October lockdown?

Hi
I can’t see another thread on this and I think it’s more Scotland than general CV related.

Any thoughts on this? I’m a teacher and there’s been no word at work but I’m hoping to go away for a week in half term (west coast) and really really hoping lockdown doesn’t happen! Selfish I know, but we need a break!

Anyone got any views on the likelihood?

I think this is one of the nicest threads I've been on in a while.

Hioe the teachers are enjoying the break, we have a week to go here but I'm so glad we've got the point. My boys are 100x happier back at school, in a routine and seeing friends - even if they wont admit it!

derxa · 10/10/2020 11:10

Can I just drop in a word of praise for the NHS in Scotland. I found a breast lump earlier in the year and the amount of care and attention I've received has been amazing. They moved Lanarkshire breast cancer surgery to the Nuffield in Glasgow so CV free. I've recently seen my oncologist and he spent 40 minutes explaining treatment options.
We're in lockdown in rural South Lanarkshire. My God it's dreary.
Love to you all fellow Scotsnetters

prettybird · 10/10/2020 11:37

I'll add in more words of praise for the NHS: ds rang us in the morning last week saying he needed help as wasn't feeling well (like we could do anything from 150 miles away Confused), delay of 2.5 hours while we persuaded him to ring the GP for an appointment, rung by the GP 4 hours later, seen 45 minutes later at 4.20, at the hospital by 5 and his appendix out at midnight. Can't fault them except maybe the multiple surgeons who poked him straight in the appendix while they were deciding if it was indeed appendicitis Wink

derxa · 10/10/2020 11:43

I walked past a load of S1 boys all throwing leaves at each other today, with much hilarity and I couldn’t stop smiling at them! One of the happiest sights this year is when our local high school went back and the kids went down the street for their chips and greasy bridies.

nibdedibble · 10/10/2020 11:45

Another one with thanks for the teachers.
Since March you’ve worked your arses off with nothing but uncertainty hanging over schools. And it’s risky, all those kids who are teeming with energy or arrogance and viruses. Thanks for keeping at it 💐

And all the new P1s in their too big blazers. My heart melted a bit!

@derxa sorry to hear that. I’m glad the NHS have been good. It’s in times of vulnerability that we really need that care.💗 Were you shielding? I hope that you manage to find some things to keep you positive over the next few weeks. This lockdown for us is crap.

The forecast tomorrow morning is beautiful so I’m going for a very early 7am walk with my husband - we have a great view about a mile down the road and hopefully a coffee shop on our way back. That’s before kids sports practise car runs at 9.30. Then I’m going to get my marking finished!

Delicious steak pie from the butchers tonight and hopefully a film that my teenagers will want to watch too. Any recommendations?

@Goingdooolally

Jumping in to answer this:

Have you seen Knives Out?

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/10/2020 12:58

I think that when it's needed in emergencies, the NHS is still very much in operation. A bit disappointed with the lack of progress on lots of other things though which will bite us in the bum later I think. Hope everything is going well dexra Flowers

@Goingdooolally what age teens and what things do you object to?(we were never that bothered with violence and "normal" sexual content - i.e. nothing too kinky just from an embarrassment pov)

Gran Torino
The Life of Brian
Ted
James Bond movies
The Great Escape

BlueThursday · 10/10/2020 13:22

I’d like to give thanks to everyone who kept going and keeps going through this.

NHS, teachers,Tesco, my milkman and the local chippie

As much as I’ve worked this I’ve been home safe and sound so I take my hat off to the lot of them for getting out there and keeping things going

Goingdooolally · 10/10/2020 13:41

Having been a quite bad tempered thread (did I call someone patronising and passive aggressive?!Shock) this has turned out to be very cheering! @WaxOnFeckOff how are you doing? We’ve still not heard about our rental but my DH says not to chase as it’ll be harder for them to cancel the later they leave it- he’s canny that one!

Film wise -yes we’ve seen Knives Out. Enjoyed it but it was slightly weird!

They are two boys - 14 and 15. They like war stuff, adventures. We also watched Outer Bounds on Netflix which was good. Quite like sci fi too.

Goingdooolally · 10/10/2020 13:42

Do you know, I’ve never watched the Great Escape!

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/10/2020 13:54

I'm awrite thanks @Goingdooolally. Did an illicit trip to Costco today, roads were quiet as was Costco. Down, shopped and home before 11am.

14 and 15 is a great age for watching movies together (mine are only a year apart too).

I take it you'll have seen all the lord of the rings/star wars/batman type stuff? they are old enough now to get into the plot and not too worried about a bit of shooting etc. Old enough for a bit of Tarantino?
Reservoir Dogs/Inglourious Basterds/Kill Bill?

Otherwise, retro is usually a good shout - Trains, Planes and Automobiles?

Or start off a box set? Godless is a good one - it's just 6 episodes I think - would take you through the hols, one episode at a time?

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/10/2020 13:55

The old war one about Telemark is good as well - can't remember the title.

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/10/2020 13:55

Also Escape to Victory

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/10/2020 13:58

Outlaw King was good?

RaraRachael · 10/10/2020 14:05

Any suggestions for nice walks around Edinburgh city centre? Smile

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/10/2020 14:08

This is a great site for looking at for walks.

This one would be nice, I've not down that whole route but think i've covered most parts at some point.

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/10/2020 14:13

Also round about Victoria street and into the grass market and up into Greyfriars and over to the meadows

Goingdooolally · 10/10/2020 14:15

Thanks @WaxOnFeckOff - Godless looks great. Do you think it’s ok for a soon to be 14 year old?

Walks in Edinburgh. Well I love just a walk down Princes Street, the castle is so majestic. A walk down to Stockbridge and Inverleith park/Botanics from town is lovely. You can see all the way to Fife.

Carlton Hill is great as is the Old Town up to the Meadows and Brunstfield.

I would have thought so, I suppose it depends on how shielding you are as a family? there is shooting/violence and definitely a naked woman or two. A few women are lesbians and some are prostitutes but I don't remember anything gratuitous or not relevant to the plot.

It's been a while since I last watched it but I liked it as it shows women being strong and independent whilst still being about a subject that men and boys would enjoy. Something for everyone. I recommend it quite a lot. You could always give an episode a try and see what you think?

Just dug out the parental guide which you can peruse and decide from there.

prettybird · 10/10/2020 14:42

I'll never be old enough for Tarantino Wink

Very squeamish, moi Blush

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/10/2020 14:51

I'm trying to think if any aren't violent but I'm struggling - Jackie Brown is immense but still violent.

There you go pb that's the parental guide for Jackie Brown - unless you are offended by swearing it looks like you might manage it? The soundtrack is great.
