Stories of stingiest first dates

Just comparing experiences here at a friends ... jaw dropping stuff!

Mine asked me to transfer money for a coffee and cake after our first date which was a walk and feeding the ducks.
I thought we were going for lunch ... that was the original invite.
Another asked me to transfer money to r a takeaway having offered to pay for my child and I , as he stayed at mine every weekend. Both ended there and then !

What did the frugal picnic include? 😄

I can't remember. It was over 40 years ago. Probably tap water and jam butties.

We went to Starbucks for a coffee. I was first in the queue and ordered a drink, paid and went to wait. He didn't order anything.

We sat there for a while with me and my coffee and him with nothing. He had the cheek to say 'well this is embarrassing '!!

Didn't see him again.

Did you see the recent thread where the man had got himself a coffee and not one for his date.

guess how that went

DSD9472 · 29/02/2024 17:24

Went on a luncheon date. When the bill came, he produced a large jar of coins from his man-bag. He then counted out the coins by stacking them up in piles across the table! He was very specific about me NOT touching the table or disturbing him during the 'counting process'.

Several awkward glances between me and the waitress. He collected the stacked coins up in a separate bag and handed the lump to the waitress. He paid for HIS share only BTW! 🙄

Dating is absolutely shocking these days.

quite frankly, I’d rather be single for the rest of my life with a dog than deal with some of these men. I’m not bothered about kids unless it’s with the right person anyway and I make my own money. it’s honestly not worth the hassle.

roarrfeckingroar · 29/02/2024 17:28

I expect a man to pay for the first drink and wouldn't have a second date if he didn't. End sexism against women first and maybe we'll talk.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 29/02/2024 17:29

The guy who tried to get away with paying for two children's cinema tickets for us. I was 16 and he was 24! When challenged, he said the ticket wasn't for him and made a show of looking around for the other person. I wanted the ground to swallow me up.

In the end, we walked away with no tickets and he sent me back to pay for full price ones.

BluntSeal · 29/02/2024 17:29

Some good tips here!

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 29/02/2024 17:33

Never ever had this problem.

When I was dating, I would always offer to split the bill 50/50. Most men said no but I would I insist on 50/50 split if I had no intention of seeing them again.

If I was seeking them again, I would get the next one.

There's no way I would ever want a man paying for everything. We should be well past that.

samestyle · 29/02/2024 17:36

No mean first dates, they've bought a drink, I bought the second, easy but one guy a dated must of been 2nd or 3rd date, we arranged to eat out at a beefeater type restaurant nothing fancy but when we got there he said he wasn't hungry... so we didn't eat, I think he just didn't want to pay, even for himself, another time he complained how expensive a £5 bottle of wine was.
I think splitting a meal seems stingy it's not something I would do not even with a friend, I'd pay one time and they would the next.

Terfosaurus · 29/02/2024 17:37

Met a guy for a first date. He turned up with greasy, unwashed hair. His t-shirt was stained and had holes in. He offered to go to the bar while I found a table.
When he came and sat down He told me the exact amount I owed him for the drink and held his hand out. I'm happy to go dutch, but this was literally half a pint of coke, and the way he did it was so rude.

Then the waitress brought his meal out. He hadn't told me he was eating, he hadn't offered to buy me a meal or even given me the chance to order my own. He just sat there and scoffed his meal. With his mouth open.

Needless to say I didn't see him again! Although he did message me a few times to say it was the best date he'd ever had, and could we meet again!

I can understand a woman not expecting a man to pay for everything on a first date, but there is something very unattractive about a man who wants to split a bill for two coffees/wine.

ohdamnitjanet · 29/02/2024 17:40

Britpop123 · 29/02/2024 15:47

probably the woman who expected me to pay and had no intention of splitting, just because I’m a man…

I’m with you on this.

PegasusReturns · 29/02/2024 17:40

Splitting a bill for two coffees/wines would be deeply unattractive.

EricaJohns · 29/02/2024 17:40

Jennyjojo5 · 29/02/2024 17:12

Your mum is absolutely right. And considering that most women in relationships work full or part time, do the majority of childcare and housework and emotional labour, it’s absolutely right that a man should pay for a date right upfront at the beginning 😀

Interesting stance.

Because long term relationships often end up unfair, men should pay for women at the beginning.

Maybe if people insisted on fairness, fewer relationships would end up unfair in the end.. mine have always been fair, or they'd end, but I wouldn't want to rely on personal anecdotes to try and prove a point.

You didn’t ask him what he wanted? Just ordered and sat down?

Pinkbonbon · 29/02/2024 17:42

He spoke the whole date about how he earned so much from his job. And how he liked to buy expensive clothes. I was only working part time at the time, which he knew, so it seemed extra vulger. Then when the bill came he goes 'we're splitting, right?'. THEN he goes 'the tip is included right?'.

The waitress just looked at me like 'you poor thing'.

He even thought there wpuld ve another date! And had the cheek to be shocked when I told him we weren't suited.

Alwaysalwayscold · 29/02/2024 17:43

Threads like this fascinate me. I come from a culture where it's absolutely unheard of for women to pay so it's funny to hear about such stingy dates.

Arrivederla · 29/02/2024 17:47

Honestly, I agree that no one wants to go out with someone tight with money, but why shouldn't we - as women - pay for ourselves on a first date? Imagine how expensive it gets for a man who goes on a lot of first dates if they have to always pay for everything?

As a matter of self-respect, I always offered (and preferred) to pay my share when I was dating; some men appreciated it, some didn't like it and one got really angry!! Didn't matter though, I did it for me not them.

If we expect equality then we have to behave as equals.

ScabbyHorse · 29/02/2024 17:47

Was supposed to meet at a pub and have bao buns and drinks but he changed the location at the last minute to sit on the beach instead and just wanted to smoke weed (I don't smoke it, hate it!).

vincettenoir · 29/02/2024 17:50

A guy who took me to a steak restaurant but said he was full after the starter and wanted to leave.

So it's fine to belittle men who are tight but not women?

Chitterlina · 29/02/2024 17:54

Moonlightandroses44 · 29/02/2024 16:31

sorry but if a guy can’t even buy you a glass of wine, that is exceptionally stingy.

it speaks to what they value and their generosity IMO. I would find this insulting.

And what speaks to yours?
