Partner going away with attractive 22 year old girl. Is it a bit weird or am I just being jealous/insecure.

Just that really! For context he’s 43, and self employed so it’s a work trip that he’s organised himself. It’s long haul and they will be away for a few weeks. She works for him at his house everyday mon-Fri, they are set up in his dining room. Desks next to eachother. We don’t live together.

The whole thing is making me feel a bit weird but I’m not sure why! I know if I try to talk to him about it it will just go round in circles and will just result in me feeling like a terrible person/jealous insecure girlfriend. He sees the trip as essential to the business, I don’t want to be accused of being unsupportive as I do support him massively.

just wondered how others would potentially feel about this situation? Am I being an absolute areshole girlfriend?

I’m gobsmacked by all of this. He’s massively playing you. Get rid. You deserve so much better. Or blessed singledom.

The freedom to make your own choices without being held back by anyone else's bullshit is indeed "blessed".

What does he positively add to your life @cheeseandhamtoastie42 ?

PoisedgirlCrab · 18/09/2026 18:44

I wouldn't like this sounds a bit sus tbh think he's likely cheating or close to it

Are you a 40 yo man??

Loads of young women have relationships/marry men in their 40s…. and even older, particularly if they’ve got a few bob!

Or act like they have a few bob like this man is doing! sounds like he hasn't a bean but is desperately trying to project a successful globetrotting business owner image.

@foursquares sounds like you've never come across age gap relationship between an older man and a younger woman? most of them start in the workplace I would say.

@cheeseandhamtoastie42 sounds like he's grooming this woman, giving her a job in his near-bankrupt 'business', taking her away long haul, presumably to try and impress her and get her alone and in holiday mode. Poor 22 year old.

safetyfreak · 18/09/2026 19:31

He sounds like a creep, I hope the young lady has her wits about her and doesn't feel pressured into having sex.

Seriestwo · 18/09/2026 19:38

He’s arguing with you because you’re unsupportive of his bad business sense?

silly man.

Anonbakerylady · 18/09/2026 19:47

Do you ever stay at his house or does he always come to you? You say he is private about his life, have you met his friends and family? Do you have him on social media? Does he answer his phone to you most of the time?

The reason I ask is, are you sure you are not the OW here? The whole thing sounds like an elaborate plot to keep a live in partner who works from home hidden in plain sight. It sounds like they are going on a couple's holiday.

I occasionally stay at his. He’s weird about his friends, very protective so only met a couple of them. One of them (his best friend) didn’t know my name. I’ve met his parents once.

For context we’ve been together nearly 4 years.

@cheeseandhamtoastie42 from what you say, your idea of ‘together’ needs rethinking. But hey, you obviously get something out of this……relationship. Not sure what though.

That seems very odd for such a long term relationship. Do you have him on social media? Did you meet the parents and friend before this girl was on the scene? How often would you say you stay at his?

Even if you are his only partner (which I doubt) I'm sorry to say that it doesn't sound like he cares for you all that much.

Someone up thread asked me what I get out of the relationship and tbh I’m not sure. The responses were this post have certainly been a massive wake up call….

He works very hard to keep me and his friends separate so I’ve given up. Met his parents once about a year ago. No suggestion to meet them again since.

Meeting parents once in 4 years and keeping you separate from his friends?? Whether or not you are his only 'partner' he definitely doesn't see anything long term with you. Otherwise there would be much more effort to integrate you in his life. Obviously you may not have long term intentions too, but hopefully your eyes have been opened a bit on this thread and you can make an informed decision on how to move forwards

I'm baffled as to why you think he's your partner. It's sounds like at most you're his main squeeze.

They’ve been well and truly opened. Honestly the friends situation is so weird, it’s a whole other story that won’t go into. But yeah not how a ‘partner’ should behave.

Op I must have commented on this early on as it’s in my watch list. Now I’ve come back and seen how this has evolved I’m like 🤯 This guy is full of absolute shit! What a weird situation he’s phased you into. It reminds me of a frog being slowly boiled, you being the frog. He’s probably in eye watering debt, you’re a complete secret. How did he introduce you to people. Did he even use the word girlfriend? Are you in his social media posts or anything where people might see you together? Either way he’s an absolute wideo and you need to run away. Wow!

Sounds like my ex. Said he was a very private person. He was not he was just hedging his bets elsewhere. You deserve much better op. Let him go and fail miserably at his 'web designing' and concentrate on your own life instead.

Anonbakerylady · 18/09/2026 21:50

I'm so sorry OP, you sound like a lovely, caring person and you deserve so much better.

I suspect turning up at his house when he is supposedly working with this woman would tell you everything you need to know. Personally I would recommend just dumping him, he sounds an absolute mess.

ElusiveSunshine · 18/09/2026 11:31

Hi OP, I think it’s good you posted on here as it sounds like getting other perspectives on this has been helpful in trying to make sense of both the weird work situation and a chance to evaluate the relationship.

Only you truly know if he’s a keeper and whether you can trust him. He could be up to no good and you will have absolutely dodged a bullet in exiting now, but on the other hand his actions and behaviours may be bourne out of stress and inadequacy re his business and trying to keep it afloat. He may be panicking if the ground is disappearing from under his feet and he is facing failure, redundancy (bankruptcy?), mounting debts, lost home, losing you his gf. Total life implosion basically.

