Released from our dirty T4, but still bamboozled. Let’s keep each other sane on here...

Shiny new Tier 3 here, planning to do what Nicola doesn't want and hit the shops today and get my nails and eyebrows done tomorrow ... sorry Nicola!

Off to Primark i go, wish me luck!

Bytheloch · 11/12/2020 11:47

dance enjoy your new cleaner and shiner than ever tier day. It’s not just getting your nails and brows done, it’s supporting the businesses that really need it right now👍🏼 Enjoy😊

Without wanting to derail down the vaccine rabbit hole just posting this for anyone interested on the discussions surrounding the Oxford vaccine from yesterday.

No-one older than 55 in the 90% efficacy arm may account for the efficacy difference from the all age 2 standard dose arm. Less than 60% efficacy in blocking transmission even in this arm (less than 4% in the all age 2 standard dose arm). I remain sceptical that it will make much difference once the current Pfizer targeted programme is rolled out.

Good luck, I have to laugh at the 24hr Primark shopping. It should be quiet at 3am.

Dinnafashyersel · 11/12/2020 12:08

Very few things ever fit for us in Primark.

Both teen DDs live in Hollister but the sizing is reliable so they are pretty happy with on-line. They are much more choosy now it is their student loan feeling the pain though. This year has been horrific for the student PT job market. Good job they have nowhere to go in any fancy new duds.

RaspberryCoulis · 11/12/2020 12:48

14 day self-isolation period cut to 10 day which by my maths means DS can go back on Tuesday.

Wooo hoooo!!

anon444877 · 11/12/2020 12:56

So annoying - our isolating ends on Monday Wink

Mrsjayy · 11/12/2020 13:14

I buy Hollister online nearest shop is Glasgow least the website is bright Grin Good luck in primark you will need it

Mrsjayy · 11/12/2020 13:15

why is the isolation been cut down?

Dinnafashyersel · 11/12/2020 13:18

Interesting narrative on cutting isolation. Per BBC Dr Jenny and co saying it's not about trying to improve compliance but rather that the benefit to society of the last 4 days (when transmission risk observed to be tiny) doesn't outweigh the imposition on the individual.

Promising sign the experts are starting to move towards more targeted rather than society wide interventions.

JamesMoriarty · 11/12/2020 13:22

Wish it had been 10 days when we were isolating!
Good luck to those going shopping, I was tempted but decided against it.

Bikingbear · 11/12/2020 13:22

@Mrsjayy

why is the isolation been cut down?
They mentioned it a month or so ago. Most people if they are going to develop symptoms will do it within 10 days.

Lots of people weren't sticking to the 14 and it was verging on impossible to police it.
I think people were also avoiding getting tests (if I don't know I'm +ve I don't need to isolate) I also think money might be playing a part as gov are now giving money to people who need to SI and can't work from home.

I'll credit BJ with pushing it, a week or so ago it was only England that were considering it, now its all the UK.

Mrsjayy · 11/12/2020 13:25

We took my mum for food shopping she is itching to get into town i tried to persuade her to maybe wait till Monday but guaranteed she will be on the bus as I type 🙄

rookiemere · 11/12/2020 13:55

That's good news about the cut to 10 days self isolation. Seems a lot more achievable than 14 days and good to finally see SG acknowledge there is a compromise to be had between the ideal and the pragmatic.

Having a conversation with DS 14 in the car today - yes I think we've turned a corner we're finally having conversations again - he said he was really pleased that the school closures took place when he was in S2 not S3 as there is so much for him to learn this term and he said he struggled to stay engaged when online.

I guess in many ways with DS we have been lucky in the timing of this. Too old to miss a Santa outing or trick or treating and too young for it to have impacted his exam years.

Sorry just musing - probably not overly pertinent to the conversation.

Bikingbear · 11/12/2020 14:00

Rookie your right thought. I'm glad my eldest hasn't been too badly affected, mid primary. But I now really feel my LO almost 4 is really missing out on family, and doing stuff that I took for granted with the oldest.

Bikingbear · 11/12/2020 14:02

I read a report that 7yos were the worse affected age group in the first lockdown.

celtiethree · 11/12/2020 14:14

Just looked at today’s stats. I’m still bitter about treatment for some areas, (v sorry for Edinburgh). Falkirk in level 2 now in red and Stirling in amber stuck on 3. Other areas were given lower levels because of very specific outbreaks but this was denied to Stirling when they initially put Stirling in 4.

Tierful · 11/12/2020 14:16

Bikingbear that’s really interesting - - I have said that on an anecdotal basis. My 7 year old really suffered as did a significant number of their classmates that I know from talking to other parents.

If you happen I have any inkling where you saw this I’d love to read it.

Age 7 - old enough to understand what’s going on but yet not mature enough yet to process it.

Lockdown was pretty stressful for us for those reasons, absolutely no support (despite asking) from the school.

It’s been night and day since schools went back.

Wow, some pragmatism rather than a blank "there can be transmission up to 14 days so that's what you've got to do"! That is reassuring that they've finally realised that this is actual people with actual lives they are affecting. Total isolation of "contacts" for such a long period, when they are likely not to even be ill is a huge ask, even for the good of society as a whole.
Bikingbear · 11/12/2020 14:26

It was a link someone posted on here. I think it was Oxford university.

I can totally get why 7yos were really badly affected. Beside the stuff you mention they are not established on any form of social media. Kids a couple of years older are able to game online, more able to use zoom, what's app etc, kids a few years younger tend to be family focused.

NotAnActualSheep · 11/12/2020 14:27

(wonder if Gregor and Jason had to be locked in a cupboard until they agreed with the other medical officers)

Bikingbear · 11/12/2020 14:28

The quarantine 14 day vs 10day was mentioned just before Boris had to isolate so they've clearly left it long enough that he doesn't get accused of changing it to suit himself.

I agree, Stirling has been particularly shittily treated and has never been put on the appropriate level. Also got penalised for an outbreak and increased testing whereas other areas were either allowed to have high levels for months or were allowed to deal with a contained outbreak without it afecting them overall. Edinburgh and Midlothian equally poorly treated.

Yes, I agree with this totally. Home learning was difficult for us over lockdown 1 (age 8 for most of it) but I was grateful we didn't have younger ones who just couldn't understand why it was happening, and having to deal with critical early years maths/ literacy stuff - or older ones with exams and Hard Sums that I wouldn't have stood a chance with trying to explain...

However, emotionally it was a disaster. He was really missing his friends (and as an only child didn't have any siblings to annoy/ play with), couldn't cope with the standard zoom replacement for actual interactions and just got so bored doing the same things day after day (didn't we all....). So yes, although academically we were quite lucky, in terms of social interaction, I think that age was really badly affected.

Dinnafashyersel · 11/12/2020 14:38

My then 8 year old is very lucky to have a great school. Very early on the teachers realised the kids were missing each other massively and set up the chat function on google classroom.

It was far more beneficial then any of the academic work set. However being able to banter with her friends was exactly the correct incentive to persuade DD3 to engage with on-line learning.

I am surprised as I would have thought pre-readers and pre-teens (starting to disassociate from parents) would have been more affected. Most of the DC round about us are tech savvy way before they are 7 (we joke about the Masters of Entertainment ad because it is soo true).
