As far as i can see the spread started in Glasgow then spread to the areas around it.
NS failed to sanction them properly.
She locked Aberdeen at 82 cases.

Cases in Grampian and the Highlands are low. We are now being unfairly sanctioned. The whole thing is a joke.

NS doesn't have the guts to fully lockdown Glasgow.

Ppl in Aberdeen have less trust in NS as this goes on.

I have no real problem with the restrictions

I have a problem with the fact that Glasgow was treated much more softly than Aberdeen, and now the whole of the country is being punished despite the fact it’s still the Central Belt that is way ahead on numbers.

That’s what is so unfair.

I also think students have been treated badly - encouraged to go away to Uni even though most classes are held remotely. Now surprise, surprise they’ve done what young people do and they have socialised and there are spikes in the Halls.

I want to know who’s looking after these young adults when they become unwell away from home. Most will have a mild viral illness, but some will become seriously unwell, and someone should be taking responsibility for looking after them.

The whole situation is ill thought through.

Arkadia · 23/09/2020 12:08

This I don't get... NS and BJ have identical strategies, only aspects of the presentation are different. And yet BJ gets vilified, while NS is "compassionate". Huh?
At the end of the day you could swap them round and it wouldn't make much difference to the outcome.

cambrianexplosion · 23/09/2020 12:48

@Ecosse

The hospitals are empty *@cambrianexplosion*.
For now they may be 'empty'. Actually hospitalisations are rising slightly. They will be overwhelmed if cases keep rising, added to normal winter pressures. They have to head that off in advance of time. You have 2-14 day incubation periods, then a further 7-10 days average before admittance to hospital if that occurs.
Callisto1 · 23/09/2020 13:13

@WhoKnowsWhatsAroundTheCorner, yes
the students have been massively let down by the UK government. First the whole fiasco with exam results. Then they get encouraged to attend uni just to be shut into halls. And all the small university towns that will have to cope with massive outbreaks are just treated as collateral.

I really don't understand why they didn't give financial support to unis so that they could do remote learning without going bust. At least for subjects that are non practical. They should have also reduced the fees for this year. We'll probably spend more money dealing with the virus spread due to this mismanagement than it would've cost to do the sensible thing...

Arkadia · 23/09/2020 13:48

@cambrianexplosion,

Why should they? Hospitals didn't get overwhelmed last winter and now we are much better prepared and we are monitoring the virus more closely than you would monitor someone impregnated by Alien.
Should hospitalisations and deaths start to go up at an alarming rate, then you do something. But if it doesn't happen, if it never happened, what are we doing? What is the point of all this monitoring?

I wonder if anyone knows how many people on average take a flu shot "to protect the vulnerables". Not very many, I would expect... And yet society kept functioning.

diplodocusinermine · 23/09/2020 13:52

Whoknows, DH works at one of the Edinburgh universities. All the students have been very carefully prepared for their arrival - overseas students were housed and fed free for 14 days after their arrival so they could quarantine. The spikes have been caused by students socialising in big groups when they were asked not to. Those who have tested positive are being very well looked after.

iskwobel · 23/09/2020 13:56

@Arkadia in Scotland the seasonal flu vaccination is offered free to all school age children, pensioners, asthmatics and people with other weaker immune systems or respiratory disease. It's also offered to social care workers and some nhs staff.
I think there are some other groups too but can't remember them all!
Other people can pay for it at pharmacies.

I think the reason is to protect the vulnerable.

Arkadia · 23/09/2020 14:01

@iskwobel, that I know, but I have wonder what the take up is outside school children, despite it is free. Ok, the elderly perhaps make an effort, but the rest?

iskwobel · 23/09/2020 14:05

@Arkadia the data for 2018-19 is here
www.hps.scot.nhs.uk/a-to-z-of-topics/influenza/

The uptake for under 65 at risk is 42% for all at risk groups so that's obviously going to be a wide spectrum, the full list is given. For over 65s it's more like 75-80%.
Most children do take the nasal spray although the data aren't on that page generally 29 out of 30 in a class who are able to will take it.

TartanTed · 23/09/2020 14:22

I think NS has lost the plot.
The local lockdown in Aberdeen felt way OTT at the time and had a massive impact on the local economy that was just starting to get back on its feet. Seeing how Glasgow and other areas with outbreaks have subsequently been dealt with it definitely now feels Aberdeen was being punished.
I am sick to the back teeth of the SNP and their politically motivated handling of this crisis.

