The Rules:

  • The first rule about the dating thread is don't talk about it with people you're dating
  • Develop a thick skin
  • Do not invest emotionally too soon
  • It's all BS until it actually happens
  • Trust your gut instinct
  • People vanishing, lying & being generally weird is not your fault
  • Know your wortH
  • If it's not fun, stop
  • Loo update is mandatory
  • No dating the thread
  • Treat others as you'd like to be treated
  • Any relationship you have that could get ruined by having a conversation about your feelings, standards and/or expectations wasn't really stable enough to begin with
  • The things you choose to ignore/ tolerate now are the reasons you will break up in the future
  • OLD can get very time consuming. Keep doing other activities you enjoy

Optional: Please give your irons (potential dates you are talking to) nicknames like Mr Scottish. Initials are allowed (Mr S) when you are an item*

Hope everyone had a lovely, stress free Christmas!

Fireman was absent as per while he was away for Christmas, which I guess was fair. Been left on read again 😕 he's supposed to be coming round tomorrow night, place your bets on whether he actually turns up or not!

Left on read? I'm enraged on your behalf.

I'd be saying plan a proper date or do the other thing 😁

Ha thank you! I feel like a teenager having to bother about such things. He also added me on Instagram, just to add to the teenage vibe.

NervesOfCotton · 26/12/2025 17:08

Nosdacariad Christmas meeting! Sounds good, what are you doing?

Meeting in a pub half way 😁
I'm worried he won't like the look of me 🙃

NervesOfCotton · 26/12/2025 18:07

Nosdacariad I'm sure it will be fine! What are you going to wear?

Aw I'm absolutely positive he will! Keep us updated!

Nosdacariad · 26/12/2025 19:35

@CleanShirt thank you x

@NervesOfCotton very dark blue cropped 501s and a white shirt or a navy long sleeved t shirt I think but not sure about shoes. Loafers? Ballet flats? Ankle boots? Trainers?

The men of my acquaintance couldn't care less about clothes...

justsurvivingnotthriving · 26/12/2025 19:54

Sounds gorgeous @Nosdacariad! Ankle boots are the winner for me with Levi’s!

Cool, thanks 🙂 western or smart?

justsurvivingnotthriving · 26/12/2025 20:15

Depends. What colour top? And are your jeans blue?
I love western boots as I think they’re slimming on the leg. But it’s Xmas so it’s also perfectly acceptable to push the boat out on a smart boot!

Probably a white shirt.

It's cold so red fluffy cardigan or black coat.

NervesOfCotton · 26/12/2025 20:25

Nosdacariad Sounds great! I always go for a cardi over a coat & I'd live in my ankle boots if I couldGrin
I'd probably go for western, with that outfit.

Only slightly worried I'll look like the Union flag!!

Thanks @BeAppleNow You're a man, do you care about clothes?!

NervesOfCotton · 26/12/2025 21:31

Nosdacariad haha, maybe he will call you 'flag woman' (but in an affectionate way!)

Nosdacariad · 26/12/2025 21:40

We'll see 😅

Umm that’s a tricky one - I will say yes , I like to look smart - my ex was extremely well dressed at all times. - and would often say things like “ do you like this , it’s new.. “
so yes had to be clothes aware as she was always buying new outfits

Edited

I have NEVER had a man say anything other than what they thought they were supposed to say.

Though my friend Phil and I didn't speak for a while after I asked his opinion on a maths teacher and he said she shouldn't wear leather trousers at her age 👖👖👖

NervesOfCotton · 26/12/2025 22:19

I had an ex once tell me that I don't dress sexily enough & that the long sleeved skintight top & jeans that I had on were 'fine but you look like you are about 80 because you aren't showing any cleavage'.

Same one told me that 'Since you are nearly 30 you will have to stop wearing short skirts'.

On a date once I had a man say 'Aren't you cold? You make me feel cold' which made me feel a bit funny. I had a dress & cardigan on, bare legs & it was warm. I felt a bit self conscious about having my legs out for the rest of the date!

I went on a date once with a man whose first comment was ‘bit overdressed aren’t you’ - I was wearing a dress and trainers. Mind you he looked like he’d slept in a skip

At the other extreme I went on a first date with a man whose turned up wearing a suit and tie complete with matching pocket handkerchief - for a daytime cafe/bar date

Both dates were dreadful funnily enough

Oh that comment would have made me feel so self conscious!

I also had an afternoon date once where the man turned up in a full on suit & tie (& made me, in my nice dress & sparkly trainers, feel under dressed!) but I'd never say anything. He later said that he'd had to come straight from work & actually on our second date I again had a nice dress on & he looked really scruffyGrin

7.30am and I'm still left on read by the fireman... Going to have to get my big girl pants on, send a "still on for later" message than be sad when it doesn't happen. The rollercoaster is great isn't it?
