Does anyone disagree with Scottish restrictions?

As far as i can see the spread started in Glasgow then spread to the areas around it.
NS failed to sanction them properly.
She locked Aberdeen at 82 cases.

Cases in Grampian and the Highlands are low. We are now being unfairly sanctioned. The whole thing is a joke.

NS doesn't have the guts to fully lockdown Glasgow.

Ppl in Aberdeen have less trust in NS as this goes on.

Arkadia I totally agree.
I think everyone knows it and this whole "Here's some extra rules-lets see if you can keep to them" thing is just a piece of theatre to get us used to the idea.
Last week it was all: "Eat out to help out, Get back to work, Do your bit for the economy. It's perfectly safe"
It's quite difficult to do a 180 from that to full lock down and expect people to accept it.

cambrianexplosion · 23/09/2020 09:50

I'm in Glasgow.

We don't all break the rules.

I don't mind the restrictions, and I'm not an SNP member at all. I don't mind following the rules as I don't want hospitals to be at any risk of being overwhelmed.

I get that it's an imposition but really it's not that big a deal is it?? Can see family outdoors or in a cafe etc - people can still see their families. Go shopping etc. Kids should be playing outside anyway, no matter the weather - it's good for them. Ok, smaller groups but that's it.
Masks are a minor inconvenience.

I honestly don't see what the big deal is.

cambrianexplosion · 23/09/2020 09:58

I think we should reframe our reluctance to go out in bad weather. Unless it's torrential rain or a storm or something, stock up on waterproofs and woolies and get outside for some socially distanced meet ups.

Maybe it's cause I grew up on a farm, or that I don't drive so walk everywhere in all weathers and always have. It's honestly no problem or hardship for the vast majority of people. It's healthy. My DC walk at least 4 miles a day to and from school, often even more. Me 6-8 miles plus, to school and work. It's no problem.

Ecosse · 23/09/2020 10:02

The hospitals are empty @cambrianexplosion.

BrazenlyDefying · 23/09/2020 10:05

Agree @cambrianexplosion. We're on the outskirts of the city, over the border in East Dunbartonshire, but still Glasgow. No parties round here. Social distancing and lots of mask wearing.

Our cases here are low - 28 over the past week. I would support what she said yesterday about offering more detailed breakdowns about where these cases are located. Obviously 28 cases within 3 streets in Kirkintilloch is a lot less concerning to me than 28 separate cases dotted around the county, or 28 cases all in my local area or local schools.

combatbarbie · 23/09/2020 10:09

But 28 in an area is high, the UK average is 14 per 100,000

kikidee · 23/09/2020 10:12

I've found this thread to be quite surprising reading. i'm in Glasgow and have been subject to the new restrictions for the last 3 weeks. It's not ideal, clearly, but it could be a great deal worse. The finger pointing and blaming Glasgow house parties for people in the Borders (say) not being able to see their parents is quite something. There were definitely some outbreaks linked to larger house parties but mainly they were around smaller groups meeting in houses which is exactly what you were all doing too until yesterday and you would have ended up in the same position as Glasgow on numbers (proportionally). You can see that the number of cases is rising in all areas of Scotland - Glasgow was just ahead.
We can still travel and we can still meet indoors in a non-household setting and most importantly, my children are still in school. We can't have everything at the moment so if the trade-off for that are some restrictions on who I can meet and where I can meet them, then that's fine with me.

Stressedmummyof4 · 23/09/2020 10:32

Glasgow and surrounding areas have been on restrictions for a few weeks now but it doesn't appear to be making much difference. Numbers are growing in other outlying areas too. I actually think she is moving in the right direction, she's trying to nip it in the bud before it becomes uncontrollable again.

Given the difference in the population sizes of Aberdeen and Glasgow with surrounding areas I'm going against the grain and saying it's better to be doing this hopefully for a shorter time on and off rather than the full lockdown we all had over summer.

Arkadia · 23/09/2020 10:35

@kikidee, yes quite. But the language employed by the FM, or at least what comes to me, is quite clear, isn't it? We are on the naughty step and about to be sent to the HT.
In my LA there have been 86 cases (trend going up, like everywhere else) over the last 7 days with 300.000 people. The GG "lump" has 1.2m people and 782 positives.
So, GG has approximatively 4 times the population and 9 times the number of positives. When GG had "my" number of positives, they didn't have any problems, so why should we now?
The house party thing to me is complete nonsense. Maybe it is a large component of in-house transmission, but that doesn't mean "house parties", which clearly wish to apportion blame and create a scapegoat.
And anyway, as pointed out on several articles, this is just theatre preparing us for bigger things to come.

Arkadia · 23/09/2020 10:40

@Stressedmummyof4, OK, she nips it in the bud, and then what? No sooner are the measures relaxed than the numbers will go back up.

Stressedmummyof4 · 23/09/2020 10:42

@Arkadia yes more than likely but really unless your willing to just get out there and risk yourself catching it or passing into someone who wouldn't live if they caught it then unfortunately a few weeks of restrictions now and again might just be the way we need to live for a while.

Lalapurple · 23/09/2020 10:44

I hate the new rules, but I can see the sense in them unfortunately.

Arkadia · 23/09/2020 10:46

@Stressedmummyof4, the problem is that "for a while" equates in this case to "the foreseeable future".
A change in narrative is needed.

Arkadia · 23/09/2020 10:48

And don't forget that we wasted the summer chasing unicorns...
Had NS been more realistic and straightforward then probably so many people would feel so aggrieved now (knowing that things will only get worse).

