What has a guy done that instantly made you lose interest?

The ones that spring to mind:

  • Thought Jordan Peterson 'had some interesting ideas.
  • Used 'female' as a noun.
  • Let me pay half. I always offered, but if you let me, there would be no second date.
  • Really poor spelling and grammar. Not the occasional mistake or lapse (we all make them), practicaly unintelligible messages.
  • Said he 'wasn't a reader'
  • Was a picky eater.
  • Was teetotal.
  • Was religious.
  • Wore a chain.
  • Didn't drink water.

The dating pool has pee in it and, on top of that, I'm fairly unreasonable. I'm very happy I met my husband. 🤣

@concernedalot Paying is typically contraversial, tough for us blokes. No problem paying at all, but the prevailing trend when I was on OLD, was going half which makes sense when It's a first date, women really prefered to go halfers. It made sense, because I didn't want them to think that they owed me anything. Seems to be a generational thing.

I really hate the expectation men have to pay for everything on a first date. It’s grossly unfair, unless he massively out earns or there are extenuating personal circumstances. If I couldn’t afford half of even a cheap simple date I just wouldn’t go. And I’d go to Spoons quite happily!

Been in a relationship for a long while now, but mine were:

  • Expects to pay, won't go halves if asked (screams misogyny)
  • Doesn't like animals (pyscho? Clean freak? In any case my animals would be a problem)
  • Doesn't read (thick, unimaginative or both)
  • Only likes pretentious books/TV/movies not pop culture (doesn't like fun)
  • Drowned in aftershave 🤢
  • Very religious
  • Advocates homeopathy or other pseudoscience (thick)

Otherwise I was quite easy going. 😆

Out of interest, why does a man paying for a date scream ‘misogyny’?

OrchardBlack · 16/01/2024 21:56

Referred to Birmingham as 'Brum Brum'

IsThePopeCatholic · 16/01/2024 21:56

@Privatelyliving Agreed! I’d be put off if a bloke insisted on paying for me.

I don't mind offering to pay - this is fairly standard. I dislike refusing to go halves, if I say I prefer it.
I expect my words to be take at face value, and I dislike the man pays tradition.
But I haven't been on a date in some years and it would seem I'm in the minority. Oh well...

PeterWetherspoons · 16/01/2024 22:46

I'm staggered that being teetotal would be a deal-breaker for women lol..

I have so many anecdotes of men with alcohol issues.

I get if it’s personal preference even if I’d never do that, but I don’t think it screams misogyny. If a man offers to pay maybe that should be taken at face value too. Maybe he just wants to be generous and treat you.

margotmargeaux · 16/01/2024 22:54

Asked for a glass of milk and a cookie before bed.
We were in our late twenties btw.

For me, it is too steeped tradition to be considered just a gift. And that tradition is not based on equality.
If I offered to pay for the guy, would he accept?

By all means, buy me a nice thoughtful gift a few dates in, when he knows me well enough to get it right. 🙂

OliveToboogie · 16/01/2024 23:07

I am alcoholic in recovery. I have been sober for 4, years. I would never have a drink on a date doesn't make me boring .

SamW98 · 16/01/2024 23:09

My friends partner has been sober for 12 years - he’s one of the least boring men I know.

SmugglersHaunt · 16/01/2024 23:22

Got me in a headlock on his bed and whispered in my ear: “I could kill your now and no one knows where you are” - I think it was supposed to be a joke. Ha ha, I don’t think.

Dustydoilies · 16/01/2024 23:29

Had pet guinea pigs.

unexplainable but couldn’t get past it

When should he stop paying for you? Are you not a feminist?

Quite thoroughly explored this three months ago. RTFT.

Oooh, this was a fun thread! Wasn’t expecting it to be revived, but have no objections.

I didn’t date men with alcohol issues, either. It was fairly straightforward.

I don’t think anyone has said that people who don’t drink are boring.

Deal breakers

Making a fuss about paying. If I say I’d like to split it that’s because I would.

A gaming habit. Or any other very time consuming hobby.

Insolvency

A poor relationship with an ex with whom he has children

Very bad table manners

A lack of interest in the world / lack of basic general knowledge / poor conversation skills

No interest in any cultural life

An active interest in conspiracy theories

Very Religious

No ability to make me laugh

No interest in travel

Not deal breakers but he’d really have to be something:

Non drinker

Total non cook

Mildly or Moderately religious

JurassicParkaha · 17/01/2024 02:22

Teetotal and vegan - one of my greatest pleasures in life is a beautifully cooked piece of meat or fish and sharing a bottle of wine with my partner. Religion, body odour, that weird negging thing some men do, and bad kissing.

daysoff · 17/01/2024 04:43

Funny thread! The people who derailed it — you shouldn’t do that. It ruins things and is so annoying.
Mine:

  • Has lots of female friends texting him all day
  • Mum buys his pants/ does washing
  • Negging
  • Has to be centre of attention, me me me attitude
  • Talks about what a ‘nice guy’ he is
  • Disney dad
SamW98 · 17/01/2024 07:18

My list is

  • tries too hard to impress from start
  • no social life/few friends
  • big drinker
  • drugs
  • slags off exes
  • wears shorts other than on holiday
  • crap tattoos
  • tells you what a great bloke he is
  • supports Spurs
SmugglersHaunt · 17/01/2024 08:42

This happened to a friend when we were teenagers - she met a posh public schoolboy (called Jasper) and ended up in bed with him.

Halfway through he inexplicably shouted “open your legs a bit wider sweetheart” in a Frank Butcher cockney accent. She found it so disturbing that for years she couldn’t say the words when telling the story - she could only write them on a bit of paper.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 17/01/2024 09:27

A grown adult referring to his parents as mummy and daddy is very off putting and weird 😂
