Dating a guy with an awful first name (light-hearted)

whatsinanameanywayright · 03/07/2023 14:13

To be clear - this is a lighthearted thread - I know he can't help his name and I'm obviously going to carry on seeing this guy - we met on a dating app and I knew his name before matching with him.. but it's a very unsexy name.. really not a fan of it. Can't figure out a nickname that works either (he's told me a nickname his friends use too and I'm not a fan of that either) - although to be clear he has no idea I have any qualms with his name of course!

So for anyone else who's ever done this - I assume you just get used to the name after a while and it stops being so strange!?... Um.. right...!?

Feel free to guess his name/give me your worst names for a guy and if it would ever stop you from dating him?

I'm mid 50's and grew up with people with truly awful names. Not the uncommon names, but the common popular ones.

Keith
Roy
Barry
Wayne
Duane/Dwayne

Don't actually mind Nigel or Kev.

Don't like the current trend of names ending in 'don' either, such as Braydon, Jaydon etc. Puts my teeth on edge.

feelingfree17 · 09/07/2023 22:06

Got to be a Nigel

bellamountain · 09/07/2023 22:41

This thread should make you feel better OP because there are evidently more uncool names than cool (the cool list must be very very small). So Barry is in good company!

whatsinanameanywayright · 10/07/2023 13:46

Wow this thread has really taken off 😂 It's only been a couple of dates but I'm getting used to the name already a bit ha! And he seems really lovely so fingers crossed it goes well. I guess the more you think about/ use the name (admittedly more with other people than with him!) it does start getting less strange.

Sadly there's no middle name and the last name isn't great either ha (rhymes with a swear word...) but I'll learn to live with it if he carries on impressing me 😂

What’s the first initial if his surname? Could you use his initials? Like, ‘Bee Tee’ if his surname is Thompson, for example.

W0tnow · 10/07/2023 14:05

Maybe not if it’s Smith…..

ReadingSoManyThreads · 10/07/2023 15:52

Barry Hunt

SwedishEdith · 10/07/2023 16:42

Barry Buck
Barry Took 😊

BookHereNoFee · 10/07/2023 20:24

I've been saying dating a Barry for best part of a year and I'll be honest it hasn't got any easier!

W0tnow · 10/07/2023 20:54

i mean, I wouldn’t name my kid Barry, but I don’t HATE it.

Wayne, on the other hand….

I’m finding this thread bordering on abuse. It’s all well to call it light hearted and poke it for fun but as a child I was bullied due to my name, Radio 1 had a day dedicated to the name to the the piss and now in later life I see reference to it here. it’s not a protected characteristic but you should be ashamed if you are instigating or commenting on this bullying nature of a post.

luckily I changed my name 20 years ago but discussions like this make me shudder and realise that there is a bully in everyone.

Well, you’ve come given the mean ladies a very stern telling off. I’m glad you’ve got it out of your system.
Now off you pop and let people have a bit of light hearted fun.
Perhaps, in future, don’t open threads that are clearly titled “Dating a guy with an awful first name (light-hearted)”
and then you can avoid upset xxx

Norman is worse.

Barry's alright, there's enough there to work with 😂

@Maninwhite, was your name Nigel? I know there’s an annual meet up of Nigel’s and Radio 1 did a segment on it. I know a Nigel and he really suits his name.

I have a mock-worthy surname which is also the surname of someone famous but a bit naff so I’ve had the piss taken out of me on two fronts my whole life. My surname also sort of rhymes with my first name which set me up nicely for pisstaking on the third front. It used to really bother me as a kid but I care less now I’m an adult as I’ve got better at laughing at myself.

I’m sorry you still feel triggered due to the bullying you’ve experienced. Nobody is being serious on this thread and I dare say most of us would still date a good guy with a name we’re not keen on. We know it’s no reflection on the person themselves. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

On the right guy Norman could be geeky cool. In a Jarvis Cocker kinda way.

Barry is just a greasy haired bloke in an anorak.

Surely someone shouldn’t have to “laugh at themselves” because of something so intrinsic to their identity?

Well, no, but it helps to accept it. What’s the alternative? Get defensive and bitter that I was lumbered with a shit name? That would just encourage them ime. My surname represents my cultural and ethnic identity and heritage so I’m glad I didn’t change it like I wanted to when younger. Doesn’t change the fact that it translates humorously in English and there’s not a lot I can do about that except laugh along. It’s not the most important thing about me anyway. I dare say you’ve laughed along with a joke or poked fun about something you didn’t realise was a sore spot for someone else. That’s just life and part of being human.

PimpMyFridge · 11/07/2023 10:35

@JellybabyToes 👌a refreshing attitude of give and take.

Maninwhite · 11/07/2023 10:47

I guess. Karen’s are a good example of someone who gets a lot of stick.

Gatekeeperoffood · 11/07/2023 18:13

I'm surprised no one has said Leslie yet

smartiestubes · 11/07/2023 18:45

Lloyd 😂 I was with a Lloyd from the ages 20-22. Always had comments from people about the name. Didn’t suit a young “lad” at all. Oh and… Such an un-shoutable name in bed 🤦🏼‍♀️

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 11/07/2023 18:53

That name just instantly makes me think of these two chaps - entertaining in a nostalgic way, but hardly what you'd call contemporary now!
