Dating a guy with an awful first name (light-hearted)

whatsinanameanywayright · 03/07/2023 14:13

To be clear - this is a lighthearted thread - I know he can't help his name and I'm obviously going to carry on seeing this guy - we met on a dating app and I knew his name before matching with him.. but it's a very unsexy name.. really not a fan of it. Can't figure out a nickname that works either (he's told me a nickname his friends use too and I'm not a fan of that either) - although to be clear he has no idea I have any qualms with his name of course!

So for anyone else who's ever done this - I assume you just get used to the name after a while and it stops being so strange!?... Um.. right...!?

Feel free to guess his name/give me your worst names for a guy and if it would ever stop you from dating him?

Or Brian?
Norbert?

Anskl · 03/07/2023 14:59

A friend of mine had a partner named Wayne. I thought that was bad enough but they've now split and she's dating a Duane.😳

pleasestopmessagingme · 03/07/2023 15:00

Norris is horrible.

Rainbowshine · 03/07/2023 15:01

Oh I thought it would be Randy! I’m not a fan of American sounding names myself and in a very immature way I can’t help but giggle at Randy as a name. It is curious how some names can seem dated - we had lots of Gary’s Keith’s and Wayne’s at school

MileEndMaisie · 03/07/2023 15:03

Barry is one of those names, like Kevin, that you can completely transform in your head by thinking about Irish saints (rather than Barry from Eastenders and Kevin the teenager).

WetBandits · 03/07/2023 15:03

Barry was the first name that popped into my head when I opened the thread!

Although he suggested Baz for short so perhaps it’s all a big coverup and his name is actually…Balonz 😱

I once declined a date with a lovely fella called Roland.
Went out with someone called Bent and dreaded introducing him or calling him by name.
In fairness he was Danish, but still.

OngoingConfidence · 03/07/2023 15:03

my guesses are Keith or Seth

Sorry, didn't see your update

I did have amazing sex with a guy called Colin once, although “he’s Colin Frissell and he’s got a big knoooooobbb” crossed my mind at least twice whilst DTD 😁😁

Surname wasn’t Frissell but he did have a big knob

TwigTheWonderKid · 03/07/2023 15:05

It's interesting how Harry is not in the same category as Barry.

pleasestopmessagingme · 03/07/2023 15:05

Ralph is a name I've always hated. It reminds me of someone being sick or puke on the floor. I don't know why 🤷🏻‍♀️

Outdamnspot23 · 03/07/2023 15:06

I know someone who hates her H's name and avoids using it or any nickname at all, it's always "him" or "you".

My first thought was Nigel, Colin would be difficult too. And Derek. Could just about cope with most others.

Ralph just reminds me of Ralph Wiggum from the Simpsons 😆

Iamclearlyamug · 03/07/2023 15:07

Colin
Nigel
Wayne

Surely has to be one of those. I don't know any colins but my exH was a nigel and I knew a Wayne previously and he was also a prick as a PP mentioned the one she knew was 🤣🤷‍♀️

RomeoMcFlourish · 03/07/2023 15:08

I thought it was going to be Bernard or Boris. Barry isn’t great, but not as bad as Bernard or Boris.

Outdamnspot23 · 03/07/2023 15:09

O h Barry! well.

I used to be at school with one and called him Barold, not sure that's much help.

Seconding the suggestion of eventually using "babe" 😂

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 03/07/2023 15:09

@RomeoMcFlourish beat me to it. I'd struggle massively with a Bernard.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/07/2023 15:09

My best friend has the same name as the first cabbage patch kid 🤪I ever had. (And still have) always found that a bit tricky. 🤣🤣 (Doll predated friend)

SootysCaravan · 03/07/2023 15:10

Howling at this.

There is no other option but to call him ‘B’ from now on

Whichwhatnow · 03/07/2023 15:10

Not anyone I've dated but my dad is a Nigel (poor bloke) and has gone by a completely unrelated nickname since secondary school. I think the only person I've ever heard call him Nigel (well, actually 'Ni') is one of his sisters (the other siblings use the nickname). Could that be an option if the surname suggestion doesn't work out? I agree I would cringe just a bit every time I introduced him to a friend or whatever 😅.

Polecat07 · 03/07/2023 15:10

I had no idea Wayne was regarded as such an awful name.

I dated a Wayne in my youth and never thought twice about it??

Then again there are another two names listed numerous times on this thread that I dated too and never felt they were awful names....

I dislike Kevin as well so I can't be that abnormal.

RobinStrike · 03/07/2023 15:12

Does he have a middle name?

Onthelow · 03/07/2023 15:14

Barry is not as bad as some of the others!

Prestat · 03/07/2023 15:14

I knew a very attractive Nigel
