The Rules:

1.The first rule about the dating thread is don't talk about it with people you're dating.

  1. Develop a thick skin.
  2. Do not invest emotionally too soon.
  3. It's all BS until it actually happens.
  4. Trust your gut instinct.
  5. People vanishing, lying & being generally weird is not your fault.
  6. Know your worth.
  7. If it's not fun, stop.
  8. Loo update is mandatory.
10. No dating the thread. 11. Treat others as you'd like to be treated 12. Any relationship you have that could get ruined by having a conversation about your feelings, standards and/or expectations wasn't really stable enough to begin with 13. The things you choose to ignore/ tolerate now are the reasons you will break up in the future 14. OLD can get very time consuming. Keep doing other activities you enjoy.

Optional: Please give your irons (potential dates you are talking to) nicknames like Mr Scottish. Initials are allowed (Mr S) when you are an item

I agree re profiles. If there’s nothing to go on, I pass them by
And the worst is when they put ‘fill this in later’ - I just think if you can’t take a few minutes to write something, it shows very low effort. The profile can always be updated later on. I’ve changed my words a few times.

I've also learnt a bit from women who have well written profiles. Updated my own on occasion - not to lie - but to give a better view of me.

I make sure that my enjoyments in life - watching sport, art galleries, theatre, concerts, reading, travel are well to the fore.

Anyone expecting a gardener or DIY expert will be disappointed but at least they will know😀

Slothmomma · 04/11/2023 09:51

I agree about the low effort bios - always makes me think if they can't even be bothered to write a few words then how much effort will they put into dating.

Not having much success on apps. Spent last night chatting with 2 new irons and they just unmatched mid conversation - one asked how I was finding the app and I said they're all the same and a means to an end hopefully and then puff and the other after telling him my hobbies 🤷‍♀️

Had a new one this morning who I've just unmatched mid conversation as he commented - about my having 3 kids close in age - that I "should have kept my legs closed" - I replied that it was a bit rich judging me when he'd got someone pregnant 3 times before he was even 23! Waiting for him to have read it and the typing dots to come up and then unmatched. Charmer

Sounds like you've attracted some real charmers.

Personally I would be ashamed to write this sort of thing.

Perhaps we should have a dating site on here

Slothmomma · 04/11/2023 10:01

I wouldn't mind @ManAboutTown but 2 of mine are close in age because they're twins! I just don't get what would make someone think it was acceptable to write that to someone especially someone you've matched with because you liked the look of them

Exactly.

Tbh at my age I wouldn't message someone because I liked the look of them - need a bit of cultural connection

Slothmomma · 04/11/2023 10:14

Well I have got a filled on profile on hinge too so not just pics 😄

Loopylooni · 04/11/2023 10:52

@ManAboutTown my profile is a bit jokey but I actually quite like (easy Sudoko) and maths games but I was embarrassed to put that down in case it sounded boring!

I have such an eclectic set of likes I'm actually interested to see who responds - I'm a Chelsea season ticket holder, like Renaissance Art (and Rembrandt, Monet and Caravaggio for that matter), Shakespeare, punk and indie rock, ancient Rome and Egypt.

Oh and I can do the Times crossword as well

SamW98 · 04/11/2023 11:34

@Slothmomma

What a charmer - NOT

The one I was chatting to this week made a comment that me being blonde and from Essex that there must be tumbleweed in my head and he’ll have to speak slowly then said he was joking and I haven’t got a SOH.
What do these idiots honestly think they’ll get as a response to that?

I get judged a lot because I’m into house music. Been told to grow up, called oldest swinger in town etc like my music taste is all there is they comment on. I always say there’s a lot more about me if you take time to chat

LuckyLinda3 · 04/11/2023 11:53

Hi all. Interesting reading @ManAboutTown and @Slothmomma's comments about responses. For me personally I didn't just swipe based on looks. I think because so many responses are flat and boring that when a man actually took the time to string a proper sentence together it immediately upped my interest.
After that a good flow and a bit of humour would keep it going. Definitely agree with your comment about not saying certain things @ManAboutTown. Stay classy, my kind of people can have a laugh without offending or being crude. I find old school manners a huge turn on.
I'm not sure if men have the same experience online. I've been quite lucky really but as I say, manners, humour and good communication is definitely a winning combination for me in the early days. I'm very open minded, not easily offended so definitely not boring but for the initial exchanges I'm drawn to those traits....the fun can come later.

I agree. Tbh there's quite a few on this thread who I'd do a date with just because they like the tings I like and are intelligent and sensible

LittleFloatingGhost · 04/11/2023 12:38

Afternoon, I had date 4 with Mr Beer last night (remembered his name! 😂). It was going so well, but I was very drunk and vomited. I was covered from the knees down. 😂😂😂😂

LittleFloatingGhost · 04/11/2023 12:39

Dying today and mortified. 🙈

Mapleunicorn · 04/11/2023 12:45

Oh @LittleFloatingGhost 😂😂

have you spoken to him this morning?

SamW98 · 04/11/2023 12:49

@LittleFloatingGhost

Oh poor you. Hope you’re not hanging today

I got drunk on a date many years ago and fell asleep in the ladies loo 🤣🤣

Would you say that if a bloke had done it?

LittleFloatingGhost · 04/11/2023 13:04

@SamW98 Oh yes. It’s horrible! Lol.

@Mapleunicorn Yes, we have been messaging.

Hopefully there’s a next dates , but not sure what I’d do to top that!!😂

LuckyLinda3 · 04/11/2023 13:57

@LittleFloatingGhost poor you, did he look after you?

LittleFloatingGhost · 04/11/2023 20:02

@LuckyLinda3 not much he could do. I legged to the loo and cleaned up before he walked me to get a taxi. He is a nice guy and super lovely.

RadiantRainbow · 04/11/2023 22:47

@SamW98 and others about the selfies, I use "one time show" function on whatsapp if it is someone new or I am reluctant for them to keep that picture of me forever, it cannot be saved or screenshotted(not easily), but it does show that you are real etc. You could also send and delete it from your end within a day if you wanted to(would work if they didn't save/forward it elsewhere)

LuckyLinda3 · 04/11/2023 23:25

Aw @LittleFloatingGhost glad to hear that.

SamW98 · 05/11/2023 20:04

Well I did Bumble speed dating today. Guess who was my first chat 🤣🤣

Matched with a couple but neither were suitable once I saw their profiles.

LittleFloatingGhost · 05/11/2023 21:02

That's your destiny calling 🤣🤣

SamW98 · 07/11/2023 22:10

Well this is a curve ball - one of my best friends has always told me about her mate who asks her about me quite a lot after seeing me in her FB photos.
I’ve never actually met him but as he’s got mutuals, I’ve seen him pop up on social media every now and again.

Well he’s just come up on Bumble and so I thought ‘why not?’ And swiped - and we’ve matched!!

So I’m now sitting here thinking how do I approach the opening message knowing we’re very aware of who each other is and have connections.

Any suggestions? I was thinking maybe a light hearted ‘So it about time you took me for a drink’ - something on those lines but I’m actually surprisingly nervous on how to play this
