Dating a guy with an awful first name (light-hearted)

To be clear - this is a lighthearted thread - I know he can't help his name and I'm obviously going to carry on seeing this guy - we met on a dating app and I knew his name before matching with him.. but it's a very unsexy name.. really not a fan of it. Can't figure out a nickname that works either (he's told me a nickname his friends use too and I'm not a fan of that either) - although to be clear he has no idea I have any qualms with his name of course!

So for anyone else who's ever done this - I assume you just get used to the name after a while and it stops being so strange!?... Um.. right...!?

Yes! Eugene/Gene is just plain ugly!

You can always call him by his initials, we call a friend with a hard to prounounce first name, SJ, and thats how he is known, as long as his surname doesnt begin with J you are fine :)

I'd probably try making calling him 'B' a thing 🤣
Failing that you'd have to adopt the 'babe' nickname at every given oppurtunity

I fancied an Arthur at college but couldnt date him because of the name, this was in the 80s when I was 16 and all I could think about was Kind Arthur and his round table

I agree pronunciation is a thing... Can REALLY change a name.

A woman I knew some years ago, was born in the late 1970s (I knew her in the late 1990s when she was 21,) and her name was Deidre. (As in Barlow from Coronation Street obvs.) She loathed it and told everyone to call her Dee.

An American man started with the company, and called her Dee-dra. She LOVED the way he said it, and insisted everyone called her Dee-dra after that! (Lasted about a month and people went back to Dee again!)

Of all the strong candidates on this thread, Cletus has to be my winner. Instantly makes me think of Cletus and Brandine from The Simpsons ("We's all kindsa things!") - but there was once a pope named Cletus! Never a Pope Barry, though.
