In despair. Absolutely in despair. Do we have to go through this again? And with such a long lead up to the referendum? Really? What happened to the settled will of the Scottish people?

@statisticallychallenged Will you help me get through this again? (Was Roseformeplease then).

Anyone think the exit poll, SNP huge losses, accords with the feeling in their own constituency?

Yes. I've voted for an snp candidate for 16 years - not because I have any desire for independence, but because he's a very, very decent man who works for the constituency. I voted against him today, which didn't sit well, but mainly because I can't go through another indyref. Say what they like, this election was about independence for snp, and many people I've spoken to have said the same. Hopefully the results will mirror the polls

Salmond.....gone

Robertson......gone.

A hung parliament might bring all sorts of uncertainties. But, oh, it is so, so sweet (and I voted LibDem!)

I'm delighted the SNP have lost seats however I'll sit back now and watch them blame everything but their obsession with independence for it - vote rigging, Westmonster, blah blah. They needed to lose a lot more for it to be hammered home I think.

Just looked back to comment I made at about 8.30 am on 1st April Grin on another thread
' I think that there will be a Tory resurgence in Scotland as the people who don't want another referendum look at consolidating. And I will put that Tory resurgence directly at NS's feet.'

And the two posters who commented directly after:
I think that there will be a Tory resurgence in Scotland
That's so funny.

And:
I think that there will be a Tory resurgence in Scotland
That's so funny.
It's so cute when people post on MN after smoking crack. smile

Anyway, I'm actually quite happy with the result - SNP, although still the largest party and with a majority, have had a bit of a drubbing at the hands of the Conservatives, and the UK as a whole does not have a Conservative majority govt. So a sort of win/win.

I wonder if there will be calls for NS to resign. I do hope so.

I really hope she recognises the result as a wholehearted rejection of another independence referendum.

I'm not surprised the SNP lost seats, but I am surprised by how many. I think it shows the strength of feeling regarding Indyref 2.

Hopefully it will now be kicked into the long grass.

Fingers crossed, @flippinada. They have lost a big percentage of their previous vote, a lot of seats and some very big hitters - even though Nicola is spinning it to the best of her ability, privately she must know that this is a clear message from the Scottish electorate that the SNP and their obsession with IndyRef2 should get tae fuck.

It's not just the ones they actually lost - there were several others where a few votes the other way and they would have lost those too. It could have been absolute carnage - but losing 22 seats is pretty good!

Grin

Best bit for me was seeing smirky McSmirky face Salmond lose his seat.

Well done Scotland. It's great too that all three other parties picked up seats - so you've got a real mix instead of a one party state.

Having had a closer look at the results Fontanella I agree.

I'm not entirely convinced that the Tory resurgence will last, but we'll see.

Statistically Scots swear words are very evocative aren't they?

My own observations on today:

  1. Went to bed early expecting Tory majority. Woke up, saw the result and shouted 'BLOODY HELL, Hung Parliament!', occasioning a sleepy 'are you all right mum?' from my DS.

  1. Trying to explain a hung parliament to my DS

  1. The National's front page - oh dear.

  1. Predictable cybernat response on social media - apparently all Tory voters in Scotland are evil stupid bastards who voted that way because Kezia Dugdale and Scottish Labour (evil personified, apparently) told them to. Who knew she had so much power and influence? Oh, and apparently she should be sacked...because of course that's going to happen when Scottish Labour have increased their share of the vote and done much better than expected.

The tone of nasty unionism in these posts will fit in perfectly with your new DUP bedfellows.

Didn't want a 'right wing' party who are 'obsessed with the constitution'? Well that's exactly what you've just voted for.

Report
StatisticallyChallenged · 11/06/2017 10:10

I'm fairly sure none of us voted for the dup...some voted conservative and whilst I'm no lover of them their policies and beliefs in many areas are quite dramatically different to those of the DUP.

And not every No voter is a right wing Tory but it suits your own narrative to pretend they are all nasty evil gits. Maybe take a look at what some of your nationalist bedfellows spout before calling us nasty...

Report
StatisticallyChallenged · 11/06/2017 10:21

Oh and as for obsessed with the constitution, don't make me laugh. If snp had accepted the result of the referendum and got on with running the damn country rather than pushing for indyref 2 constantly then we probably wouldn't have a Tory government right now as they wouldn't have lost so many seats to them.

Those extra 12 seats in Scotland made it possible for the Tories to remain in power and I have no doubt that the reason they won them is in significant part due to opposition to the second referendum. You want to blame someone for the current situation? Try looking in Bute House.

Report
bathshebaneverdene · 11/06/2017 10:30

The person responsible for the Conservative resurgence in Scotland is Nicola Sturgeon with her hubristic insistence on Indyref 2. She is behaving in exactly the same was as Theresa May - no other way but hers.

Report
flippinada · 11/06/2017 10:36

Yes yes we're all evil right wingers and everyone who doesn't vote SNP hates Scotland. Except that isn't true. I actually voted Labour, who at present are arguably more left wing than the SNP.

If your want someone to blame, as Statistically says, look closer to home.

The SNP need to do miles better on education too - Davidson's party got my vote because she's been great at holding the SNP to account on domestic issues, as well as independence.

The SNP support would like to characterise the conservative resurgence as all about independence but that's doing the Scottish conservatives a disservice, the criticisms of the SNP in govt are about more than independence, although that's a good place to start!

Report
flippinada · 11/06/2017 13:04

That's true NoLottery. It's not just about independence, although I think that was a significant factor.

Am I the only one that thinks a cross-party approach to implementing Brexit (or any referendum) was a great idea? Too bad Corbyn didn't go for it.
