He's definitely restarted the affair

2 years ago my husband had an affair and we reconciled. All was going well. He left his job for a bit and then had to go back. In March he went on a trip where she was, first time since. He came back off. I suspected, he denied. Then he said he hasn't been happy, rhe effort of dealing with my triggers from the affair was too much. He was worn out. He was planning to stay until after my hysterectomy this week and then move out. Since then its been a roller coaster. Warm some days, cold the next. In amongst it i filed for divorce. Some days he wanted to try and some days he was like an imposter in my husbands body. Over and over I asked about her he said he wasn't talking to her.
Today I got forwarded messages between them from her husband. He's been at it again.
He says he wasn't cheating, he'd already decided it was over between us he wouldn't tell me so I'd let him look after me and rhe kids through my surgery.
So now I know. I already suspected it shouldn't be a shock. I'd already said ir was over but I suppose some part of me was hanging on.
No point to this really except maybe to warn others and to get a bit or a handhold as this feels bloody unbearable.

He was hoping he could justify his affair by you punishing him and him repenting and then coming back and that would wipe the slate clean. He’d be forgiven and he would have paid his penance. The other woman's marriage would be collateral damage because <obviously> it’s more important that he keeps his family together. He’s completely self absorbed and quite miffed he isn’t going to come out of this looking anything better than the utter snake he is. The fact that you’re not following his script as he had planned in his head has completely thrown him. He’s delulu but he’s not got mental health problems.

I’d go as far as to say to expect his affair partner coming over to his house at some point soon as he’s definitely kept her on the back burner and she’s blown up her life so badly she probably feels like she has to give this ‘great love affair’ a chance. If she goes she’s also crackers.

Just keep on as you are, you’re doing really great.

Thewookiemustgo · 23/08/2026 18:19

He’s sorry alright, very sorry for himself. He can’t deal with what he now has to face: he’s responsible for trashing his own life and knowing deep down, rising to the surface every day, that there’s nobody to blame but him. His bad amateur dramatics are all to try to induce pity and possibly guilt from you, to try to get his own way. He’s desperate for you to validate his feelings and take on it all.
He probably chased OW for validation because he’s so awful at managing emotions and feeling empathy or compassion himself, when he feels bad he reaches for the easiest fix: validation elsewhere. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if OW is getting the same treatment now: he’s so sorry, made a terrible mistake, misses her etc etc so that he can get one of you to validate his feelings and comfort him. Woefully inadequate at managing his own feelings and understanding the feelings of others. I think it’s a pattern in men who cheat, I honestly do. It’s rarely as simple to me as just wanting sex elsewhere.
He still has no idea how to cope with his new situation. Be civil but grey rock the Act I Scene I stuff. Pathetic!

🤣 this is just what I needed to see! Thank you!

He’s fine he’s just a complete dick. You are doing great OP. Crack on. What a twat he is.

Meteorite87 · 23/08/2026 19:14

He wasn't bothered about your broken heart @Allthegoodonesareg0ne when he was having each affair, yet you are supposed to have sympathy for him now?
Does not compute.

I completely agree. I think cheating is a band aid for uncomfortable feelings and feelings of failure. Add in a sense of entitlement and ego and its easy to see rhe solution to feeling that you're failing is to find someone who tells you that you aren't.

One of the hardest things for me (and I think probably for all empathetic partners of cheaters) is that we can see that they aren't monsters, just human beings with poor coping skills. We can also see that their intent was to make themselves feel better, not to destroy their partners.

Some do manage to address the underlying issue of course and recognise that intent doesn't negate the actual damage. A starting point to become safe partners.

Obviously my stbx hasnt 😆. He's still stuck at woe is me, my minimal effort wasn't enough to stop you making me feel like a failure for the actions I chose to take therefore I must scramble around for other external reasons and solutions.

I had to point out to him today that after all he's put me through I essentially had a choice between spending forever feeling sorry myself, continuing not eating and sleeping (or worse,up entirely) or picking myself up, dusting myself off and getting on with life. I chose the latter for me and the kids, despite the pain he caused us all. And yet here he was making it all about him again, vomming in a Bush because he couldn't handle where we've all landed after his repeated grenades. That I'm only entertaining other men because he chose to throw our marriage away. But here he is again, woe is him.

I simply don't have the energy left for him, it's going into me and the kids. I'm sure he'll get what he needs from someone else soon enough and God help her!

Validation Vampire. He’ll suck the life and approval out of the next woman willing to validate him, rinse and repeat. If the penny doesn’t drop for him now I don’t think it ever will, sadly this hasn’t been the catalyst for change from him and any change now is too late. I’m so sorry you’ve been through all this @Allthegoodonesareg0ne and whilst you’ve handled it all brilliantly, you’ve no doubt been through absolute hell to get here. Betrayal is hell, reconciliation is hard, ending a marriage is hard. False reconciliation is a hell all of its own. You’re an inspiration, you truly are. Women like you shouldn’t have to go through shit like this, I can’t believe he threw it all away for nonsense like that when he had a woman like you.
You deserve all the happiness that will come your way now.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 23/08/2026 22:28

He said I've broken his heart, can't believe I've moved so quick he must have meant nothing to me .

Bloody hell, how could he say that without a shred of reflection on his own world class hypocrisy?

Rosegard · 23/08/2026 23:12

He's a bullshitter.
He has just realised that his life was much more comfortable living with you who ran around after him.

He absolutely cannot bear the consequences of his choices and is having a full on melt down.

I have had a few friends who had variations similar to your arsehole husband.
All nice clever women that had bent themselves out of shape too.

15+years on from their shit show marriages that they were devastated upon losing, their enduring emotional is one of pure mortification.

They now see clearly what posters can see.

He's a total mortifying cringe fest.
You really are so well rid of him.

Please do not allow him to use you as a crutch.
Be ruthless.
He will use you if he can.
Cut him off completely.
Don't be too quick to talk about his MH with people.
HE ended the marriage.
Far better to use the narrative that HE ended the marriage, and that you respect his decision and are doing your best to do likewise.
No discussion.

kellygoeswest · 24/08/2026 09:38

I just want to say the way you're handling this is amazing, you should be really proud of your strength.

He's a selfish man and he's trying really hard to manipulate you, he's only "sick" because for the first time in a long time, he's not getting his own way, and he is having to live with the consequences of his own choices and actions.

Charlenedickens · 24/08/2026 11:42

yeah and he’s likely going to have to live his new life with a lot less money than he anticipated if the disclosure is done. Much better to be at home and shag around than this,

HazelBite · 24/08/2026 14:14

You do realise OP that he is only upset because you have stopped visibly "suffering" and seem to not need his insufferable input into your life, he is now utterly redundant!!
Poor man!

LastOnePlease · 24/08/2026 14:52

What's most insulting, to me, is that he has attributed your renewed confidence, rediscovery of yourself and prioritisation of your own needs as being purely down to a new man. Suggesting that the changes he's seen in you could of course ONLY be because some man is on the scene rather than coming from you feeling free and slowly becoming yourself again. What a misogynistic idiot.

Completely this. The idea that another man must be the cause of her wellbeing. Twat.

My ex was the same, and I wasnt even seeing anyone!

I couldnt possibly be happy just because I was more secure and content without him than I had been in years, no it could only have been because I was with a man!
