Any appetite for a continuance or have I missed the new thread?
There was quite a heated squabble respectful exchange of views so I am sure there is more to be said......

Catalan Independence referendum in September?

I hadn't realised one was actually on the cards.

It would be 'illegal' in the sense that the Spanish government won't endorse it, but it may go ahead anyway.

Once again - it's virtually a 50/50 split:

"Separatist sentiment has surged in recent years in Spain's industrialised north east region of Catalonia, where the Catalan language is spoken along with Spanish. Polls consistently show the 7.5 million Catalans are equally divided on independence but a majority supports a referendum. The pro-independence camp has mounted huge rallies in recent years."

The Catalan government pledges to hold an independence referendum by September.

Rally held in Madrid this weekend by pro-unionists being widely reported.

I'm quite annoyed by Patrick Harvie and the Greens support for the SNP in this. Their manifesto clearly stated they would give support if it was the will of the Scottish people. On the face of it that is fair enough but Given that hasn't been shown, they are breaking their own manifesto.
It'll be conservative and Lib dem for me at the local elections.

NoLotteryWinYet · 20/03/2017 13:17

how are the greens measuring the will of the people according to their manifesto bejazzled? Much as I support environmental causes, this sounds like exactly the sort of woolly thinking that'd make me avoid voting green. fontella not quite the RW press talking up trouble in other EU nation-states then? Not likely to make Spain feel all glowy about softening their stance on speeding Scotland's EU membership.

trixymalixy · 20/03/2017 13:29

I have quite often in the past voted green. Never again. I have lost all respect for them.

My friend who was a no voter had a really difficult time trying to decide whether to vote green given their stance on independence. She decided to vote for them and is now furious that they are going against what they said in their manifesto.

Gighasmokedhalibutisawesome · 20/03/2017 13:57

Surely it should also be the informed will of the people, also.

I wonder if the Catalan separatists are better informed or if it is romanticism at play. (Goes off to read up)

With 50/50 splits everywhere (give or take) could be qualified/cut by those voters who are in possession of sufficient facts to make an informed decision. Much much lower, I suspect, and a lot of tactical voting too which means even less commitment to the other policies of the vote recipient. (I have no illusions of the EU but was a remoaner against UKIP)

This is why the Brexit ramifications are seismic and we are leaping over scraps of information as they are drip fed.

If we announce one large trade deal with ROW the needle will swing in support of TM. Another hoohah on immigration policy not being what was expected or signs of any shilly-shallying and back it will go. We are going to cling to any politician that says or does something sensible like they are the Messiah. Fun for the opinion pollsters.

Its going to be a long year and beyond.

Is it worth it? With limited public support in scotland it is a recipe for war.

Fontella · 20/03/2017 23:26

I'm sorry but this has to be the worst SNP speaker I've heard yet!

She's dreadful!

WhatWouldKeanuDo · 20/03/2017 23:29

"Lake"

" Loch, Gordon.."

Fontella · 20/03/2017 23:33

*"Lake"

" Loch, Gordon.."*

Yes - I think that shows the mindset ... but her ramblings after that - just inane.

As my other half would say - she could put a glass eye to sleep!

WhatWouldKeanuDo · 20/03/2017 23:37

There is only one lake in Scotland and that's the Lake of Menteith.

(I have been indoctrinated, what's happened to Gordon?) ..Joke alert..

NoLotteryWinYet · 21/03/2017 07:13

Hilarious - couldn't make a point clearly if her life depended on it. At least she was trying to engage with debate though even if she displayed no understanding, so a cut above some of their usual reps :)

NoLotteryWinYet · 21/03/2017 07:18

I would like to see the SNP reply to the clearly held views that Scotland can't afford to leave!

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 21/03/2017 08:23

Fiona Heslop's doing a great job for the unionists. Unable to give a sensible reason for their proposed timing (and even she seemed to concede that we will only know transitional arrangements in 18 months time), then starts rambling about a completely unrelated issue!

She gave an entertaining interview a while back as well, when she was asked when the results of listening exercise would be published (she didn't have a clue).

Nyx · 21/03/2017 08:23

I will reply to it later today if nobody else has (going to a funeral so will be off line most of the day).

Nyx · 21/03/2017 08:23

That was to nolottery

Thegruffalowswife · 21/03/2017 08:25

Sorry I am pissing myself watching that interview above.

She takes the Biscuit She really does hahahaha!

Thegruffalowswife · 21/03/2017 08:28

How dare you use your dirty english word for a loch by accident gordon...

She just looks like a dick.

Thegruffalowswife · 21/03/2017 08:39

Thanks for the Australian view fontinella...

God I'm surprised they noticed us, but what they are saying makes a sense.

Nyx · 21/03/2017 08:43

"I'm surprised they noticed us" Hmm

QueenLaBeefah · 21/03/2017 08:44

My god Hsylop can barely string a coherent sentence together. What a car crash of an interview.

I've notice that SNP politicians have stopped saying "settled will of the Scottish people" and changed it for "settled will of the Scottish parliament". I think the 200,000 signatures on the anti independence referendum have clearly rattled them.

It's a pro-independence site but each claim is referenced.

Nyx · 21/03/2017 08:45

Is that the petition where apparently SNP politicians have each signed hundreds of times? Grin