If it’s ok I’d like to suggest a best and worst case scenario here. Firstly in a best case scenario (and I mean the absence of nefarious motivations) there is no romantic interest or involvement with the young employee and it is just a work employee relationship. Your bf (in his head at least) may believe he needs this trip to try and rescue his business and pull it back from the brink. Secure contacts, revenue streams etc and save it from folding. In his shoes in this case, and particularly as you mention a string of failed relationships, marriages and trauma this man will already have a failure complex. High stress can impair rational decision making. Desperate, scared as sh*t people don’t make the best rational decisions and can act in odd ways. From what you’ve described he could be acting out of desperation. Even employing someone when he has no means to afford them if the business is struggling sounds like an act of desperation. Clutching at straws and not good business sense - irrational. Web designers have inputted on here that overseas trips are totally unnecessary and door knocking does not work so he’s not got his head in the game. If this is the case (with everything above board re the work employee dynamic) he is probably stressed out of his head at the prospect of losing his business (which he is making poor decisions about) and losing you too. Simultaneously failing at another relationship and losing his job, home etc.

You mention his lack of communication with you and some people can be really prone to bottling. It can be down to personality trait or bottling as a stress response and in my experience I’ve found the usual reasons for bottling are a) can’t handle the situation emotionally (overwhelm), b) don’t want to saddle partner with the worry so ‘keep things to themselves’ as a perceived protective measure, c) don’t want to lose face with their partner. This extends outwards to family, partner’s family, friends, professionally etc. He may be heading for a breakdown and not talking to you is a (crap) coping mechanism. In this scenario he may be scared to talk to you about it fearing you will dump him and then he will alone as his life and business implodes. Shutting out a loving supportive partner can a red flag preceding mental breakdown. He probably hasn’t twigged the damage this is all causing you and your relationship. In his head he may be trying to ‘shield’ you from the stress of the situation. It may be why he wants to get away, to detach and escape, it doesn’t help but desperate people can detach themselves in high stress and retreat into escapism.
Sorry that was rather long! But when you start to look at the pieces and take the information you described and give your partner the benefit of doubt (re: being involved with his employee) it could be a case of the ship going down and he’s in panic mode.

Worst case scenario he’s cheating and/or intending to cheat. Imo they may as well be one and the same. I don’t need to re state the plentiful advice on here in this case if this is what’s happening. It’s great your life is good and independent outside of the relationship, you sound very kind and strong 💪

In your shoes I would want to talk to him before he goes away and assess. 3 weeks radio silence would be awful for your mental health! As tempting as it is, I wouldn’t lead with the whole suspicions on the the employee and his possible motivations, as inappropriate as it is to go away on a solo with her(!). As hard as it is I would try and give him the benefit of the doubt first and see if you can get him to open up about what’s is going on. If he is bottling/ not coping try leading with you are concerned and want to understand what’s going on with him and lack of communication is not healthy for your relationship. See what you get back and let us know how you get on lovely, there will be support for you on here whatever the outcome 🌸 *edit for typos

Thank you for your thoughtful reply 🥰 unfortunately none of this behaviour is new for him so can’t be blamed on stress. I know how manipulative he can be and he’s ’sewing the seed’ about the business trip. Ie. If he paints a picture of how dire things are I won’t object. He’s done it many times before. Not sure why as I don’t object to his travel plans, I guess this time is different. He doesn’t have clients in the country where he’s planning to travel to he’s literally there to try to drum up business, but who knows.

you’re right though, I’m glad I posted on here as I always question whether I have ‘the right’ to be upset or if I’m being completely unreasonable. Seems people’s thoughts are fairly unanimous.

4 years and his best friend didn't know your name?
Really?
You are being deliberately kept from something.
You have wasted 4 years on him.
It really is unbelievable that you cannot see how determined he is to keep you tucked away.
What a waste of your life.

turnthefanonpls · 18/09/2026 22:30

With a web design profession, There is no need for travel really because the clue is in the name of- ‘web’. Pretty much all of the networking can be done online. And if it’s Asia, they have people skilled in Web design who will charge a lot less than Western countries. So he is chatting a whole lot of crap in my opinion! Of course there is the other chance that he is being genuine, but it certainly doesn’t sound like it. No struggling company that isn’t turning a profit would go on a long haul for 2 to 3 weeks, Let alone bring another employee along as well and incur double the cost. I think you should call his bluff and say you’re going to come along for some of the time. You’d have to pay for the air flights If he’s not willing to, but if he has his own room, which, I would hope he does, the accommodation would be free.

Imbusytodaysorry · 18/09/2026 22:31

@cheeseandhamtoastie42 i asked earlier what you are getting from this .
Can I ask do you give him money/loans ?
Either say could he be telling you he needs to go bankrupt be his way to get sympathy and you help him out?
What do you plan to do ? After all the advice you have been given

He doesn't have clients in the country he's going to and he doesn't speak the language and he thinks ANYONE will hire him as a web designer?

I'm just scanning mentally to see if there are any countries on earth that don't already have web designers who are fluent in the local language or languages.

Scan complete: nope.
