Kids classes are on. Even in Glasgow/ Lanarkshire. I've been to them!

Children's activities are more important in my eyes so I'm glad the SG is focusing on this. As are people I know and speak to.

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/11/2020 13:02

Yes, because I definitely didn't have some nice meals out - with alcohol in England recently Hmm and pubs and restaurants have only recently been re-opened here in such a limited way that our local can't afford to open everyday now anyway. Loads in my area didn't even bother. One of my favourites was at least doing takeaway during the first lockdown but they've neither re-opened in person or for take-away since being told to shut months ago so I think that is them done for.

Wetherspoons closing Scottish pubs

Lucked · 14/11/2020 13:05

Yes all my kids classes are back even dancing and swimming, the swimming is a private company though, I am not sure the council pools ever reopened here even before the current restrictions - they may have and I missed it.

sturgette · 14/11/2020 13:22

@Bytheloch

Oh no, you just poked the cinders, we’ll have the Sturgettes piling on to this threadWink

Fed up in central belt too. Funny, not funny thing is, I have some friends in England complaining already after just a few days- they weren’t aware we’d been at it for some time here with much tighter restrictions over a longer period.
Switching up to tier 4 will just be the end of the line for locally-owned hospitality and small businesses in my areaSad

Here you go

You are obviously not talking to the owners of soft plays, kids outdoor activity centres, sports (particularly those whose coaches aren’t allowed to travel between tiers for working with kids groups), Brownie groups unable to meet other than zoom, as their usual meeting hall isn’t able to host them. Children’s dance and drama groups ditto their facilities can’t function properly. Private swimming lessons are back on for the few, not the many.
Bytheloch · 14/11/2020 13:26

Even the organised buggy walks- essential contact for new parents- aren’t allowed to meet🤦‍♀️ in these tiers.

OOAOML · 14/11/2020 13:30

My son's swimming lessons (Edinburgh Leisure so arms-length council) are starting but he doesn't want to go mainly because of the logistics- he has to arrive pool-ready under his clothes and not go into the venue until 5 minutes before. We don't have a car so that means crossing town on a bus route that's unreliable even before the pandemic. Even without the extra travel time we could build in he doesn't want to get the bus (don't blame him - when I've been on buses people are not distancing, variable mask wearing and a fair amount of coughing close to others). He's autistic and whilst he's coped really well with most of the rules this is too much for him to cope with. Also previous experience about his routines around changing don't fill me with confidence on getting him into the pool.

Hopefully restrictions will ease and when it stops being so cold and dark the practicalities will not seem so bad.

Arkadia · 14/11/2020 13:33

In my case we have

  • Cubs, they have given up
  • scouts, they say they are about to do outdoor stuff, but for now nothing.
  • Gymnastics, it says it will restart soon
  • Art class, operating as normal, has been on since those things opened up.
  • Piano, operating as normal. Has been on as soon as those things opened up.
  • Swimming, 50% one kid, 33% the other. It has been on for about a month.

We went to the Safari park about 3 weeks ago and I was surprised by how "normal" it felt.

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 14/11/2020 13:33

None of the groups my children go to are open. Many of them were in libraries, which are also not open in Glasgow. (I know some are - around 3 Hmm but none are anywhere near me. The swimming classes we go to use school lets - not open.

Callisto1 · 14/11/2020 13:43

Our dance classes have been going since August. And Edinburgh leisure swimming is reopening next week. The only activity that is still zoom is Rainbows.
Family swimming has been back since October I think though slots are hard to get if you don't book well ahead. So at least kids activities are not all doom and gloom.

Callisto1 · 14/11/2020 13:46

Libraries are a bit of a mess in Edinburgh also. Think we only have 4 or 5 opened so far. None of them local to me sadly.
I dread going into tier 4 precisely because I think all the kids stuff will shut.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 14/11/2020 13:48

I’m in the East. Our private swimming classes are still closed to most, no brownies, rainbow, guides. The after school drama class which used the school building was told it couldn’t so it went outside and is renting the blowing club. No choirs or orchestras or inside groups at all.

