the pan with whisky, pops it in a dish with a packet of ready made puff pastry on top. Then eats the whole thing on it’s own with more whisky. Followed by some thing with custard.

mondaywine · 30/12/2020 17:06

Aye @WaxOnFeckOff, you’re probably right. Might need essential cakes from Sugar Daddy’s too.

Used to live up the road from the wee Sugar Daddies. Ah, the PB&J slice, corner square if possible.

Anyway, have you tried www.wheat-freebakerydirect.co.uk/shop closed til New Year now but they do gf pineapple tarts amongst other things.

Tricerapops · 30/12/2020 17:15

New Year's Day with cheesy mash, carrots and peas. I prefer no sausages but happy with either, same for DH. If I make it I don't put sausages in but sometimes buy with sausages from the butcher. Glasgow.

NuniaBeeswax · 30/12/2020 17:20

"It's usually New years day for us, hogmanay is for eating little bits/party food. Never heard of sausages with the pie? Haggis yes, sausages hmm I'm originally fife, dh Inverclyde, now in the borders."

Haggis?! What perversion is this?

(My mum makes steak pie with sausages AND slice in it...)

Anyway, NYD. It's good for soaking up alcohol from the night before...

NuniaBeeswax · 30/12/2020 17:20

Forgot to mention, Inverclyde here!

LouScot · 30/12/2020 17:30

NuniaBeeswax · 30/12/2020 17:32

All the sausage non believers really need to try before they mock.

I read this as same thing with custard ShockGrin

NowellSingWe · 30/12/2020 18:06

@missrks

Originally from just outside Glasgow. Steak pie with sausages, mashed potato, peas, carrots on NY day. Veggie now but oh how I miss it! My mum made the steak pie and we used to get chased up the stairs for nicking the sausages out the pot of stew. She used to put about 24 of them in. What a treat!
Shock how do you fit 24 sausages into a steak pie? Are these pies Desperate Dan Cow pie size?
jerometheturnipking · 30/12/2020 18:14

Lunchtime on the 1st for this Fifer. There’s some controversy between DH and I about whether onions have any place in a steak pie. I make it without - just slow cooked steak and gravy under puff pastry. He bastardises it with onions so it resembles more of a glorified crispy pancake. Served with mashed tatties and boiled carrots/broccoli.

One of the farms reasonably near us has been doing a steak pie drive through this year so people don’t have to go into the farm shop.

Also partial to a Stephen’s bridie 😁

missrks · 30/12/2020 18:16

@NowellSingWe absolutely gigantor pot! She had a big chest freezer so would freeze lots!
