Dating a guy with an awful first name (light-hearted)

whatsinanameanywayright · 03/07/2023 14:13

To be clear - this is a lighthearted thread - I know he can't help his name and I'm obviously going to carry on seeing this guy - we met on a dating app and I knew his name before matching with him.. but it's a very unsexy name.. really not a fan of it. Can't figure out a nickname that works either (he's told me a nickname his friends use too and I'm not a fan of that either) - although to be clear he has no idea I have any qualms with his name of course!

So for anyone else who's ever done this - I assume you just get used to the name after a while and it stops being so strange!?... Um.. right...!?

Feel free to guess his name/give me your worst names for a guy and if it would ever stop you from dating him?

I think Ralph is a bad one!

Or ROLF! Shock

nosepierce · 03/07/2023 15:36

Aw Barry - i just knew it would be something like that.

I don't hate it but there is something about it and the names below I don't like. Barry is not the worst.

I also don't like:
Gary
Kevin
Nigel
Jason - Jay is absolutely ok though!
Derek
Adrian

TrundleWheel76 · 03/07/2023 15:37

I went out with a Gérard and a Clark. Neither lasted long, at least partly due to their terrible names.

My OH has a sensible, normal name. 😆

Redlarge · 03/07/2023 15:39

Wayne
Dwayne
Colin
Jeremy
Geofrey
Kyle
Gordon
Gregory

All off-putting names

Backstreets · 03/07/2023 15:39

Herman?

Rubycoola · 03/07/2023 15:39

I would struggle with a Nigel, Derek, Ivor, Randy, Eugene, Nobby, Bobby, Alfie, Brian and yes, Barry!

I love my husband's name, it's always been in my list of favourites. I actually think a name can make a difference to attraction but I'm probably just odd!

continentallentil · 03/07/2023 15:39

Barry is definitely better than Keith, Keef is the worst

It’s a pity Bee is a woman’s name..

MsFogi · 03/07/2023 15:39

Just call him Pumpkin

loislovesstewie · 03/07/2023 15:39

Actually I knew a Wilfred many years ago, I wouldn't go out with him as the name is so awful.

Jenasaurus · 03/07/2023 15:40

Associations that have ruined names

Gary Glitter
Rolf Harris
Kevin Spacey
Phillip Schofield
Fred West
Brian - well all I think about is the snail from the magic roundabout oh and Brian Cant, but he was OK
Boris Johnson (but a friend gave it as a nickname for their wifes bits, so its kind of yucky anyway to me)
Donald Trump

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/07/2023 15:40

Or ROLF!

With the association with blowing chunks and that vile disgraced man on the TV, I cannot imagine anybody every calling their child that for at least the next 50 years.

Rubycoola · 03/07/2023 15:40

Oh and Adolf would be a no.

A very long time ago - probably in the 1930’s my great aunt met Sid, she hated the name and so decided she would call him John 🤷‍♀️
Everyone else called him Sid, she was the only one to call him John. It wasn’t his middle name or anything, just a name she liked.

Backstreets · 03/07/2023 15:42

I like Alfie! It's cheeky. Alfie's got a shaggy haircut and a sweet disposition. Might give you an STD but be very apologetic about it

My grandma was engaged to a Canadian solider called Wilfred in the 1st world war, she didnt marry him in the end and married my grandpa, but my DF had a cuddly bunny as a child called Wilfred, I always wondered if my grandpa was OK with his son naming his teddy after his DW ex! :)

NameTrouble · 03/07/2023 15:42

With the association with blowing chunk

Isn't that Ralph?

RightOnTheEdge · 03/07/2023 15:42

I had a boyfriend called Roy when I was in my 20s. I really hated it and cringed every time I had to tell someone his name 😆

It's such an old fashioned name and just reminded me of Roy Cropper.

toffeeappleglow · 03/07/2023 15:42

DH has a name that is unusual for our generation. There's nothing wrong with the name itself, but people would typically expect someone from at least one generation older, based on the name alone. He doesn't like the typical nicknames for his name, and nor do I, for that matter.

In my case, I got used to it. But again, it wasn't a particularly strange or off-putting name, except that before I knew him, I thought of it as an of an 'old man name', and not one that has come around to be trendy again.

KittytheHare · 03/07/2023 15:42

I trawled through the entire thread because I knew at some stage DH's name would appear😀

HonorHiding · 03/07/2023 15:43

I went out with a Bernard (American pron Ber-NARD). I had to draw the line at Dickon though. It was a family name down however many generations. I thought the only thing worse than marrying a Dickon would be to have his family telling you to name your first son Dickon.

doingthehokeykokey · 03/07/2023 15:43

Call him Barrington, go posh 😂

GalileoHumpkins · 03/07/2023 15:43

Barry can be used as a diminutive of the name Bartholomew or Barrington, try calling him one of those instead.

Agapornis · 03/07/2023 15:44

Call him Bear? Bartholomew? Barrington? Finbar? Barack? Buddy? Buzz?

theDudesmummy · 03/07/2023 15:44

I don't find Barry too bad, and the first person who comes to mind for me is Barry Gibb, who will always be the epitome of cool.

My DH has a name which I love (and happily has not appeared on this thread, yet!), but there is a famous line from a very old sitcom which uses it in a mocking way, which people of a certain age will sometimes come out with them they are introduced to him, which he really doesn't like!

A bit annoying to me is that my surname and his surname (which is also DS's surname) start with the same three letters and when I start to spell one out after having already given the other one, the person usually assumes I am spelling out the same name again and doesn't listen to the rest of the letters.
