Just this, really, and why or why not?

I don't like them to be honest. If someone was amazing I'd be able to look past them but in my experience 9 times out of 10 tattoos, especially a lot of them seem to be a red flag for deeper seated issues. Just my experience.

Depends on where and what they are.

One of these would be fine by me...the other, absolutely not! I'll leave you to guess which is which 😂

This sums it up!

I’ll leave this here, just for you…

There is no inherent connection between having tattoos or piercings and being intelligent. Intelligence is a complex trait that is influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics, environment, and experiences. It is not determined by one's appearance or personal style choices.2 Jan 2023

Oh, did I also mention that I’ve got 11 GSCE’s, 4 A levels and a degree?

But, I lack intelligence because I have a couple of tattoos!!

I have noticed that quite often, people get a tattoo or maybe too, then another and another and so on.

A small shoulder/ wrist/ ankle tattoo can look quite attractive, but the more ink people have, the less attractive it often becomes. As well as fading, wrinkly skin with tattoos isn’t a good look imo.

I’ve had the same hairdresser for nearly three years. During that time, he’s had more and more tattoos, so both arms and legs are completely covered, as are his fingers.

I think it’s a problem if you don’t know when to stop and anything on the neck and face is off putting.

This is very often an objection to tattoos - the whole 'wrinkly skin' argument.

Is naked wrinkly skin somehow attractive, and inked wrinkly skin inherently not?

I don't think it makes any sense as a point, expect to say that if you don't like tattoos you'll still think they're shit on an old person.

But in and of itself, it doesn't really make sense.

AgnesX · 27/10/2024 16:59

Depends on where they were and the quality. I wouldn't entertain anyone with tattoos on their face or neck.

And your intelligence will continue to drop for each one you have.

You are also a thug, a chav, a criminal, mentally unwell, have deep rooted issues and are impulsive, reckless and unable to commit.

Apparently.

@SunsetSkylane it isn’t either or. I don’t mind a small tattoo on a shoulder, ankle, wrist etc. I think the heavy inking looks shit on anyone. But it’s an opinion, that’s all.

Wow. Do you have any evidence to quantify that statement?

It is quite clear in my post that this it is just my experience that men with lots of tattoos have issues. I did google for you and found this article https://psychcentral.com/news/2019/01/27/people-with-tattoos-more-likely-to-also-have-mental-health-issues so there appears to be some truth to my opinion, but again its just my personal view. There was also another study suggesting that people with tattoos were more impulsive and more likely to make short sighted decisions, again a personality type I would not vibe with.

I did also say that if someone with tattoos didn't have any serious issues then I'd be able to look past them, even though I have negative associations with them and do not find them attractive so I am not a bigot about it, I would just be on higher alert for certain issues in men with tattoos. Its a perfectly reasonable personal preference.

People With Tattoos More Likely to Also Have Mental Health Issues

A new study has discovered that people with tattoos were more likely to be diagnosed with mental health issues

So the question is would tattoos put you off dating someone and why.

Yep. No wonder Tattle takes the piss out of here. 🤣

Among the quite reasonable "I don't like them aesthetically", we have the fantastic mumsnet stereotypes.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 28/10/2024 21:20

I'm not into tattoos, but wouldn't automatically not like a guy if he had a couple of tattoos. It would completely depend on what they are.

If it's a horrid image that I don't like looking at, then yes, it would put me off. Why would I want to spend so much time looking at something I don't like? Things like devils, skulls, horror type images, naked women, etc...

If it was in inappropriate (to me) areas like the face, again, that would put me off.

Other tattoos I find can look quite good, even for a non tattoo lover like me.

The 'makes you look poor' thing makes me laugh.

Mate, do you know how expensive my skin is at this point?! 😁

The last tattoo I had cost me £460, and the artist was hugely sought after! It wasn't even a big tattoo, but the skill! It is absolutely stunning and every time I wear something sleeveless I get compliments. Still can't believe it's on my skin! I think if I added up all of mine (and they're not very many so far), it'd come to almost £3k.

"Chavvy" also amuses me. Are MNers not aware of alternative styles? Or... gasp ...goths?!

RissiOne · 28/10/2024 21:36

Yes.

Nikitaspearlearring · 28/10/2024 21:50

Yes, they'd put me off. Pete Wicks on Strictly... He's my type but not with those tatts, thanks.

pipmay · 28/10/2024 21:50

I don't like tattoos at all I'm afraid. I have studied many whilst in swimming pools and honestly never seen one I like. People go on about the artwork etc etc I just don't see it sorry.
Many are absolutely awful btw and do rather date the owner.

( I assume people want strangers looking at there skin trying to read the texts they put all over themselves???).

We are all different and like different things and that's a good thing. Personally I do. not like them so yes it does put me off.

SunsetSkylane · 28/10/2024 21:53

@pipmay I have a tattoo that's just text, but I designed it so that it's not very easily readable.

It's a massively important lyric to me, and I wanted it burned into me forever, but it is 100% just for me; if someone asks to read it I'll show them, but they can't do it without me making it possible.

That's why people with tattoos get annoyed I think: we get what we get because we love them. Period. All the other judgy stuff that comes up on here (and I don't include your post in that btw) just spectacularly misses the point.

SunsetSkylane · 28/10/2024 21:55

@GiddyRobin oh I'm sure they're vaguely aware of emo/goth types but MN in general is quite Oliver Bonas, and those godawful patterned dungarees that make you look like a toddler who is awaiting a nappy change tend to get good reviews so...

And Tattle is so renowned for being toxic and vile that there's online articles discussing it and petitions to get it banned. When do you ever see that except for about things like incel forums? 😂

It's not an insult that tattle takes the the piss out of here!!

I occasionally like a good dungaree, but they've got to have turn ups and be worn with Dr Martens, none of the baggy nappy bum either. I've seen those ones you mean and they make my eyes water. I've been a goth since I was about 15 in some form or another, and I could easily go onto some of the threads about style and be a total arsehole...but I don't. But apparently the Boden crew don't giveth as they recieve.

It's somehow "unintelligent" too. I feel like some posters must live in a bubble! Half of the people out there they're denigrating are in some of the most interesting jobs. Architects, museum directors, historians, writers, musicians. I feel like they've all seen one badly cared for pocket watch tattoo on a man's arm and decided that's it. 🤣

Oh how scandalous you are! Daring to run a company when you've marred your skin. 😱 I'm in publishing and DH is Professor DH. But naturally we just don't exist because we like gasp art on our skin! For our own eyes!