Heffapotamus · 23/09/2020 14:46

What annoys me the most is that it penalises the poor again. If you can afford to socialise (pub, coffee shop, restaurant) great, but if you can't, you're left freezing in a garden somewhere!
I'm at home alone with no one I can reasonably form a bubble with. It's truly shit.
And still some will break the rules ... ☹️

anon444877 · 23/09/2020 14:52

I did think that too heffapotamus - not everyone can afford to even meet for a £3 overpriced coffee whilst taking more risk in a cafe than they otherwise would at home. Hopefully these restrictions won't be in place for the next 6 months through-out the bad weather.

I'm still dubious how many rainy park play dates are going to go - I've been in the park in the rain and we're usually the only ones there. You can't use play equipment when it rains as it's not safe.

GimpMask · 23/09/2020 16:06

Living in Aberdeen I won’t be voting SNP again. I feel we’ve been very harshly treated compared with the SNP stronghold of Glasgow and now we all have to pay as Glasgow should have been locked down at least 3 weeks ago. Thank for nothing Sturgeon.

Torvean32 · 23/09/2020 16:08

Exactly @WhoKnowsWhatsAroundTheCorner

Its a joke that areas with low cases ( in some areas no cases) are being restricted due to the Central Belt. NS is losing favour very quickly in N.E.

Ok so to show a bit of perspective picture one is the breakdown today and picture two is a breakdown from 10.09.20. It is clear to see that whilst the jump in numbers in Glasgow and Lanarkshire are growing considerably faster the outlying areas including Aberdeen are also growing. Bearing in mind that this weekend is September weekend in the central belt area and the forthcoming October school week I do think these are precautions to stop this getting way out of hand again. She made clear about travelling abroad over the October holiday but I can bet that there will be many who will still choose to go that holiday. As for comparing and saying that NS and BJ are the same I'm astounded at that I think they couldn't be any further apart in how they have handled this, he is a blundering baboon and she is to the point and explains everything no silly messages like 'stay alert'. She can't do right for doing wrong can she?

Does anyone disagree with Scottish restrictions?

DosieHosie · 23/09/2020 16:15

She can't do right for doing wrong can she?
she loved it when everyone told her how amazing she was over the summer though🤔 and now it’s all going up the shitter we should just keep quiet? Not a chance. Our numbers are no better than England so she’s as crap as Boris.

SBTLove · 23/09/2020 16:20

Why do pp keep harping about Glasgow’s special treatment? they’ve been under tighter restrictions for the last few weeks!! No visitors at home.

OnNaturesCourse · 23/09/2020 16:23

I was seriously starting to like NS and her decisions over the summer but lately... She's a mini copy of BJ and has totally lost her no nonsense approach to this.

I mean... My daughter is away at her grandparents for childcare today but the 'exchange' had to be done in the garden? When I collect her I've got to stand outside and wait at my own parents house? Makes absolutely no sense at all.

DosieHosie · 23/09/2020 16:23

The tighter restrictions in Glasgow clearly aren’t working as the numbers are getting higher. But Sturgeon would rather stop all of Scotland visiting each other than introduce firmer guidelines in Glasgow. It’s an utter joke.

Kaitness · 23/09/2020 16:34

It's shite up in Caithness. Kid can't visit elderly grandparents down the same quiet village lane. Not been able to get anywhere we might catch the virus either even to local beaches as they are all packed to the hilt with motorhomes and wild (dirty) campers so we can't access them. Irony being that everywhere is chock full with mostly English tourists who believe the Highlands should be grateful for their presence and can then go home and sit in their friends home to tell them all about their holiday! Feels a bit having your nose rubbed in it.

Ecosse · 23/09/2020 17:00

The big problem we have across the U.K. is lack of an effective and fast test and trace system. Germany and Italy have dealt with local outbreaks well using this without the need for national restrictions.

Both Sturgeon and Johnson have had 6 months to get this working and it’s disgraceful that national restrictions are now being imposed due to their (joint) failure to do so.

SBTLove · 23/09/2020 17:12

@OnNaturesCourse
A mini BJ? have you been drinking?
I haven’t noticed NS hiding in fridges and failing to string a sentence together? That man is incapable of making any decisions without his organ grinders 🙄

DosieHosie · 23/09/2020 17:14

Sturgeon is better at public speaking than BoJo but both Scotland and England are now in the shit over Covid with comparable R rates and mortality rates. They’re both crap.

SBTLove · 23/09/2020 17:23

Do you expect them to lock ppl up? the rise in numbers is down to ppl ignoring guidelines nearly all increased cases are being traced to household gatherings, maybe the population should start taking some personal responsibility.

DosieHosie · 23/09/2020 17:29

Oh, so when it was going well it was Sturgeon basking in all the praise but now it’s gone tits up the public are to be blamed. 🧐