Adult stuff is all off

The guide leader said they expect to lose half their guides as people just don’t come back.

prettybird · 14/11/2020 14:06

Kids rugby training (up to U18) is still going on in Tier 3. There are some restrictions (size of groups for examples and only allowed touch rugby, not full contact and lots of hand sanitiser) which means that we need more coaches but my local club still has good numbers attending.

Not sure what happens if we move into Tier 4.

rookiemere · 14/11/2020 14:08

As usual in these things there seems to be huge discrepancies between private and public, with poorer children being the losers.

DS 14 is at private school courtesy of GPs. School is more or less back to normal, plus they have rugby training 2 days a week after school and internal school matches on Saturdays, after school football is once a week.
They are following slightly reduced numbers for rugby tackling rules - thank the lords and please may this continue post covid - I'm much more worried about the likelihood of my DS being paralysed than anything else.

I've got a heavily discounted trial membership to a posh gym with outdoor heated pool - on Saturday mornings you'd be forgiven for thinking that covid-19 doesn't exist at all from the hoard of swimming classes and young families in the pool. They have some vague rules like no more than 8 per lane. Yet I hear from my friends that their council swimming lessons are severely restricted and they can't get changed post swim.

As a by the by at the cafe at the gym, there's definitely people from more than 2 households meeting up inside although they do make an effort not to sit too closely.

BlueThursday · 14/11/2020 14:09

Where I am it seems to be those who are renting council owned premises are the ones still closed

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/11/2020 14:12

Yep, our council pool has only recently re-opened, just going by a friends experience, you need to book a session. You get allocated a cubicle and leave your stuff in there, no showers and a member of staff allows you in to your cubicle to get changed and then it's cleaned before next use. She is enjoying being able to be back as she has a lung condition which she usually manages by strengthening her lungs by swimming...

iquitelikenormalityafterall · 14/11/2020 14:13

I’d love to take my kids swimming, our pool is only open to lane swimmers. They’ve not been since March! They won’t learn how at this rate. There’s no baby groups open here, no classes at all. Just school at the moment

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 14/11/2020 14:18

rookie you are spot in there about the poorer kids. As usual, state stuff hugely reduced.

And even our swim club - you can’t get changed after - you need to put a onesie on. Fine for us parents who drive and have cars.
If not then you won’t go as no one wants to walk home freezing cold on a Scottish November night.

PapsofJura · 14/11/2020 14:19

Swimming lessons only started back here last week.

Football can’t get access to pitches to have matches but can have training.

Tennis is open but that’s a private club.

Soft play shut, other one closed down permanently.

So in my little bit of the central belt, things are not all running but I’m hugely appreciative of those that are.

prettybird · 14/11/2020 14:19

I do know that some private schools and some rugby clubs not ours Wink are playing full contact against the rules from the SRU - so technically they're not covered by the SRU insurance if any kid were to have an accident Shock

Some of the parents at our local not posh or elite Wink club (whose kids are at the local private school) have complained to their kids' school about the full contact as they know it's not allowed (they coach at our club at the weekend, so know what is and what isn't within the guidance).

As it happens, pointing out that they're not insured is probably the most effective approach: money talks Wink

Arkadia · 14/11/2020 14:23

Yes, forgot to add that a dance class in Glasgow never restarted and yes there is a huge discrepancy between private and public/quasi-public/in-public-premises activities. In my LA the trust that runs libraries, pools etc is definitely hampering things, as those who have their own premises seem to have fewer issues.
Also big organisations like scouts seem to find it impossible to run things and very likely (as someone said) they will just haemorrhage members.

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/11/2020 14:29

@Arkadia, do you know that you changed your name to Sturgette and started the other thread?

Arkadia · 14/11/2020 14:32

@WaxOnFeckOff, huh??