Stressedmummyof4 · 23/09/2020 10:55

@Arkadia ok sorry for the foreseeable, but yes my stance remains the same. Sturgeon takes it left right and centre. I'm not and never have been interested in politics but I can honestly say I think she's doing a good job, daily without fail she gets up there gives an update then opens herself up to questions. The plonker south of the border, has all but disappeared I actually feel sorry for English people having to put up with that.

She has been clear and consistent in her messaging explains things in detail and above all shows compassion.

I for one would not want nor be able to handle what she has to do just now, I can't imagine having to put up with all the pressure and let's face it criticism she faces daily.

I think it's important to look at other countries and take on board sturgeon has not caused the second wave this is something that happens.

We all need to pull on our big girl pants and accept that these things need to be done in order to protect each other. We should be looking out for and making contact with people we know are vulnerable. Making the most of days like today where it is bright and dry and meeting people within the restrictions outside. I have vulnerable people in my family who I too can not go and see but I tell myself daily it's for their good and safety!

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 23/09/2020 10:56

And don't forget that we wasted the summer chasing unicorns...

I think this is one of the most annoying things for me. We're now being told that coming from a lower base is helping us, but our infection rates are exactly on par with England (and our percentage positive is actually considerably higher right now). This reminds me of the seamless pivot from blending learning being the only plan discussed to "that was always a contingency", i.e. spin to deflect from a major miscalculation.

Stressedmummyof4 · 23/09/2020 11:00

She was dealing with the unknown trying to guide 5.50 million people through a pandemic that she knew little of and was learning on a daily basis, the same as any other leader.

I think given the fact it's a respiratory virus, most people were under some sort of impression it would get worse again towards the winter. There was plenty in the news about a second wave after all.

SBTLove · 23/09/2020 11:11

@Arkadia
Every country has learned as they’ve went , it’s new and unprecedented and NS is listening to scientific and medical advice, she’s not making it up herself🙄

prettybird · 23/09/2020 11:18

I'm fine with the "new" restrictions - although as I'm in Glasgow, they're not new Wink

They're not as bad as full lockdown and I thought that the Glasgow figures were coming down, just not as quickly as they'd like Sad Although I've been hearing about quite a few outbreaks at Glasgow Uni, which might push them up again Shock.

Dh and I enjoy our daily walk and it's a habit I hope we - and many other Glaswegians - continue, even after Covid Smile. It's cost me though Wink, as I've now bought specialist duck food to feed the ducks, moorhens and coots at the Maxwell Park pond Grin

Arkadia · 23/09/2020 11:20

@SBTLove, I don't know in what parallel universe you live in, but I remember well the anti-English rhetoric over the summer. NS has skillfully used the pandemic (and the unicorns) to further her agenda, despite MANY experts were saying that her approach was meaningless.
OK, one tries one's best, but then admit that your strategy has been a waste of time and change course, but no..
So, she is every working day in front of the camera? Big deal! You would have thought she had more pressing matters than spending EVERY-SINGLE-MORNING getting prepared for her morning show (although now probably she goes on autopilot, but still make up, hair, etc. do take time to get organized).

IwishIwasyoda · 23/09/2020 11:24

Yet more political posturing and unenforceable rules.

Surely meeting in cafes is more of a risk than meeting in a home? My elderly parents wouldn't dream of meeting us in a cafe because SD is pretty poor / tables and people are generally too close. neither can walk far either nor would they cope well sitting outside in poor weather even if wrapped up. So that's us fucked for meeting up isn't it and is deemed acceptable that my mum sinks deeper and deeper into depression? Meanwhile, people returning from quarantine countries can easily lie about where they've been and not-self isolate - yet another unenforceable policy. Ditto those who are contact traced and asked to isolate but don't.

Was supportive of lockdown in March but looking at the Sweden model and their outcomes and now think this is the only way to go now. People don't like following stupid/inconsistent rules and won't comply for whatever reasons. The erosion of our ability to make our own choices is not good - we are being infantilised. Not to mention the strategy of always presenting the worst-case or poor outcome scenario is wearing thin.

SBTLove · 23/09/2020 11:25

@Arkadia
I don’t live in a parallel universe, I’ve no issue with how it’s been managed in Scotland. You really need to reel in your bitterness, if NS hadn’t faced the press or done any briefings she’d still be vilified, I’d rather a leader willing to answer to ppl than one that hides and lies.

Callisto1 · 23/09/2020 11:41

The second wave in winter has been talked about since probably March. It isn't a surprise. The exponential rise means that low levels only buy you time, then restrictions have to follow so we don't get overwhelmed.

We could probably argue endlessly what those restrictions have to be but ultimately we can't mix very much. Individually people could probably get away with seeing a couple of friends, going to work, school and visiting their mum indoors, but if all 5.5 million do it we will end up with another lockdown like in March.

I really really struggled then and as much as I enjoy visiting friends I am willing to sacrifice it so we don't have to shut schools again.

Callisto1 · 23/09/2020 11:45

And even in a cafe you can only meet one other household. And the reason they don't shut hospitality is that they have nothing to give all the unemployment people that would create, apart from measly benefits. Do we really want to put people onto benefits because we as adults can't follow some simple rules?

Stressedmummyof4 · 23/09/2020 11:50

@SBTLove exactly my sentiments too she's in the firing line no matter what she does. She can't win. I for one am proud of how she has been through it all especially with compassion. I'd like to see some of these people who run her into the ground every given chance do a better job!
