Hogmanay or Ne'er Day?

Sausages or not?

What with it? Mash/chips, roasties and Carrots/peas etc?

And what area of Scotland are you from/living in?

Me: Ne'er day, no sausages, served with Mash, peas and carrots and maybe sprouts if any left, from East coast and now in north central belt.

It's usually New years day for us, hogmanay is for eating little bits/party food. Never heard of sausages with the pie? Haggis yes, sausages Hmm I'm originally fife, dh Inverclyde, now in the borders. Usually just have it with mash, carrot/sweet potato mash, neeps and chunky veg.

We've decided we're not having steak pie this new year as two of the dc will just moan but We're undecided what to have instead. Probably a kebab at this rate Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2020 13:10

I'm afraid I can't help with a recipe as I've never made it myself. Butchers do such a good job and I usually order an extra tub of gravy.

I'm guessing it's just a decent thick and meaty stew with puff pastry topping. As kids we just got the stew with a piece of pastry that had been cooked separately dumped on the top.

A bit sacrilegious, but i still tend to peel the pastry from the top and cook it on it's own and heat the "pie" in a pot so it's piping hot and the pastry isn't burned. I'm sure folks who are better cooks than me can manage without doing that.

I've bought a 3lb pie - that's a bit much for 4 eh?

No steak pie this year 😢. Need gluten free one which I normally buy at the butchers at Tollcross. However we dont live in Edinburgh and much as I like it, I don’t think I can swing a steak pie as a reason for travel.

ikswobel · 30/12/2020 13:16

Steak pie here too in West Highlands although originally from Edinburgh. It was never a thing in our house but DH family always had a steak pie on Ne'er Day. Basically Christmas dinner veg with steak pie and clootie dumpling for after.
Never heard of sausages with it. But I had never heard of mince and tatties with an egg on top which is a thing apparently

ikswobel · 30/12/2020 13:17

@WaxOnFeckOff peeling the pastry back !! That sounds like a plan, does it not all collapse? I usually make a tower of foil over it

Awrite · 30/12/2020 13:20

New Years day. Steak pie, no sausages. Served with potatoes and mashed turnip.

Veggie version for me.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2020 13:23

I guess it depends if you have precooked pastry or raw - I've done it with both but if its properly chilled it's usually not any bother even if it's cooked pastry - just run your knife under it to seperate from the foil.

I've done the covering (pre cooked) with tin foil and I think it gets moisture underneath but as i say, I'm no expert, just tried a few different things over the years. I do kinda miss the soggy bits of pastry from the underneath middle where it's sooked up a bit of the gravy but removing and cooking separately is definitely cleaner and easier.

@mondaywine, surely a visit to get a gluten free steak pie is medical reasons?

I’m making two this year, normal and GF (which my DSD will sulk about throughout the meal but I’m going to do it anyway so as not to leave anyone out, and just pretend I don’t notice the sulking). I’m in England now so I can’t buy one anywhere and have to make it.

I don’t put sausages in mine. Growing up (glasgow), it depended which butcher my mum went to whether there were sausages in it or not. My mum served it with mash and vinegary marrowfat peas. I do mash and some assortment of veg the kids will eat (they’re getting carrots and broccoli I think).

This is everyone’s favourite bit of steak pie here. DS can wax lyrical about the soggy layer of puff pastry.

I’m always horrified if I’m presented with stew and a bit of pastry that’s been cooked separately.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2020 13:35

never heard of Mince and tatties with egg but DH would definitely do that, he will do an egg atop pasta

Loving all the variety of steak pie sides, I think we can agree that there isn't a "rule" it's mostly about what you have in or what you normally have?

We have a big bag of vivaldi tatties which are great for mash so I think we will have that and I have in carrots, a few sprouts, frozen peas and sweetcorn - so probably that unless I venture out at any point.

The trick is to dish up the pie first where some re-melding of pastry and stew can occur while sorting out the mash and veg. Roasting hot plates to ensure pie doesn't get cold.

Steak pie done separately like that with fresh chips is amazing

ladylunchalot · 30/12/2020 13:43

Always ne'er day, normally about 4ish with mash and peas. I've always put sausages in and most of the butchers here have them with sausage. I'm in darkest Lanarkshire.
None for us this year as I'm veggie again and the kids aren't fussed about it. They'll all have steaks and I'll probably make a risotto.

sproutburger · 30/12/2020 14:04

Me too. Dh tried that trick once and was met with my total PMT-induced rage when I didn't get the nice bit of soggy, steak-y pastry that is the best part of the whole thing. I threatened to report him to his auntie, she would have had him telt.

Crispfan · 30/12/2020 15:06

Used to be New Year's Day but too much effort after drinking/staying up so we changed it to New Year's Eve here with party food on NYD. No sausages for us but most of my family make it with. Lanarkshire.

Crispfan · 30/12/2020 15:16

Forgot to say we're also having mash, mashed turnip, cabbage and cauliflower cheese.

Jellycatspyjamas · 30/12/2020 15:21

Steak pie on New Year’s Day here, home made with sausages, mash and whatever veggies I can persuade the kids to eat. Sausages are a relatively new addition here, there’s a restaurant in Glasgow which does the best steak and sausage pie ever - I take my inspiration from there.

FluffytheGoldfish · 30/12/2020 15:22

About 9pm on Hogmanay, no sausage in the pie but stewed sausages served alongside. Usually mashed potatoes but maybe some rosties. And yes to the viniger marrow fat peas (also Glasgow). A proper lining for all the drinking to come.
When I was wee there could be people still arriving at ours at 6am on there way home from other parties! And then there was always a big family party to go to on the 1st (and probably 2nd) so not really time to do a big dinner on the 1st.

missrks · 30/12/2020 15:24

Originally from just outside Glasgow. Steak pie with sausages, mashed potato, peas, carrots on NY day. Veggie now but oh how I miss it! My mum made the steak pie and we used to get chased up the stairs for nicking the sausages out the pot of stew. She used to put about 24 of them in. What a treat!

tinseltitsbumfannythelot · 30/12/2020 16:21

New Year's Day for us too, and even though I've lived in Glasgow my whole life the inclusion of sausages is news to me.

runningthrougharedlight · 30/12/2020 16:31

Ne’er Day, mash, peas and carrots, with the Selkirk grace said and a toast to absent friends.

Stirling but Glasgow born and bred. When my folks were young, Ne’er Day steak pie was THE dinner of the festive season, my granny on my mum’s side would serve it just after the bells and first foots would be welcome to join.

Warm wishes to all for 2021

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 30/12/2020 16:37

New Year’s Day here. Shocked/stunned/horrified by news of sausages though Xmas Grin

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 30/12/2020 16:40

New Year's Day, no sausages except for that one year my Glaswegian SIL made the pie & we Fifers thought she was trying to poison us served with mash & roast potatoes, carrots, sprouts, turnip & peas.
