I didn't know that was a facility that MNet HQ were happy to facilitate, I thought it was maybe for if you'd posted something on a thread that could be identifying or upsetting or on the wrong thread and therefore inappropriate. Didn't know you could just change your mind and ask them to remove.

Well, you live and learn.

I'd have either have owned it, apologised or clarified.

Arkadia · 14/11/2020 21:29

@anon444877, I was surprised that DC went so quickly, especially after that BJ spent so much political capital on him. He must be regretting that.

MissEliza · 14/11/2020 22:02
@MissEliza - the parents weren't around to disagree: this was at school, so the kids aren't in a position to refuse. The parents who know better have now made their displeasure known and the SRU may have been tipped off Wink
It's a shocking way to behave. My two older dcs played rugby. The risk of serious injuries is real. It's so f&@king irresponsible.

prettybird · 14/11/2020 22:18

@MissEliza I agree. Dh is both a coach and a referee and has to sit through all the SRU Webinars on the guidelines and has the Covid guidelines down pat (he tells me that tackling is allowed for U18s in Level 3 but only 1 on 1, and only "small sided" games are allowed at training; he takes that to mean up to 7 aside. No scrums, rucks or mauls).

Ds is now playing senior level rugby (currently up in Aberdeen) so technically, in a Level 2 area, so can tackle etc, but as he had an emergency appendectomy 6 weeks ago, he's only just started easing back into exercise. He is very aware of the risks and is always sensible, in particular of the risks of concussion, as his granny died of a head injury related consequence of a bicycle fall Sad

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/11/2020 22:30

that's such a shame pb. Concussion is why DH gave up playing. He'd had a couple of minor ones but was playing for Leith Accies and invited a pal along to watch. The rest of the story is only what friend told him as all he remembers is waking up in hospital with no memory of the day at all. Apparently there was a heavy tackle right at the beginning and DH went down like blanket dropping to the floor and then didn't move so was carted off.

He decided after that that he might retire.

prettybird · 14/11/2020 22:42

We (both as a family and at the rugby club) take the concussion protocols very seriously: if in doubt, sit it out during a game and any concussion required 14+ days out of both games and training at youth level - and at senior level
unless you have access to sophisticated medical testing.

Cycling, which ds used to do as well, was nowhere near as conscientious about the risks - although I believe that they've got better in recent years.

WouldBeGood · 15/11/2020 00:38

Could I make a plea that this thread doesn’t become a partisan one?

WaxOnFeckOff · 15/11/2020 00:55

I think it's hard to keep politics entirely out of a thread discussing the lockdown situation but I'm happy not to talk about random politics and I think we are all keeping the "light" thread completely devoid of politics (or certainly as far as possible Smile )

Anyway I promise to try to be good and not feed it if I can help it.

titsbumfannythelot · 15/11/2020 07:46

I agree with wax, the football thread even went down that road the other night 🙄

Hopefully we'll find out on Tuesday and whatever is done will be for as short a period is possible. My husband is self employed and I've just had to suck up a substantial paycut.

WouldBeGood · 15/11/2020 09:02

I’m just happy that these threads have been really good so far. Obviously politics are relevant but it would be a shame if it went the usual way.

I’m scared about Tuesday and feeling really sad for the restaurants. Went for lunch yesterday and the placed was deserted-, owner said it’s the no wine thing. Local place posted that they just can’t sustain their (very lovely) pub restaurant.

Going to do my bit by going out for brunch 😊

goodness17 · 15/11/2020 09:20

Just had a peek at UforT Facebook page and I'm pretty disgusted at their most recent analysis of the statistics. The poster says they are 'pleasantly surprised' to see that in the last 6 weeks there have been 'only' 343 excess deaths attributed to COVID (compared to previous years excess death). How anyone can be pleased about this is beyond me Confused

RaraRachael · 15/11/2020 10:18

goodness17 I have a look at that website from time to time and I'm sick and tired of them using EIS claims that schools should close and move to blended learning as an excuse for teacher bashing. I know some of our parents are on there and it doesn't surprise me as they're the ones who are always phoning and emailing the school about ridiculous stuff.

This is a nice page and I've enjoyed having people actually reply and interact with stuff I've posted which has never happened on MN before. Grin

StatisticallyChallenged · 15/11/2020 10:22

They have come properly cuckoo - the conspiracy theorists have taken over. It's incredible how acceptable it is on there to say you believe covid is a hoax- seen so many say it and it never questioned.

WouldBeGood · 15/11/2020 10:25

I got chucked off it for suggesting what you said, @StatisticallyChallenged 😂

StatisticallyChallenged · 15/11/2020 10:33

I've only stayed on it to keep an eye as they sometimes hear stuff, but also because it's useful to know what crazy stuff parents are reading. We've already had a refusal to use an infrared thermometer that sounded exactly like their chats

Lidlfix · 15/11/2020 10:41

Screenshotting the most vile of the threats and the ensuing "likes" and sharing on other platforms can be quite therapeutic I have found. This week teachers were arseholes and cretins and kicking up the fanny was recommended. But they are not teacherbashers.

goodness17 · 15/11/2020 10:47

I followed them to start with back in May as I was keen for the schools to reopen as normally as possible but they've really turned. The end of the post I read about the statistics and 'only' 343 deaths in 6 weeks ended with a party/celebrate emoji...disgusting

anon444877 · 15/11/2020 10:53

That is disgusting - there is a huge case for Twitter and Facebook to answer for not moderating better where lies and abuse is being spread. It's one of the best things about mumsnet that personal attacks and threads that turn into nasty fights get deleted.

I'm not a huge fan of all the restrictions and question the cost/benefit of some but I can see that teachers are bearing more risk, it's possible not to want schools to close and also understand teachers' concerns about their safety.

anon444877 · 15/11/2020 10:54

And all I'll say about politics on scotsnet is a general point that it is a whole lot more well intentioned and friendly than those sorts of things on Twitter etc.

NearWildHeaven · 15/11/2020 11:02

I’m same as goodness17 with that FB page. Swiftly came off when they announced the schools would be back.

That “celebration” sounds pretty disgusting to me.

goodness17 · 15/11/2020 11:03

@anon444877 and that's exactly where I stand as a secondary teacher...I want schools to remain open but with safety measures, including the use of face masks, where appropriate Smile

anon444877 · 15/11/2020 11:19

Yes it's sensible, these social media sites where there is no moderation become an echo chamber for extremism and inability to reach sensible compromises.

tigger1001 · 15/11/2020 11:28

@StatisticallyChallenged

I've only stayed on it to keep an eye as they sometimes hear stuff, but also because it's useful to know what crazy stuff parents are reading. We've already had a refusal to use an infrared thermometer that sounded exactly like their chats
Exactly the same here. I no longer get notifications for it and it doesn't show in my time feed but can still go onto it.

Some of the comments on there are just crazy, it's become really quite extreme.

StatisticallyChallenged · 15/11/2020 11:28

I joined for similar reasons, wanted schools back open. I'm happy with reasonable safety measures. I have to admit I'm unsure about masks for kids, especially younger ones, as I hate wearing them myself and I also suspect that the hygiene going alongside wearing them all day is so poor that it's probably pointless. I had a mask on at the hairdresser yesterday and after a couple of hours it was really wet. I'd seen a suggestion they'd be required in exam halls if exams go ahead which I personally think is shitty. I think that's very different to the "anything not normal is unacceptable " stance

Scotslassie1 · 15/11/2020 11:30

Its sad that they're given a voice on the MSM in place of experts.
