BIL Text Me In Error-he is having an affair?

Robertsmithsnan · 24/02/2026 06:48

I sent my BIL a message last week, my name starts with R.
Received a message at 7am, “R, you are the light of my life, I love you with all my heart”
He sent this to me by mistake.
The “R” person is someone he works with. What do I do?

Tell his wife.

Olderandwiserpossibly · 24/02/2026 08:53

You say he sent you this message in error last week OP.
What did you do when you received it? Surely you can't have done nothing?

I hope you asked him about it . And I hope youtalked to his wife about it. I can't see an innocent explanation because expressing that level of affection for a work colleague can never be acceptable.

Random321 · 24/02/2026 08:54

It doesn't read authentically at all unless he's a very strange guy.

I would wait for an explanation before jumping to conclusions. Althought those conclusions may not be wrong!

Oof

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 24/02/2026 09:05

If that was my sisters husband I would ring my sister right now and say she needs to sneaky get his phone and read the texts with that person. Not necessarily morally right but that’s my sister at the end of the day.

Wind up post 🚩?

Four pages and OP hasn’t been back to clarify or answer questions. I’d say yes, rage bait.

It could also be a joke message between colleagues if that’s the exact wording.

But we’re all thinking otherwise! He’s shagging someone else!

Miranda65 · 24/02/2026 09:18

Delete it immediately and don't get involved. This is not your problem to solve.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 24/02/2026 09:21

My sister in law received a text like this, once.
Her name begins with an A, and she said she often gets bum dialled.

She received the text on Christmas Day, and told him, i don’t think that was meant for me!

If a work colleague texted my personal phone saying ‘I love you’ for any reason I’d be quite unhappy. It’s not appropriate workplace conversation is it?

Depends on the workplace doesn't it? We're a small team and are friends outside of work, have worked together for many years/decades.

However BIL is related to you, tell your DH to protect your own marriage. You don't want there to be any misunderstandings down the line

Then send a message to BIL saying "I think you should talk to (wife's name) about that. It will be better coming from you, than us"

Flocke · 24/02/2026 09:34

I agree with others that it doesn’t really sound real. I don’t think that’s the type of message you just randomly send. Now say you were having an affair and they text to say “oh I don’t think you really care about me” he could reply with that message. But most people use their chats to reply rather than manually searching for and clicking on a name. So he would already be in and reading the chat and would reply. Unless he messages you a lot and your name is at the top of his chat list it would be unusual to message by accident. I guess he could be deleting messages from an “affair partner” as he goes. But then when he opened the chat he’d see it still has messages in it and wasn’t empty. The whole thing just doesn’t feel authentic to me.

OchreRaven · 24/02/2026 09:34

His message is so over the top it could have been an inappropriate joke? Like the colleague has helped him out by covering a shift or something and he’s gone OTT in his thanks to be funny?

fivepastmidnight · 24/02/2026 09:35

I would reply I don't think this was meant for me and copy his wife into the reply.

I wouldnt do anything for the moment…. wait and see if he realises his mistake and sends a follow up message.
Can you do a bit of discreet snooping to see if he is having an affair with “R” from work.

Steady on Colombo

rainbowstardrops · 24/02/2026 09:41

Did he put any kisses at the end of the message? Seems a bit of an odd thing to say if you’re having an affair. I’d expect something more along the lines of, ‘Been thinking about you all night and can’t wait to shag you at lunchtime’.

Weirdly my sister was once having an affair and she sent almost that exact message to me by mistake instead of to the affair partner.

gamerchick · 24/02/2026 09:56

Send one back saying I don't think this was meant for me.

You know what you need to do but give him a chance to speak up first.

She supposedly got the message at 7am but she posted at 6.48am. I think it's a wind-up too. Lots of things don't make sense here, including how sure she is it's someone he works with.
