Hogmanay or Ne'er Day?

Sausages or not?

What with it? Mash/chips, roasties and Carrots/peas etc?

And what area of Scotland are you from/living in?

Me: Ne'er day, no sausages, served with Mash, peas and carrots and maybe sprouts if any left, from East coast and now in north central belt.

My mum used to serve on Hogmanay so usually I do too as we have a roast dinner on Ne'er Day. No sausages here - Glaswegian altho now living in the North East

@sproutburger

I’m always horrified if I’m presented with stew and a bit of pastry that’s been cooked separately.

Me too. Dh tried that trick once and was met with my total PMT-induced rage when I didn't get the nice bit of soggy, steak-y pastry that is the best part of the whole thing. I threatened to report him to his auntie, she would have had him telt.

He clearly deserved a proper row for that!

I just don’t believe there is any trick that could replicate the soggy, steaky deliciousness of those bottom layers of pastry that have been cooked on top of the stew, @WaxOnFeckOff. As a child, I would peel off the top, flakey layers of puff pastry and have to be told to eat them at the end, after enjoying the stew and the wonderfully soggy bit.

DH is english. I’ve converted him to the ways of steak pie (and also square sausage 😂. He also recognises that the soggy pastry is the best bit.

DS always laughs at the cries about avoiding soggy pastry in bake off. He says they clearly haven’t experienced the joy of soggy steak pie puff pastry.

KumquatSalad · 30/12/2020 18:39

I’ve just added some dried marrowfat peas to my online shop for tomorrow. DH loves mushy peas with fish and chips (he’s from Yorkshire and claims you can’t eat fish and chips without them), so he’ll be delighted to get some vinegary peas with steak pie.

The DC may be less delighted, however. 😂

My gran used to bulk out mince with pasta shells!

I'm old, pasta (other than tins of spaghetti/hoops) hadn't darkened the doors of the co-op at this point. i'm talking about the days when Vesta curries in a box was the ultimate in a ready meal.

@WaxOnFeckOff is the park White Park? Spent many a lunchtime there when at school.

Steak pie for dinner usually about 4 on NYD with roasties and veg. No sausage.

This year a local business is delivering their steak pie, mash, peas, cabbage, carrots.

Stovies were often a midnight staple to soak up alcohol.

Anyone who misses Malone's Bran Scones, McArthur's Bakers at Carrick Knowe opposite Scotmid do the exact ones. I've bought a lot in lockdown.

Weepingwillows12 · 30/12/2020 18:52

I have Scottish relatives and my favourite bit of any trip is a steak pie from the butchers! The English butcher ones just arent as good (based on a fairly limited comparative study I grant you)

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2020 18:53

@ikswobel

Thanks for this thread *@WaxOnFeckOff* glad we can all agree to disagree about something that really matters !!!
Indeed, i'm loving everyone's variations on a common theme. DH came home and asked what veg we are having - I swear he must have been reading this thread - has declared he fancies cabbage - I've said he can have anything he wants if he gets it from the shop and brings it home.

My DC have never experienced the delights of the soggy pastry - I'm a terrible mother.

@Groovee, yes, white park. I'd be allowed a play in there before catching the bus if I'd been good. When my mum and dad were first married they lived in a rodent infested flat above a butchers in gorgie. There also used to be a shop that sold those aprons your granny wore and general haberdashery/socks/baby clothes etc on the other corner of white park, was run by an old lady with a dowagers hump.

We almost always have cabbage boiled to death with plenty of pepper and butter just like my Grannie made with steak pie. Also a "wee tate mash".

If I make it myself I add sausages. However my local butcher makes the best I have ever tasted and he doesn't.

As per usual a bit fed up of rich food so will get round to cheering ourselves up with steak pie in a couple of weeks once the NY rush is over.

@WaxOnFeckOff we used to bus it to Dalry from Slateford Road near the train station. Cafe in Dalry Road then shop the whole way home. But nowadays that is all long gone.

I think the bakers you mean may be a plumbers office and was that all the time I was at high school. The ovens are still in the basement.

I think we had family at Hutchison and although we didn't live in gorgie/dalry, my parents obviously still had a lot of connections and fondness for the area, we often stopped there to change buses when we'd been elsewhere as well.

I'll need to ask siblings what the bakers was called as it even got a mention at DMs funeral, i've no idea why it's suddenly dropped out of my head.

Hutchison was were I lived most of my life. My granny moved to Firrhill when I was 10 and I loved walking up to hers and back.

I used to walk for hours with my friend and our dogs.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 30/12/2020 19:33

Not Scottish, but I am definitely culturally appropriating this. Steak pie with sausages? Pure genius, ya radge Grin

Mrsjayy · 30/12/2020 19:33

get one of Slaters pies from Dobbies but wasn't sure if they were open or not so had one delivered from Fallininch

Falinninch pies are lovely you will like @WaxOnFeckOff In other news Dobbies foodhall is now Sainsbury's 😲

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 30/12/2020 19:33

(Sorry if that was massively inappropriate Blush)

Mrsjayy · 30/12/2020 19:36

Ah it's fine jesusinthecabbagevan you just got a bit over excited and probably watched train spotting recentlyGrin

Morgan12 · 30/12/2020 19:37

Eh?

I thought everyone had stew at new year? I don't know anyone who has steak pie!

Anyways, stew on New Years day here. With puff pastry and mashed tatties. Stew needs to be cooked to a stringy consistency.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 30/12/2020 19:38

Watched and read Grin Had a glass of wine and just couldn't contain myself...

A steak pie by association - stringy beef stew with delicious gravy topped with pastry :o

It's what!!! I can't go all the way to Kippen for a steak pie but i'm not good with change :o

I also bought some beef olives and steak links (free delivery over £50) which we had tonight with some of the extra tub of steak pie gravy and it all went down a treat so I'm thinking the pie will be completely acceptable.

You read right we went for a coffee before Christmas and it's like a Sainsbury local. I am sure you will enjoy your pie.

clare8allthepies · 30/12/2020 19:48

I’m making one for the first time on New Year’s Day. I’m not Scottish but my partner is. I didn’t know that steak pie at new year was a thing until I walked past the butchers on New Year’s Eve when we’d only lived in Scotland for a couple of months and there was a queue right down the street!

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2020 19:51

@Groovee, I went to Firrhill school, walked all over the area too, spylaw park etc We probably walked past each other at some point :) I'm presuming we might be a similar vintage although i'm maybe a bit older.

So no deli counter with lovely cakes and pies and no freezers full of Cook meals etc then? That's really sad Sad
