Hogmanay or Ne'er Day?

Sausages or not?

What with it? Mash/chips, roasties and Carrots/peas etc?

And what area of Scotland are you from/living in?

Me: Ne'er day, no sausages, served with Mash, peas and carrots and maybe sprouts if any left, from East coast and now in north central belt.

Although there is a new butchers in Dobbies, think it's called Walter Smith? DH had a sausage roll from there recently.
I'm 5 minutes from there though, and I think it's shut just now.
We are going to make one. DH is originally from Angus and he's planning to put haggis in it. I'm from the west, but no sausages here.

Madvixen · 30/12/2020 19:53

Exiled Fifer here and it'll be NY Day dinner for us. It's been bubbling away on the hob all day and I'll top it tomorrow so it takes zero effort when I come to cook it.
Sausages in steak pie has brought back some fabulous memories of my Granny's pies - I'm going to have to try it next year!!

weebarra · 30/12/2020 19:53

And the Cook meals are still there, thank goodness!

Mrsjayy · 30/12/2020 19:54

So no deli counter with lovely cakes and pies and no freezers full of Cook meals etc then? That's really sad

Nope although they did do fancy gin and they had a deli fridge but wasn't the same Xmas Sad

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2020 19:56

We have haggis with our christmas dinner instead of stuffing. I think it will be nice in a pie - it'll be all melty and unctuous.

The dunblane butchers have a great reputation for their pies and there is also a butcher in BofA but i just grew attached to the skinners ones. DH used to pass through Kippen with one of his regular customers and would stop off from time to time if it was convenient to have his break there. Sadly customer is no longer with us so he isn't there as often and they are satellite tracked so not so easy to detour.

New Years day, roast beef, roasties, Yorkshires.
Shoot me!

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2020 20:03

sounds good @dementedma, home made yorkshires I hope?

I'm not good with cooking roast beef, i had a few teuch roasts so have stayed away from it. Lamb, ham, pork and any poultry i'm fine, but beef is my nemesis.

The Spylaw did a haggis shepherds pie last Christmas. It was amazing.

Dh went to Firrhill 82-86. I was born in 1977. We had the same History teacher Mr Savage.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2020 20:04

My accidental find this year was doing the roasties in ghee - I cannot recommend it enough.

Very late this year, probably the 4th as I'm taking it up to Dd and her Bf.
Definitely links.
Serving it with red cabbage, sprouts and sweet potato mash.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2020 20:13

We can give it a couple of weeks and have a January stovies thread as I'm sure there will be a variety of recipes for those too :)

@WaxOnFeckOff roast beef is foolproof if you get a roasting tin with a lid and put a glass of wine in the bottom.
Forrester High here. Amazing to see the Edinburgh alumni on mumsnet.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2020 20:20

I will need to try it again @ikswobel, thanks for the tips. I think it was also supermarket beef so not the best quality either but then I'm scared to spend a lot in case I ruin it.

I moved house in the middle of High School and should have then gone to Forresters but I was too scared :o so I stayed where i was and we just never said I'd moved. In latter years I had a flat at Forrester park right beside the railway line.

Ooh Forrester was scary. Our English teacher used to send pupils out to buy cigarettes from the coop across the road.
Supermarket beef is fine. I always just slather it in olive oil, salt and a glass of red wine and do 30 mins per 500g and 30 mins over. But it was never good till I got the oven dish with the lid ...

Mrsjayy · 30/12/2020 20:33

I braise (is that what it's called) Roast beef in either a bit of stock or red wine it was a revelation to me when I started doing it., I used to ruin beef

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/12/2020 20:36

I do a brisket in the slow cooker for mine, then add in browned steak sausages.
Thicken up the juices for gravy.
I used ready rolled puff pastry.

I have a dutch oven though it's not very deep, that might do the job if i get a flattish roast - does tin foil over a roasting tray not work?

sounds like I made the right call about not moving school, don't get me wrong, Firrhill wasn't perfect but at least i knew who and where to avoid :o

Nothing better than stew and puff pastry!

My mum wasn't really a cook so that was something she did make. Not on Ne'er day though but on Sunday's.

Ne'er day was proper butchers steak pie with sausages, tatties and veg.

Hogmanay with fish / pizza supper.

Greater Glasgow area.

F0M0 · 30/12/2020 20:40

New Year's Day - space bone, with chips, broon sauce, no sausages, no veg 👌

WilsonMilson · 30/12/2020 20:40

F0M0 · 30/12/2020 20:40
