Dating a guy with an awful first name (light-hearted)

whatsinanameanywayright · 03/07/2023 14:13

To be clear - this is a lighthearted thread - I know he can't help his name and I'm obviously going to carry on seeing this guy - we met on a dating app and I knew his name before matching with him.. but it's a very unsexy name.. really not a fan of it. Can't figure out a nickname that works either (he's told me a nickname his friends use too and I'm not a fan of that either) - although to be clear he has no idea I have any qualms with his name of course!

So for anyone else who's ever done this - I assume you just get used to the name after a while and it stops being so strange!?... Um.. right...!?

Feel free to guess his name/give me your worst names for a guy and if it would ever stop you from dating him?

I dated a Bruce. Never really got to the point where I didn't cringe slightly when I said his name.

Ian

I once couldn't date a guy because he's called Graham.

Not only was it ridiculously out of date for his age, but it's also my dad's name.

It's Barry! Nickname of Baz he said.. it's funny though as he obviously knows it's not a great name as he was talking about how in relationships you rarely use their name in the first person do you (valid point!) - it's rare you'd actually say their name...

I like the suggestion of using his surname.. I don't actually know that yet though! Hopefully it'll be better - I'll ask on the next date😂

I've also got a friend whose partner is a Wayne - I remember we were both saying how awful it was and then I mentioned something like that after they'd been together a little while and she said she's got used to it now.. so hopefully it'll be the same for me if it goes anywhere!

I have a truly shit name so cannot comment, but a friend of mine has been dating a guy for about 18 months now, and still pulls a kind of 'sorry/don't laugh' face when someone asks his name and she has to say 'Nigel'

Toothiepegg · 03/07/2023 14:50

I'm guessing Wayne.

cptartapp · 03/07/2023 14:51

My DH name has been mentioned. It's actually his middle name which tells you how horrific his actual first name is. (A family name of five generations that we put a stop to!)
Even thirty years on it makes me cringe tbh.

Donald?
Adolf?
Eugene?
Dick? Willy? Johnson? Todger?

Jez Usbourne? or Mark Corrigan?

Gotta love Mrs Doyle! Her face when she got the name right was hilarious 😂

I met a Welsh Wayne on a dating app recently! Handsome and a very smooth talker, but an awful name....!

I just knew it 🤣🤣🤣

whatsinanameanywayright · 03/07/2023 14:52

Btw, I think some of these names are fine! Brian, Keith, Ian, Malcolm..

Barry, Wayne, Boris, Nigel.. these are not great. Honestly, I'd say Barry was probably one of the top "worst" male names though 🤐

My exh first AND seconds name have been mentioned repeatedly here 😂

He is not an ex purely because of this.....

GreatBigBoots · 03/07/2023 14:53

I feel for both of you. I have a very old fashioned name that is not a timeless classic or one that has become fashionable again. I have only ever met one person with my name that is any younger than my mum. Quite a few people have told me that when they met me (having been given my name beforehand) they were expecting a much older woman. I'm sure DH's colleagues have assumed (before they met me hopefully!) that he married someone at least 30 years older than him. My name is also one with no nice nicknames/shortenings and my middle name is equally badly dated. I would quite like to change it, but then I know I'd be forever referred to as 'her who used to be called Doreen*'

  • not my actually badly dated name but in the same area

It reminds me of " our Graham " with his quick reminders from Blind Date.

Algernon?

Ah yes!

I was going to suggest that it might have been Donal...dim Donal who doesn't get a lot of what's going on around him...but now I see that it is Barry, sorry Baz...the only acceptable Baz is either yer man from the Happy Mondays or of Luhrmann fame, in my opinion.

SubtleUserName · 03/07/2023 14:57

I have an Uncle Barry, he's been happily married 49 years and loves cats and biscuits. My list had far worse suggestions!
Michelle Obama seems alright with her Barry. If your Barry is a decent guy you'll be fine!
(What about your name? Are you Carrie or Cazza?)

Highlighta · 03/07/2023 14:30

It's Derrick isn't it..... 😀

I thought Derek too! But I thought a different spelling.

pleasestopmessagingme · 03/07/2023 14:59

@LookItsMeAgain it's Bez not Baz 🤣
