In despair. Absolutely in despair. Do we have to go through this again? And with such a long lead up to the referendum? Really? What happened to the settled will of the Scottish people?

@statisticallychallenged Will you help me get through this again? (Was Roseformeplease then).

NoLottery I agree a crossparty approach would have been a good idea straight after the Referendum. However if it is being proposed by the Remain MPs on both sides (eg Heidi Allen and Yvette Cooper) then I think most would question their motives.

That said I think David Davis plus Keir Starmer would be a winning negotiating team. DD is all big picture and KS does boring into submission in legalistic nonsense far better than any EU bureaucrat I have heard.

StatisticallyChallenged · 11/06/2017 14:12

I totally agree something of this significance warrants a cross party working group. The referendum was fairly cross party after all.

NoLotteryWinYet · 11/06/2017 14:28

Whatever the motives of our delightful pols, I agree people across parties support Brexit, and we've got various eu talent across all parties too. It's a damn shame Clegg is not involved now, for example - this affects everyone in Britain.

Something else Corbyn has called wrongly, aside from the farce of the contradiction of being pro managed migration AND the single market.

flippinada · 11/06/2017 20:40

Completely agree that a cross party approach to Brexit is needed.

Arkadia · 11/06/2017 21:14

But who's going to tell Corbyn that you cannot have a soft brevet AND control immigration?
(And someone remind Tory HQ that at the next election they could actually talk about Brexit AND immigration before the issue flares up again and goes out of control AGAIN)

Beebeeeight · 11/06/2017 22:00

Grow up and take responsibility for your vote.

'Nicola made me do it' is something I'd expect a 6 year old to say.

StatisticallyChallenged · 11/06/2017 22:11

Sigh

Your discourse level would insult my 7 year old.

1: I didn't vote Tory so I have no Tory vote to take responsibility for
2: Unless they were committing electoral fraud, nobody who voted for the Tories also voted for the DUP.
3: The SNP are absolutely obsessed with constitutional issues
4: When making a decision on who to vote for most people consider the policies of all of the (major) parties. For many people in Scotland, independence is a major policy issue to consider
5: Nicole has been pushing for a second independence referendum almost since the last one was counted. This has ramped up since the EU referendum. Most people in Scotland are opposed to this
6: This caused many people for whom this issue was important to vote for the party they perceived would oppose this. The Tories were the strongest on this, especially after the revelations about Kezia shortly before the election.

So yes, Nicola's actions undoubtedly DID cause people to vote Tory. Push and pull effects; her policies pushed people towards the Tories and away from SNP.

Losing 21 seats is very much the fault of the SNP and their policies and approach. The Tories have had their strongest results in over 30 years in Scotland - do you really think that's because every person who voted Tory is a raging right wing unionist nutter?

I suspect you're of the cybernat, "every no voter is a right wing Tory voting bastard who doesn't care about the poor" variety though so somewhat lacking in awareness.

flippinada · 11/06/2017 22:14

Out of the mouths of the voters themselves:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/jun/10/alex-salmond-nicola-sturgeon-snp-conservatives-scottish-independence

The first paragraph is rather revealing.

flippinada · 11/06/2017 22:26

@Statistically true story - a good friend of mine, who is self employed, put up a post on social media saying she was voting Labour. An SNP supporting client of hers (not a friend - the only relationship they have us professional) actually texted her to say how dare she and the SNP were the only choice for Scotland.

StatisticallyChallenged · 11/06/2017 22:41

I'd love to say I'm surprised @flippinada...but I'm so not!

flippinada · 11/06/2017 23:01

I know. I think she was quite blindsided by the sheer rudeness.

To be clear though, I don't think all or even most SNP voters are like this. I tend to the - perhaps optimistic - view that most folk consider their vote very carefully, trying hard to strike a balance between their personal values and what they think will be of most benefit to the country.

However, there is a core of supporters who are remarkably unpleasant and epitomise everything that is wrong with nationalism.

StatisticallyChallenged · 11/06/2017 23:08

Ah, but we're not allowed to equate all nationalists with those - however it's perfectly OK to equate all No voters with the DUP and Orange Order. Because if you share a view on one particular thing...

flippinada · 11/06/2017 23:10

Yes, I have noted the irony Wink

trixymalixy · 22/06/2017 09:17

"Nicky Sturgeon puppy surgeon" Irvine Welsh does have a way with words!

Looks like the SNP voting with the Tories to bring back tail docking has gone down well then. Lots of nats up in arms about it on twitter some talking about cancelling their membership. Let's hope the fall from grace continues!

morningtoncrescent62 · 23/06/2017 16:36

I don't quite know how to ask this without it coming across as goady, but I'm genuinely interested in how no-voters who tactically voted Tory feel about the outcome now that we know a bit more about it, e.g. Queen's speech, DUP deal etc. I'm a leftie no-voter so I voted Labour (who came a good second in my constituency and reduced the SNP majority considerably) but I know lots of folk on this thread were going to vote Conservative because it was their best chance to oust the SNP. So if you did that, what are your views on how it's all panning out?

NoLotteryWinYet · 23/06/2017 17:00

I'm fine with it - this coalition won't last long and I'm hoping Corbyn will drop some of his worst policies before the next election. I'm more moderate than anything else though and would've preferred the tories to Corbyn.

WaxOnFeckOff · 23/06/2017 18:09

I'm fine with it too, it's a means to an end but then, I'm not a Corbyn fan either so I was a total floating voter this time.

trixymalixy · 24/06/2017 08:57

I didn't actually vote Tory in the end, but it was really 50/50 whether I voted Tory or labour to try and keep the snp out.

I'm quite happy with the results of the election given that the only outcome that would have pleased me would have been a lib dem victory which was never going to happen. SNP got their wings clipped, the tories also got their wings clipped and seem to have dropped a lot of the worst bits of their manifesto. A Tory landslide would have been seen as a mandate for hard Brexit so I'm glad they didn't get one.

Not overly keen on the DUP, but only because of the potential for reigniting trouble in NI. I'm glad in a way that the tories are still having to deal with Brexit, hopefully it'll mean their popularity will continue to plummet.

I'd rather Corbyn had gone though. All the day of rage nonsense and calling on people to march against the government has really turned me off, plus he's pro Brexit . I wouldn't have been happy if he'd won the election either and an snp/lab coalition would have been the worst possible scenario for me.

Tomorrowisanewday · 25/06/2017 23:21

In the end, i couldn't bring myself to vote tory (our constituency had been snp for 16 years, but the only opposition is tory), so voted libdem. Hated doing it, our SNP mp had been a good mp for the constituency rather than SNP, and is a genuinely decent man, but my vote was to stop another referendum. Tories got in, which makes me feel ill, but our country needs stability, and this will hopefully stop the poison dwarf
