The Rules:

1.The first rule about the dating thread is don't talk about it with people you're dating.

  1. Develop a thick skin.
  2. Do not invest emotionally too soon.
  3. It's all BS until it actually happens.
  4. Trust your gut instinct.
  5. People vanishing, lying & being generally weird is not your fault.
  6. Know your worth.
  7. If it's not fun, stop.
  8. Loo update is mandatory.
10. No dating the thread. 11. Treat others as you'd like to be treated 12. Any relationship you have that could get ruined by having a conversation about your feelings, standards and/or expectations wasn't really stable enough to begin with 13. The things you choose to ignore/ tolerate now are the reasons you will break up in the future 14. OLD can get very time consuming. Keep doing other activities you enjoy.

Optional: Please give your irons (potential dates you are talking to) nicknames like Mr Scottish. Initials are allowed (Mr S) when you are an item

Try being a man over 50, no one in my age category is interested in me

I remember talking to a woman who was 52 ( I was 51 at the time), she said I was too old and she as looking for men under 50 ( her choice of course), but men under 50 will be over 50 at some point 🤷‍♂️

I don't get people's obssession with age. Especially when they're quibbling about a year or two

But as you can see both myself and SamW98 are meeting men in their 50s and it's not going well.

For me they are either sex obsessed, have no interests/hobbies or very, very weird.
Not saying you fit into those categories and until recently you were dating someone. But you'd have to stand out among a sea of unsmiling, uninteresting men for me to consider swiping right.

A male friend, age 50, says his success is because he's "so gobby". He has the gift of the gab and will talk about anything with anyone. He met the love of life earlier this year but has never been short of matches or dates.

trust me, I would not stand out ! , the teacher said she was looking for someone “fun and exciting “, right before she dumped me 😂

Slothmomma · 19/10/2023 16:59

I think I've come to the realisation I'm unlikely to find my "one" on OLD and am probably only continuing at this stage for something to do occasionally. Men just don't seem to be of the same mindset and even if they've had a good date they still seem to think they "can do better" and move on to next

Edited

So why don't you stand out?
I don't mean having wacky photos or a profile written by a comedian.

If a man is smiling, even better laughing, in their profile, I'll look further. If they have a photo of them doing something (preferably sporty, but that's me). If they've taken the time to write an interesting bio.

If I manage to match then the chat has to flow. How are you? How was your day? Ok, but a bit dull. I like asking random questions. Lol is almost guaranteed an unmatch.

@NellyTheCake i have a friend like this - not particularly attractive anymore now older but has a real gift of the gab so always has a partner. However is still never calling himself as attached and always on the lookout for better.

l upped my upper limit based on the chat - don’t really want to go beyond 50 as I’m 38.

Thought you’d appreciate this diamond…

Man, 50, on his profile: “Dating me is like… I’ll buy you drinks, dinner and try and get you of your clothes… how difficult is that…”

Must be knocking his door down!

NellyTheCake · 19/10/2023 20:06

LittleFloatingGhost Wow! His mother must be so proud of him 🙄

So when’s your date? 🤣🤣

SamW98 · 19/10/2023 20:12

Just did a bit of Bumble speed dating. Didn’t get Steve from Kent this time but no matches 🤷‍♀️

NellyTheCake · 19/10/2023 20:13

Just done bumble speed dating. There were actually local men on there who I'd not seen before. No idea why bumble hadn't suggested them.

I went with the random question approach. Some liked it, some could only manage lol. One asked my age, so I asked him to guess if I was older or younger. He guessed incorrectly but we have matched and so far he seems ok. He's 49.

I have another match who was quite funny on the chat. But his photos make him look like a crazy axe murderer!

NervesOfCotton · 19/10/2023 20:16

Speed dating was a bit crap for me too... Well, I thought it was good, I matched 10 of them, was feeling chuffed with myself! but only 3 matched back, one I'd spoken to before, no good, one smokes & the other one hasn't come back to chat yet so here's hoping!

There were 2 that were after sex so all-in-all it wasn't bad.

Why upto 50? Do you think 38 year old men do that?

NellyTheCake · 19/10/2023 20:22

@SamW98 @NervesOfCotton that's disappointing. It seems very random who you get to chat to. I had quite a few that were in London, so they were no good.

Axe murderer man seems to have lost his funny side. Probably because I'm not prompting him with random questions.

NervesOfCotton · 19/10/2023 20:35

NellyTheCake Sorry about axe murderer guyGrin

Mine were all nearby which was good, one just down the road!

LittleFloatingGhost · 19/10/2023 20:50

@NellyTheCake 😂

@SamW98 I feel all dreamy just thinking about him! 😜😂

@Disturbia81 My limit was 38-48, so not much difference. I am finding a lot of men in their 40’s want children, I don’t. Younger men worry me that they may want kids down the line and I can’t invest time pursuing something when the writing is on the wall from the outset.

NervesOfCotton · 19/10/2023 21:05

LittleFloatingGhost You havn't come across all the men in their 50's who say that they still want kids thenGrin

LittleFloatingGhost · 19/10/2023 21:09

@NervesOfCotton Nope! I only adjusted tonight so there is still time 😂😂

Mr Beer is 48, booked dinner for next Wednesday. Definitely taking it slow this time!

NervesOfCotton · 19/10/2023 21:14

LittleFloatingGhost I had 2 dates who were 48, I like that ageGrin

Have you got any other dates lined up or are you sticking with Mr Beer?

cassiatwenty · 19/10/2023 21:15

Is Steve from Kent a Sort? Asking for a friend 🤭

SamW98 · 19/10/2023 21:19

Well I think I’ve found my man - how about this for a genuine profile

I am 61 and very fit but recently had a prostate op so want someone to play with to see if it all still works.

I mean who could resist?

LittleFloatingGhost · 19/10/2023 21:32

@SamW98 I mean he could check if things work on his own… but I guess you’ve matched with him 😜😂

@NervesOfCotton I am keeping options open! Have a date lined up with Mr Doctor and have several chats on the go.

NellyTheCake · 19/10/2023 21:52

Axe murderer man is doing that thing were he just repeats back the question I just asked.

Me: Fav holiday destination?
Him: France. You?
Me: Fav meal?
Him: Curry. You?
Me: Ever been an axe murderer?
Him: No. You?
Me: Not yet, but I think I've found my first victim

TBH, people seem I’m boring, the kind of bloke you would see wondering around B&Q on a Sunday morning looking at mowers.

A woman at work once said she thought I “must drive a Volvo “, she was quite surprised when I said I rode motorcycles

I just seem to have the whiff of dullness and ralgex

NervesOfCotton · 20/10/2023 10:12

NoDatingFor0ldMen Sounds good to me, at least B&Q is out of the house which is one-up on most of themGrin

my match from Bumble hasn't come back. Never sure weather to just delete at this point or wait it out. No harm in waiting I just don't like them to think I'm desperately waiting to speak to them!

Do you all speak to your matches straight away after speed dating? (As much as life allows!)

NellyTheCake I hope you are still alive. He didn't 'get you' through the screen did he?Grin
